What does the future of peatland farming look like in practice? This course brings together two on-farm perspectives from across Europe to explore the real-world challenges and opportunities facing farmers working with wet and rehydrated peatlands. Julianne and Sebastian Petri share hard-won experience from their 280-hectare fen farm in eastern Germany, while Dr. Julia Casperd, Senior Lecturer in Wildlife and Land Management, and Scott Kirby, Farmers Weekly Awards Finalist for Farm Manager of the Year, present their research into cranberry production as a high-value paludiculture crop in the UK and Ireland.
By completing this course, you will explore:
Water retention, reed canary grass management, and biodiversity schemes on a working fen farm in Brandenburg
Machinery and equipment adaptations required for harvesting on wet peatland soils
Paludiculture biomass utilisation pathways and the policy and market barriers associated with each
Cranberries as a high-value paludiculture crop, including agronomy, harvesting methods, and market potential
Value chain development and direct sales strategies for viable paludiculture enterprises
