In this introductory part of the course, we address the definition of research impact and its direct relationship with disseminating research findings. Moreover, we also discuss the array of potential benefits fostered by disseminating research findings in diverse areas (e.g., society, economy, environment, public health, etc.).
This second part is entirely dedicated to explaining that engaging in disseminating research findings can be highly beneficial to your research career. Consequently, the aim is not only to clarify this aspect but also to encourage you to explore this activity to leverage your career towards a higher level of maturity and independent thinking.
This third part comprises the core of the course (that is why it is also the longest) and is dedicated to explaining which are the stakeholders who should know about your research findings and that can also benefit from them. It also explains in great detail how to design a practical and effective dissemination plan, how to explore the most effective channels of communication to maximise your qualified visibility and, equally important, how to monitor the effectiveness of your dissemination plan.
In alignment with the scope of this course, the present Lecture brings three resources.
First, it provides an article (free access) where I address different communication strategies that researchers can implement to strengthen their profile. In complement to that, I also provide a link to a YouTube video addressing the same topic in a more illustrative manner.
Secondly, it provides a downloadable resource comprised of an innovative and unique Mind Map which you will find nowhere else, and it helps to illustrate the possibilities you can explore to disseminate your research findings as broadly as possible both in academia and beyond.
It is also relevant to explain that the aim is not trying to embrace all of them at once because, although many of them are free of charge, they take time and a lot of energy. However, it is important to have a clear picture of the available possibilities and then, develop a strategic plan to tackle as many as possible within a certain timeframe (e.g., six months, one year, and so forth).
The most important thing is that this Mind Map provides you with an overview and then you can set up your plan knowing beforehand exactly where to go and what you can explore.
Finally, this fourth part of the course is dedicated to providing you with some suggestions of alternative sources of information, in case you feel the need to learn more about disseminating research findings and wishes to expand your knowledge in this area.
Many researchers, especially those in the early stages of their careers, are not fully aware of how to make their work known to a broad audience of peers and also beyond academia. In other words, how do you disseminate your research findings? How do you reach stakeholders such as policymakers, journalists, leaders of non-governmental organisations, and opinion-makers, among many others? Which communication strategy can you adopt? How can you develop an effective and affordable dissemination plan and monitor its efficacy over time?
Well, in this course I want to share my successful experience in disseminating research findings among a wide audience and help you achieve the goal of turning your work known by people who really matter to you.
You will learn, for example, how to identify the stakeholders who should know about your research findings and that can also benefit from them, how to maximise the results of your dissemination strategy, how to design a strong dissemination plan, and how to monitor if you are achieving your communication goals, and much more.
In the current context where we are surrounded by an array of digital technology resources, there are plenty you can achieve and manage to fit your actions either on tight budgets or even for free. So, do not miss the opportunity to learn everything you can to make your work known to as many people as possible.
Foster engagement with your research results and create a real impact today.
