Section 1: How the Web Works
01:19

A brief introduction to the first chapter

08:45

Our course starts off with an introduction into how the web works. You don’t need to be an IT professional to understand the basics of how information flows over the Internet, but it is important to have a solid working knowledge of the concepts. Websites contain information, and this section gives you a clear understanding of how that information gets to the users who need it.

00:34

A brief summary of the first chapter.

Section 2: Introduction to XHTML
00:50

A brief introduction to chapter 2.

18:18

What is XHTML and how is it different from plain old HTML? Why is it better? This class is vitally important because here we learn the latest markup language that drives the web, XHTML. In this part of the course we begin building our project site using XHTML and web standards laid down by the World Wide Web Consortium, an international community that develops standards to ensure the long-term growth of the Web. You will be amazed at the power and simplicity of this easy to use markup language!

Classes Cover:

  • Most commonly used elements
  • Linking
  • Lists
  • Tables
  • Forms
  • Much more!
00:34

A brief summary of chapter 2.

Section 3: Your First Web Site
00:44

A brief introduction to Chapter 3.

44:47

Now that we have an understanding of the basics of XHTML it is time to jump into our first real web site!

Over the next few chapters we are going to build a site for our fictitious web design business, Maui Webtronics, where potential clients will find information about our company. The new site is going to have the following features:

  • A "Home" page introducing the company and welcoming the visitor
  • An "About Us" page to display in-depth company information
  • A "Contact Us" page for contact information (no big surprise there)
  • A "Proposals" page where prospective clients can tell us about their project
  • A "Products" page where people can buy a t-shirt with our logo
00:26

A brief summary of chapter 3.

Section 4: Gotta Have Style
00:31

A brief introduction to chapter 4.

42:18

In this chapter we learn about casscading style sheets or CSS. CSS is a language that allows us to change elements such as font, text color, background, borders and the position of elements on the page. CSS was designed to keep the content of web pages separate from the presentation or layout. By using CSS you can change the way your pages look without ever having to touch your content.

00:24

A brief summary of chapter 4.

Section 5: Designing Your Layout with CSS
00:26

A brief introduction of chapter 5.

48:15

In the early days of web design CSS was used primarily to style text on the page, while other methods were used to control layout. Modern web browsers, however, all support the full capabilities of CSS, which makes it easy to create borders, backgrounds, and position items anywhere on a document.

00:41

A brief summary of chapter 5.

Section 6: Tables
01:14

A brief introduction to chapter 6.

13:56

What is a table? A table is a method of arranging data into rows and columns of cells. If you have ever looked at a calendar or used a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel then you are familiar with this concept. In this chapter we learn how to create tables with html and style them with css.

00:23

A brief summary of chapter 6.

Section 7: Working with Images
00:22

A brief introduction to chapter 7.

29:43

Though informative, relevant text is essential to any website, a picture is still worth "a thousand words." The Web would be a pretty boring place without images, which not only make your site more exciting, but also easier to use. In this chapter we will learn how to manipulate images using Adobe Photoshop, and the best practices for utilizing those images in our site.

00:41

A brief summary of chapter 7.

Section 8: Getting Input from Users
00:39

A brief introduction to chapter 8.

38:18

Anyone who has ever purchased a product, signed up for a newsletter, or created any kind of account on the Internet is familiar with forms. Forms are special web pages that collect data such as "Name", "Address", "Email", etc., and send that data to a server for processing. With forms, we create two-way communication on the Web. Every time you enter information in your Facebook account, or buy something on Ebay, or even Twitter, you are using a web form.

00:37

A brief summary of chapter 8.

Section 9: Introduction to JavaScript
00:45

A brief introduction to chapter 9.

35:16

What is JavaScript? JavaScript is an object-oriented scripting language that lets you make your pages interact with your users and respond to what they do. You can do some really amazing stuff with JavaScript, and we're going to look at the basic building blocks in this chapter.

00:37

A brief summary of chapter 9.

Section 10: Putting Your Site on the Web
00:14

A brief introduction to chapter 10.

27:25

We have our site files all ready, working well and looking good. How do we put our creation on the Internet? Before we go into the specifics of launching our site, we need to do a quick review of how the Internet works.

00:39

A brief summary of chapter 10.

Section 11: Ecommerce with PayPal
01:00

A brief introduction to chapter 11.

    good beginner course

I liked this course. It is a good beginner course and it will help you learn html but it will not be the end of your html journey. No course will do that. You will need to continue practicing the lessons. You should practice as much as possible. I did run into problems and I reached out for help and he responded. I also liked it provided a project to complete.

    • Jim Filippi

    All the Escentials

It starts out a little slow but gets very deep into the critical areas anyone would need to know when developing a web site. Excellent presentation. Easy to follow and clear examples.

    • Charles Reavis

Web Design from the Ground Up is very well organized and easy to follow. It gives me a good basis for taking the other courses I intend to complete. I really like the companion text.

    • Shawn Telford

    Very informative!

I really enjoyed this course. The pace was just right and the information was presented in a logical manner. It was easy to follow and I feel I learned a lot.

    • Katharina Rossmeier

easy to follow, all Basics covered

I could follow the teacher easily and finalize my first nice Project with some cool Features. The course covers all Basics and gives you hints where to go to deepen your knowledge. It could have covered more in-depths on photoshop and JavaScript though, in my opinion. But if you are new to web design, I can absolutely recommend this course.
