What you write on your email, may look entirely different on the receiver's computer.
It's best to keep your emails 45 to 50 columns/characters long, so it can stay looking like you typed it.
Remember people now read emails on all types of devices so it'll look different from your computer to a cell phone.

Read your emails out loud to hear if it sounds stilted or like a casual, yet professional conversation.
Make sure all your words are positive and upbeat. See the difference wording can make in this before and after example. Same Message. Different wording. Note how the after one reflects an upbeat positive message.

How do you first make those connections?
How do you begin working with people who are smarter or more successful than you?
There are 3 main methods I use to connect with influential people:
1. Give value.
Don't ask them for anything. Seriously. Maybe your intention is to receive help from them, but you need to think of the long-term relationship. If you email a successful person (especially if you don't know them), and immediately ask for a favor - you can be sure you'll end up in their trash folder. You need to show them what you can do for them, and then expect nothing in return. I learned this early on in my career and this one rule alone has allowed me to meet and work with extremely influential and successful people, such as my mentor Anthony Robbins. Give value - and expect nothing in return.
2. Follow through.
Now you've given someone value. Maybe they took you up on the offer, maybe they didn't. Either way you should be following up with this person every month. You need to show consistent and constant effort in this relationship. Don't give them value and then immediately ask for something in return. You need to genuinely build a relationship with this person. If you're only looking for a one time favor, then don't bother contacting them. It looks bad on you, and most people can see right through it.
3. Just ask.
I'm not talking about asking for something - I'm talking about just trying. It amazes me how often you can meet someone or make a connection just by trying because the majority of people don't make the effort. They assume it's too hard or that they don't stand a chance. Don't be the majority.
