L4M8: Procurement and Supply in Practice is a little different from the other modules you've studied at CIPS Level 4.

It's the summary module – which means it brings together a lot of the knowledge you've covered throughout Level 4 and asks you to apply it in practical procurement situations.

That also means there's a lot to remember.

Procurement processes, pre-contract and post-contract stages, performance indicators, whole-life asset management, ESG... by the time you reach L4M8, you've accumulated quite a lot of procurement theory.

That's where this course comes in.

Rather than simply working through another PowerPoint full of definitions, I'll explain the content in clear, straightforward language and, importantly, relate it to situations you can actually picture.

Procurement theory – with actual procurement

I'm a teacher, MCIPS qualified and my day job is helping different organisations run procurement tenders. Throughout the course I'll relate the theory to things I've actually experienced in my career.

For example, we'll work through the CIPS Procurement Cycle using the first proper procurement project I ever worked on: buying a wheelchair ramp.

I promise it's more exciting than it sounds.

We'll use that procurement to see how the different stages of the cycle work in reality, rather than trying to memorise a diagram and hoping for the best.

Throughout the rest of the course, I'll use practical examples in the same way to help make some of the more theoretical parts of L4M8 easier to understand – and, hopefully, easier to remember when you're sitting your exam.

Understand it, remember it, apply it

The examples aren't just there to make the videos more interesting.

L4M8 is about applying procurement knowledge in a workplace context, so being able to explain a theory and then demonstrate how it could work in practice is an important skill to develop.

I'll help you think about the kinds of examples you could use in your own exam answers to demonstrate that you haven't simply memorised the textbook – you actually understand what the theory means.

And if something in the study guide needs a little more context, I'll tell you. For example, I'll highlight where information relating to UK public-sector procurement legislation has moved on since the study materials were written, so you're aware of the current position as well as what the book says.

You'll get over 3.5 hours of video content, covering all four Learning Outcomes.

The course is completely on demand, so you can work through it whenever it suits you, pause when you need to make notes and return to individual topics when you're revising.

You can use the course alongside your CIPS study guide as another way of learning the content, particularly if you like switching it up between reading, listening and watching.

Each Learning Outcome also comes with a Resource Pack, containing additional reading and videos to help you explore the topics further and build up more examples you could use in your exam.

And throughout the course you'll have 73 practice questions to test whether you can recall and apply what you've learned. Answers aren't provided to these questions – they're designed to make you go back to your notes, think about the topic and practise constructing your own response.

Who's teaching you?

I'm Elizabeth Evans. I'm an ex-teacher and I now work in procurement. I've studied for the CIPS qualifications myself, so I know what it's like trying to learn all of this alongside work and everything else.
