Let's start at the beginning: Music Publishing 101.  Even if you're not a beginner, consider this a refresher course on some very important basics which, actually, many artists and songwriters ask me about often, from all levels of expertise.  It's important to know these basics and build up from here. So, let's get started!

What is a Music Publisher and how does Publishing work?
11:13

In this lecture, you will learn about PRO's (Performing Arts Organizations), the different ways to register entire compositions with some PRO's, and how ownership splits work, whether acting as publisher, songwriter, or both.  This will save you time and the headaches of figuring out how to get your portion of songs registered properly so you can get paid for your work or part of your work.

Interested in licensing your songs for films, commercials, tv, etc? You need to understand synchronization rights, how they work, and how to negotiate the right deal for your sync licenses.  There is no standard rate for syncs, this is all negotiated, and you don't want to get underpaid!  We'll also touch upon the very important concept of MFN (Most Favored Nations.). This is very valuable.  You need to know this!

It's important for songwriters to understand that getting a publisher isn't the sole solution!  There is so much more to it than that.  You not only have to be sure getting into a publishing deal at all is right for you in the current state of your career, but which one is right for you.  The idea of it all can seem really overwhelming. It is important to remember that this is a business of "people" before the "paper."  In order to be able to follow your gut to make the right decisions in your career, you need the right counsel and enough knowledge to know how to navigate the task of having the the right people back your career.  Now, let's get into it!  I want to save you the headache of ending up in the wrong deal!!  Send questions if you have any!
