Before we delve into the topic of setbecks, obstacles and failures I want to take a moment and define a few concepts. This is more than just a video about definitions. My intent is to show you why it is important to spell out definitions of the words before any discussion or problem solving: it is in the very act of defining and reflecting upon our definitions that the inception of problems and solutions take place.
Dealing with failures is all about the mindset. In this video I cover some of the mindsets that will help you face challenges heads on and with more ease.
While this course deals with things that go wrong and how to face them heads on, the best way to face the challenges is to prevent them in the first place, whenever possible. In this video I will share some ideas and strategies on how to reduce the likelehood of things going wrong while embracing the truth that one can never reduce this likelehood to zero.
When things do go wrong reacting quickly is often not the right thing to do. In this video I will discuss the triage mode: assessing what has happened, assess what needs to happen next, and assessing what is within and outside of your control and ability to change. We will also discuss the shock factor and why preparation is a necessary step before anything goes wrong in the first place.
We will talk about basic ways to deal with the four different things that can go wrong, and we will start with unexpected external interference. Since such interference is often followed by pain, the first thing to keep in mind is how to recover. Reflections on emotions will be followed by the discussion on how you can go around any given obstacle that finds itself on your way.
Once it's clear what kind of obstacle is in front of you, you need to sort everything into two categories: things you can and cannot control, that is, responsibility and acceptance. This video is about those things that are in the "can" control category such as, for example, how much of your goal can be feasibly achieved in spite of a given obstacle.
The next step in facing a given obstacle, after assessing how much of the original plan can be carried through, is to accept the new situation and re-plan. Re-planning has a psychological factor of making you feel like you are back in control. In this video we will discuss the mindset that allows for setting new and flexible goals based on the current situations, allowing us to re-gain control and move towards our goal in a wiser, more evidence-based, manner.

An overall look at a more practical perspective of setbacks.
In this video we will be talking about common setbacks and failures connected to health, that is, injuries and illnesses. No matter how healthy you are or how many precautions you take, you will have an injury or become ill at some point. In this video I discuss attitudes and actions that you can take when you are impaired physically due to an injury or illness and which mindsets could help you move past these setbacks.
In this video we are going to talk about setbacks and failures in the area of wealth and career and how to respond. Some of the topic discussed are unplanned expenses, inflexible budgeting strategies and the loss of a job. You will learn not only the value of thinking ahead of any unexpected event, but also how to create the mindset of abundance and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who share your values and goals.
Let's look at some of the setbacks that can occur in your social space. Socializing can be a little bit like investing. The best way of preventing being destroyed by a friendship or relationship ending is to diversify your friendships and relationships in general. We will also discuss the value of honesty and how the best policy against betrayal is radical honesty and living by your values.
The next set of setbacks and barriers concern your own psychological well-being. Just like illness and injury, mental injuries, strains or mental illness can affect you in ways that are beyond your control. Take, for example, the case of depression, stress or burnout: all of them may affect, among other things, your motivation and your problem solving abilities. In this video we will look at some strategies and mindsets that can help you shift your perspective and take care of yourself in order to reduce mental strain and create ideal conditions for a balanced life.
The final area of life that we are going to look at is that of purpose and mission. It could be that you don't have a purpose or a mission or that it was taken away from you. Both can be psychologically devastating. In this video we will discuss how to think about your mission and purpose and ways in which you can minimize the possibility of losing it by conceiving it in a way that makes it bulletproof to some of the possible setbacks in life. We will also discuss the concept of pivoting and how it can be used to regain your mission and purpose in life if a major setback has already taken place.

Recap: Key Mindset Principles
“Luck” is about variables - there are billions beyond our control
Plans don’t survive contact with the enemy - all plans are just a draft
What can go wrong, will go wrong - assume at least one thing won’t go to plan
Repeating a strategy that doesn’t work is insanity - always tweak it on your next attempt
Sometimes everything goes wrong - that’s just life, get up and keep moving forward
It’s either "upsetting" or "an opportunity to grow" - you choose. Everything is for your benefit if you want it to be
You can control your reaction (behaviour, not emotion), but you can’t control what happens to you
