Steve Curl begins this demonstration with his compositional sketch of palm trees, which will help define the layout of the sky and eventual colorful sunset.
After completing his initial composition of palm trees, Steve introduces key terms like "hot spot", and begins mixing radiant colors in streaks to dissipate the sunset imagery to avoid stripes.
After letting his sunset painting dry for a given time, Steve "dives" into further detail with the "ripple effect" upon the ocean below the hot spot.
After letting his sunset background dry completely, Steve begins painting his silhouette palm trees using ultramarine deep blue mixed with permanent alizarin crimson to create a rich dark color that is complimented with neutral tint. By combining these different paints together, Steve paints a very slick and realistic silhouette of a trio of palm trees.
By adding some small grass along the bottom of the painting to ground the palm trees, Steve finishes the sunset painting.
Steve Curl is a rare individual; he's both an award-winning artist and an award-winning instructor who trained in art school years ago. He loves being outdoors painting landscapes and seascapes inspired by his travels. He regularly teaches in Palo Alto and Yosemite.
