Hi, and Welcome to the Course!
Relationships have a powerful influence on nearly every part of our lives. They can affect our emotional well-being, our mood, our stress levels, and even our physical health.
That is why I’m very happy to welcome you to this course on Relationship and Premarital Coaching.
Whether you are already working as a coach, counselor, therapist, or helping professional, or you simply want to better understand relationships in your own life, this course is designed to give you practical knowledge and tools that you can actually use.
When we created this training, our goal was simple: to make it practical, focused, and easy to follow, without leaving out the important psychological principles behind healthy relationships.
Throughout the course, you will learn tools that can strengthen your relationship coaching and counseling skills and help you better understand what happens between people when relationships become difficult.
And here's something important: these skills are not useful only in romantic relationships.
Many of the principles we will explore can also improve the way you communicate and connect with your children, parents, family members, friends, colleagues, supervisors, and employees.
Because although relationships may look very different on the surface, many of the underlying human needs are surprisingly similar.
We all want to feel heard, respected, and we want some sense of connection, autonomy, belonging, and emotional safety.
When those needs are repeatedly frustrated, relationships can become much more complicated.
So, throughout this course, we are going to look beneath the surface of relationship problems and ask a more useful question:
What is really happening between these two people?
By the end of this course, you will have developed practical skills that can help you:
Support couples who want to build healthier and more fulfilling relationships.
Coach individuals who are experiencing difficulties in intimate or romantic relationships.
Expand your coaching or counseling practice by developing greater competence in premarital issues.
Understand the basic principles of Choice Theory and Reality Therapy and how they can be applied to relationships.
Explore some of the psychological processes behind human behavior and interpersonal conflict.
Develop greater self-awareness while also learning to understand your clients and their relationship patterns more deeply.
Apply many of these tools to your own communication and relationships.
One of the ideas I want you to keep in mind from the very beginning is that relationship work is not simply about learning how to give people advice.
In fact, good relationship coaching is often less about telling people what to do and more about helping them understand what they are doing, why they are doing it, and what they might choose to do differently.
That distinction is going to be important throughout this course.
You will gradually build a practical toolbox that you can use when working with couples and individuals facing communication problems, emotional disconnection, conflict, unmet expectations, and other common relationship challenges.
Some of these ideas may also make you look at your own relationships differently.
And that's perfectly normal.
When we study relationships seriously, we almost always discover something about ourselves along the way.
A Little About Me
I'm Dr. Farzin Shahrokhi, a clinical neuropsychologist at Paya Academy.
My professional work is grounded in an integrative approach to psychotherapy and medical psychology, with particular interests in Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Couple and Family Therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches for individuals, couples, and families.
Throughout this course, I'll combine psychological theory with practical tools, real-life situations, and examples so that the material doesn't remain something you simply understand intellectually.
I want you to be able to use it. So I'm very pleased to have you here.
Take your time with the material, reflect on the exercises, and don't worry about trying to memorize everything immediately.
Think of this course as gradually building a relationship toolbox.
We'll add one useful tool at a time, understand when to use it—and, just as importantly, when not to use it.
So, if you're ready, let's get started.
