Let’s get beyond the Dream Dictionary.  One obstacle to understanding dreams is the assumption that there are fixed meanings for every symbol.  Some meanings may be universal, but many are also completely personal! Use a good dream dictionary  to find possible questions to ask the dreamer, but not for finished answers to a dream's meaning.

This lecture richly details some of the amazing contributions dreams have made to Science.  For example, the Periodic Table of Elements which graces the walls of hard science classrooms, came to Mendeleyev in a dream, as have many Nobel prize winning ideas!

Rapid Eye Movement-- called R.E.M. or “REM sleep”  is when a sleeper’s eyes are moving around behind closed lids as if they are watching something. Our nightly dreams are especially active and are easiest to spot by observers during REM sleep. Every dream cycle culminates in  dream-filled R.EM. sleep.

Dreams use multi-layered symbols that can reveal important unconscious issues. Or they can conceal interior knowledge to keep it away from waking attitudes, especially our own.  And keeping unconscious knowledge conscious is a challenge.

Contrary to popular opinion, dreams are a buried treasure in every human life! They are filmed live and in person inside us and they reveal objective facts about our subjective interior. But, our dreams don’t play by the same rules as waking life.   

“To make sense of a dream is to discover that the mind we use all day long and identify with is by far the most negligible part of who we are. We are, all of us, most essentially of another mind entirely. "  Dreams come from this other mind.

The International Association for the Study of Dreams formulated standards for dreamwork. You will notice that they correspond nicely to our rules and approach.

While we totally agree with this part: "The dreamer should be forewarned that unexpected issues or emotions may arise..." we also seek, explore and strive to encounter issues and emotions that are unexpected because they are unconscious and the dream seeks to correct that in order to further health and wholeness.

It is just adding the positive counterpart to the warnings which are also relevant. Dreamwork is not a game or a toy and if you feel unstable, don't explore about without professional guidance.
