In this introductory lecture, we set out an overview of the course structure and what you can expect to learn.
In this lecture, we will cover key concepts that underpin this course, such as what is "communication" and who are "middle managers". Importantly, we will also introduce the PIER communications framework (Purpose, Interests, Emotional Intelligence, and Relational Intelligence).
This lecture will deep dive into the PIER Framework - which stands for Purpose, Interests, Emotional Intelligence, and Relational Intelligence, which will provide a communication framework to deliver messages that resonate with C-Suite executives, peers, and team members, while ensuring clarity, alignment, and impact. Then, in the later lectures, we will also examine hypothetical situations to understand how you can practically apply the PIER Framework in your workplace to make you a better middle manager.
In this lecture, we will focus on how to effectively communicate with senior leaders, emphasizing the importance of aligning your message with organizational goals and strategic priorities. We will also learn the BLUF technique - which stands for Bottom Line Up Front, to craft concise and structured messages to higher management.
We will then look at a hypothetical situation of how a project manager can apply the PIER framework to present a high stakes turnaround plan to a Steering Committee of senior leaders.
This lecture will explore strategies for effective lateral communication with peers and other middle managers, which is essential for successful cross-department collaboration.
We will examine a hypothetical situation of how a product manager can obtain alignment across various departments to achieve a successful development of a new software product for her company.
This lecture will cover how to lead your team through clear, motivational, and constructive communication, focusing on building trust and fostering a positive work environment. We will look at a hypothetical situation of how a marketing manager can provide constructive feedback to an underperforming team member.
Finally, we will end off by doing a recap of the key principles and points from the course.
