CIPS L5M1 - Video Course - Managing Teams

About this course

If you've just finished CIPS Level 4, L5M1: Managing Teams and Individuals can come as a bit of a shock. It’s completely new content from what we’ve learnt at Level 4. Here we’re suddenly talking about management theory, organisational behaviour, and motivation and there’s a lot of new models, theories and scholars we’ve got to learn for the exam.

For a lot of us, it’s completely different to what we’ve done before and what we do in our day job. That's where this course comes in.

Making the theory easier to understand — and remember

Rather than simply giving you the theory, I'll explain it in clear, straightforward language and then relate it to situations you can actually picture.

We'll look at Scientific Management through the example of McDonald's. We'll explore management theories through real organisations and situations — and at one point I'll explain what my toddler throwing all his balls down the stairs can teach us about management.

Yes, really.

Some of the examples are deliberately a little ridiculous, because when you're trying to remember a huge amount of management theory for an exam, the memorable examples are the ones that stick.

From theory to real-life application

The CIPS study guide gives you the theory you need to know. My aim is to help you understand what that theory actually looks like in practice.

Throughout the course, I'll relate the syllabus to real organisations, my own experiences and everyday situations to help you make those connections.

I'll also point out the areas I think are particularly important for the exam and discuss the different ways CIPS could turn the content you're learning into exam questions.

Learn at your own pace

You'll get 6+ hours of video content covering all four Learning Outcomes.

The syllabus is broken down into manageable individual lessons, so you don't have to sit through enormous lectures. You can work through the course whenever it suits you, pause to make notes and come back to individual topics when you're revising.

You can use the course alongside the CIPS study guide or as an alternative way of learning and revising the syllabus if you find reading management theory from a textbook isn't quite doing it for you.

More than just the videos

For every Learning Outcome, you'll also get a Resource Pack containing additional reading and videos to help you explore the topics further.

There are also 76 practice questions throughout the course. I don't provide model answers to these — they're designed to make you go back through what you've learned, practise retrieving the information and think about how you would approach the topic in an exam.

Who's teaching you?

I'm an ex-teacher, I'm MCIPS qualified and I work in procurement.

That means I'm not simply reading the content of the study guide back to you. I've studied for the CIPS exams myself, I understand what it's like trying to remember all of these theories, and I can relate what you're learning to situations I've encountered in the real world.

I also answer student questions personally through the course Q&A.

My aim is to make L5M1 feel less daunting, put the theory in context and, most importantly, help you remember and apply what you've learned when you get into the exam.
