Description: EPS Geofoam is a lightweight, geo-synthetic fill material that consists of closed-cell expanded polystyrene (EPS) and meets or exceeds the requirements of ASTM D6817. Geofoam is manufactured in a common density range between 1 to 3 lb/ft3 and is an ideal, lightweight fill alternative for many construction applications. The Right Way to Spell the Word: Expanded Polystyrene ESP Geofoam, EPS Geofoam, Geofoam, Geo-foam, and Geo Foam. Geofoam or EPS Geofoam are the two ways that are correct. Where Does The Word Geofoam Come From? The University of Syracuse has a Geofoam research department that came up with the term Geofoam. All it really does is describe the fact that the foam will be used under the ground. Geo, for ground, and foam, for... foam. You get the point. It is a very simple idea, but it works every time. Uses: Geofoam is commonly used in areas where unstable soil conditions exist and as an alternative to various fill materials. The unique load disbursement and lightweight characteristics of Geofoam help to minimize any post-construction settling. Geofoam is also used as backfill to reduce lateral earth pressure behind adjacent structures such as retaining walls.

Benifits of using Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)
Expanded Polystyrene comes as small beads of resin. The beads are impregnated with the naturally occurring gas, pentane. The beads are then heated in a pre-expander; with the combination of this heat, and the rapid release of the gas, the bead is expanded to almost 50 times its original size. After expansion, the beads are aged between 12 and 48 hours, which allows the internal vacuum in the beads to refill with air. The pre-expanded EPS beads are then injected into a steam chest mould.Steam applies heat and pressure, which fuses the beads together into the required shape or form. Expanded Polystyrene has many useful properties. It has low thermal conductivity, and therefore can be used as an insulator against heat and cold. It is widely used to package fresh fish and produce, as it is able to help keep food fresh through the distribution chain. It is also used within the pharmaceutical industry to package items that are temperature sensitive, and need to be transported throughout the world. With its high compressive strength, it is excellent at absorbing shocks, and protecting delicate items.As there is no loss of strength in damp conditions, it is ideal for cool-chain products. Being moisture resistant, EPS easilyexceeds the most stringent of hygiene requirements. Made up of 98% air, Expanded Polystyrene is extremely lightweight, and as a result, the cost of transport of this material is significantly reduced. This in turn reduces emissions due to fuel consumption, thus less impact on global warming. Further, Expanded Polystyrene is odourless and non-toxic. It does not, nor has ever emitted chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and is recyclable. The uses for EPS are limitless. It can be moulded into any shape or form to meet the customer’s and their product’s protection and insulation needs.

Expanded polystyrene foam Expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) is usually white and made of expanded polystyrene beads. Some new innovative EPS products are grey due to the inclusion of graphite, which substantially increases the insulation performance. EPS is safe, non-toxic and inert. Familiar uses include packing "peanuts" and molded packing material for cushioning fragile items inside boxes. It is commonly packaged as rigid panels (size 4 by 8 or 2 by 8 square feet in the United States), which are also known as "bead-board". Thermal resistivity is usually about 28 m·K/W (or R-4 per inch in American customary units). Some EPS boards have a flame spread of less than 25 and a smoke-developed index of less than 450, which means they can be used without a fire barrier (but require a 15 minute thermal barrier) according to US building codes. A growing use of EPS in construction are Insulating concrete forms. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) isn’t just foam insulation; it’s also an innovated building material that can be used in a wide variety of construction projects. EPS is the ideal choice for green building designs, offering tangible environmental advantages with long-term energy efficiency. EPS has been recognized since the 1950s as excellent insulation but new applications are using EPS to addstructural integrity and energy-efficiency.
