Why is it important to isolate hazardous energy and perform LO/TO correctly.
The most common forms of hazardous energy found in industrial settings.
Electrical Energy
Mechanical Energy
Thermal Energy
Chemical Energy
Hydraulic Energy
Steam Energy
Other forms of hazardous energy such as stored or spring energy.
This section is about identifying and isolating hazardous energy.
The Authorized employee classification is covered here.
The Affected employee classification is covered here.

The LOTO removal steps are covered in this section.
The section covers what to do if an employee is not present and their LOTO devices must be removed.
Coordination with outside contractors is covered in this section.
The requirements for the periodic program inspection.
The course will cover the Control of Hazardous Energy standard found at 29 CFR 19190.147 found in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 29 1910.147. The course is designed for personnel involved in maintenance, facilities and servicing of equipment along with those supervising these operations. Countless employees have been killed or injured because they did not isolate the hazardous energy properly.
The LOTO topics covered in this module include:
State the different forms of hazardous energy
Lockout/Tagout training
Identify and isolate hazardous energy
Understand the role of the three different employee classifications
Protective hardware
Hazardous energy isolation steps - Lockout/Tagout application
Lockout/Tagout device removal steps
Outside contractor coordination
Periodic program inspection
This course contains photos from site visits showing the various forms of hazardous energy found at industrial facilities to include electrical, mechanical, thermal pneumatic, chemical (liquids and gases), hydraulic and steam. Lock, tags, hasps along with specialty LO/TO devices are covered.
Under the Control of hazardous Energy - Lockout/Tagout standard all employees all into three distinct employee classifications. The Authorized, Affected and Other employees. The Authorized employee has been authorized by the company to perform the LO/TO on the equipment. The Affected employee is the employee is affected by the maintenance or servicing of the equipment. These are typically the personnel who operate the equipment. There are times when the company has chosen to train the affected employee to also be the Authorized employee. The last category is the Other employee. The Other employee is anyone that is not the Authorized or Affected employee. Regardless of the employee, it is very important to understand LOTO and not remove LOTO devices and locks while Authorized employees are working on the equipment.
Coordination with outside contractors is covered as these employees will sometimes augment the workforce or are brought to the facility for specialized maintenance and servicing of equipment. Finally, the periodic program inspection is covered to ensure the program is running smoothly and to correct any gaps before a person is hurt. Students who complete this course will be granted 0.1 CEU. Please contact me at david.ayers@comcast.net
