Description

This course teaches the bunkai of the first kata of the Isshinryu Karate system. Isshinryu is a karate style that is simple yet powerful. Due to its simplicity, it is appropriate for students of all ages and abilities that are looking to learn self defense. Prior to starting this course, it is recommended to have knowledge of how to perform the 15 basic techniques, 5 basic kicks as well as Seisan kata.  All of these prerequisites are taught in my other courses.

The first kata of Isshinryu is named Seisan.  This is the kata learned as a white belt.  Seisan teaches simple, effective striking techniques that are designed to neutralize one or more opponents. Though Seisan is the first kata learned it must continue to be refined through the years.

After learning to perform the kata it is now important to know how to apply it.  This is known as bunkai.  Each portion of the kata has its own video lesson which thoroughly demonstrates and explains step by step how to apply the movements in a self defense situation. Structure, posture, foot work, body mechanics, common misconceptions and more are addressed during the lessons.

The course is broken into 2 sections so the learner can focus on smaller segments of the bunkai at a time. Both sections will have a quiz that helps the learner reflect on the previous content. Correct and incorrect answer choices will have feedback as well as a reference to the video in which the bunkai section was taught.

Future courses will teach the remaining katas that make up Isshinryu karate as well as bunkai for each kata.
