With this short video, I intend to provide a summary of the course content and format.
The most relevant standards to be aware of when working with electric vehicle charging.
It's important to know the right words and terms of the components that are most mentioned in electric vehicle charging so that we have a good understand and can communicate correctly with each other.
Charging stations are often described as AC charging stations or DC charging stations. First, let's introduce what AC and DC is.
Now that we know what AC and DC is, we can describe AC and DC charging.
It's important to know which type of charging station to chose, depending on the location and use. In this lecture, we discuss which type of charging station should be placed where, and why.
It's important to understand the new measures of driving cost and being able to correlate with power and time.
It's important to correlate the measures that let us understand efficiency.
The old consumption numbers vs the new consumption numbers.
The old consumption numbers vs the new consumption numbers.
Lower charging power than expected is a common issue. With this lecture, we review the most common causes.
IEC 61851-1 defines multiple "Modes" of charging.
SAE J1772 defines multiple "Levels" of charging.
All the relevant connectors in the electric vehicle charging world.
There are several important details in the electric vehicle charging cables and connectors.
Deep dive into the Type-2 connector.
Deep dive into the Type-1 connector.
Adaptation of one region to the other.
It's important to know how to root cause issues. Here, we describe symptoms that are related to issues caused by cables and connectors.
The Control Pilot is the communication signal between charging station and electric vehicle. We explore this signal and learn how to make a circuit to simulate an electric vehicle,
How to make test equipment is valuable for some professions related to electric vehicle charging. This equipment helps to test a charging station that connects to a vehicle with Type-2 vehicle inlet.
How to make test equipment is valuable for some professions related to electric vehicle charging. This equipment helps to test a charging station that connects to a vehicle with Type-1 vehicle inlet.
Deep dive into the interaction between a public AC charging station and electric vehicle.
A home charging station can be simpler than a public charging station. Here's how.
How to make test equipment valuable for some professions related to electric vehicle charging. This equipment helps to test the interactions between charging station and electric vehicle.
How charging stations operate in the backend.
Safety first.
Summary of how this charging station operates.
A brief explanation of the resources shared to make this charging station.
Making of the charging station. The components, code for the Arduino Uno, PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and putting it all together.
Testing the newly made charging station in the bench and with two different vehicles.
Explanation of the reason for creating a version 2 of the Charging Station.
In this course, I will take you through the different methods of EV (Electric Vehicle) charging, different charging stations, the types of connectors, and the systems onboard the electric vehicles, always referring to the most relevant international standards so that you know why things are the way they are and which documentation you can read to get more in depth.
Everything in this course is explained with a practical application and the theoretical explanation so that you get a real world feeling on how things work.
I will show you how to calculate the correlations between energy, power and time so that you will be able to identify the energy consumption, range and charging time of an electric vehicle, and you will be able to perform these calculations based on battery size and charging power.
As the course progresses, it will get more technical and more in depth. I will show you how to make equipment that can be used to test a charging station, simulating an electric vehicle, so that you understand how the electric vehicle communications controller works, and I will show how to make equipment that helps to measure the interaction between charging station and electric vehicle so that I can explain with full detail the communication and power transfer between charging station and electric vehicle, always explaining with the theory and applicable standards.
During the demonstrations, I will take you through some of the common issues that can occur during starting to charge or during charging, so that you will know what to look for depending on a few symptoms and charging method.
Finally, I will show you how to make a simple AC charging station based on an Arduino Uno. I will share the circuits and code, demystifying the complexity of charging. You can use this to have a complete understanding of charging, or even as a starting point for making your own charging station.
If you find that a complete integration of practical examples and descriptions explained with theory and standards is the most valuable way to learn, then this is the course for you.
