To know if you are actually improving, you need to measure where your website load speed and performance. Here are three great and free resources for measure and tracking changes in your performance:

  1. WebPageTest.org
  2. PageSpeed Insights by Google
  3. GTMetrix
Keeping a record of load speed is critical to know if you are improving.

Before we get to the techniques that optimize your Wordpress performance, we take a look at the basics you should address before you proceed:

  1. Choose a high quality hosting company that is concerned about performance.
  2. Choose a quality Wordpress theme that is well coded - and how you can validate.
  3. Remove unnecessary plugins that are bloating up your website.
Once, these basic steps are taken, you can proceed with the optimization techniques below.
Section 2: Wordpress Performance Optimization

Images typically take up the most bytes on a webpage. So its critical that we optimize them.

Here, we take a look at how to set up a combination of plugins that:

  1. Automatically serves smaller images for smaller devices.
  2. Shrinks the file size of all images.
  3. Doesn't load images till they are needed.

If you're website has a lot videos, this plugin can potentially make a huge difference in the load speed of your pages. If your website has no / very few videos then you can skip this step.

A clean database is a quick database. Learn how to

  1. Remove unused tables left behind by deleted plugins
  2. Set up a scheduler for deleting excess revisions, trashed posts and perform database optimizations.

Caching is like handing over a printout when somebody asks for a copy, rather than writing a new page by hand.

Caching can make the largest difference when it comes to your load speed. But setting it up correctly can take up to an hour.

Luckily, I've got you covered. Just import the attached w3TotalCacheSettings.php file and you're done!

Cloudflare is an awesome free service that provides security and performance optimizations to websites.

Learn how to set it up and configure it correctly for the highest performance.

You can set it up with about 5 minutes of actual work and it integrates very nicely with w3TotalCache.
