Welcome to the course! I'm Louise and I've been blogging and vlogging for around 8 years. I'm going to be teaching you everything you need to know right from day 1 to grow a Youtube Channel into a full time job. You don't need any prior knowledge, just passion and commitment! Let's go :)
In this section we'll look at the first steps you'll need to take towards creating a channel. Deciding what you want to focus on, what your brand will be, and what to be called are all the foundations to a great creation.
Choosing a niche isn't essential (a lot of channels cover a wide range of areas), but it can really help you get started and grow quickly at the beginning. I'd suggest choosing something you're passionate about, is a growing market, and that you can branch off from later.
Deciding on what to call your youtube channel can be the first falling hurdle. People often get so hung up on this that they never start - make sure that's not you!! Brainstorm some ideas, and check out my list of suggestions, and then get cracking with the next phases of creation. If in doubt just use your real name - it won't go out of fashion and it's unique to you!
In this section we'll cover all the technicalities of how your channel should look and feel. Getting your page set up right is really important to increase your subscriber rate, and adding finishing touches will make all the difference to your success.
Your Channel page is almost like your website home page - it's the biggest chance a viewer gets to learn about you and be tempted to subscribe. Be sure to make it the best representation that you can! We'll learn here how to set up playlists, sections and an eye catching banner, all designed to keep viewers watching and subscribing.
Creating a channel trailer can be daunting, but it needn't be permanent. At the very least you should set your favourite video as your trailer, but I also encourage you to record a special introductory video for new viewers. You can update it and change it as your channel evolves, but create something for now and see how it goes!
In this lecture we look at a few final touches to make your channel really stand out. Getting the settings and features perfect will make all the difference if a viewer is considering subscribing.
If you're stuck for inspiration this video is for you! We'll cover a whole range of different video ideas to help you get started. Whether you want to vlog, make tutorials, follow tags, do scripted videos, or film gaming play - there's something for everyone!
Choosing how often you are going to release a video might not seem like an important consideration but it will hugely affect your life. Consistency is very important so if you decide to post one video a week you need to be sure you're going to have the time to film, edit, upload, and promote that video every single week. Think carefully!
In this section we're going to look at everything you can do to grow your channel. Let's get is as big and popular, as fast as possible!
Sharing your channel on social media may sound simple, but it's very important to get right. You should also make sure it's easy for other people to share your video, and think of some popular places you can promote yours outside of just your own feed.
SEO means Search Engine Optimisation. It's simply how high your video comes up in Google, or on Youtube, when people type in particular words. Choose which words you want people to find you on, and then focus your energies on getting high for those. Here's how....
Youtube provides the Tag function to help them know what your video is about and therefore rank you better. If you get your tags right more people will find you without you even approaching them. It can make or break your channel so think about it carefully.
Doing a collaboration video simply means pairing up with someone else. It could be a local business, or another youtuber, and it's a great way to get your name out there. All their subscribers will see your name, and hopefully subscribe to your channel, and they're a lot of fun to make.
In this section we'll cover some quick fire Frequently Asked Questions to make sure you've got everything perfect on your channel.
Music adds a huge effect to your video - it can totally change the mood and makes everything feel more professional. However, it can be a bit of a minefield avoiding all the copyright laws etc. In this video I'll help you understand the rules, and what options you have for using free music.
Your thumbnail is arguably the most important factor on whether people click on your video. Only your content can make them stay around to watch, but if you don't have an eye-catching thumbnail they won't even get that far. Take the time to create a consistent style you can use across the whole of Youtube and then make sure it's eye-catching and fun.
It's very likely that your ultimate focus is always getting more subscribers. The more you have the more opportunities will open up to you for earning money or working with brands. Here's a few tried and tested tips on how to boost your subscriber numbers.
Choosing the title of the video is normally the last thing you do before hitting 'Publish' so is often quite overlooked. However, it's vital for both search and people deciding whether to click. So be sure to be considerate about what words you use, and how it comes across to potential viewers.
The description box might seem like an afterthought but it's a very important section. Not only does it give your viewers helpful information or links, it can also earn you money, lead them to your social media, and help youtube know what your video is about for search. Don't underestimate it!
Your end slide is not vital, but it can really help with converting viewers to subscribers, and makes your videos look really professional. Here I'll show you what mine looks like, and give plenty of ideas and advice for you to make your own.
Welcome to this section! Here we will be looking at everything you'll need to create great content - from kit to buy to camera skills to learn, and even how to edit. Get ready!
The professionalism of your videos will be judged not just on what you say, but how your overall frame looks. It's important to consider what's in your background and how it reflects your content. Do you want a simple white background to avoid distractions, or a warm homely display to be relatable.
When it comes to lighting, natural light is the best - but it's so rarely available. In winter, evenings, or rainy days you could be stuck if you don't buy artificial lights. The good news is, lighting is far cheaper than you probably think! Here's some thoughts on your options.
Obviously you'll need some kind of camera (even if it's just your phone) to be successful on Youtube - but what else? In this lecture we look at all the other bits and pieces you may not have thought of having.
Choosing what camera to buy is an important, and expensive, decision. Be sure to consider what exactly you're going to use it for, and what direction your channel is going in. Are you doing vlogs or sit down videos. Do you need a drone or a tripod? All these things will save you from making mistakes with your money.
Many people think spending a lot of money on a good camera is how to get beautiful footage, but the truth is that it's the lens that matters. Buy an affordable camera, and invest in an excellent lens. In this video I'll talk you through some of the features to look for and why.
Editing is a very underestimated skill, but it can be the dividing feature between an amateur and professional video. It's what keeps the viewer entertained so they don't click off, and you can create some amazing artistic effects. Here I'll show you my favourite techniques and you can try them out at home.
Of course you could take a whole 2 hour lecture on photography, aperture, and light, but I'm going to try and quickly cover everything you'll need for your Youtube channel. Understanding the basics of photography will make a vital difference to the quality of your videos, and allow you to create professional looking shots.
In this next section we're going to cover everything you need t know about making money and working with brands.
Money can be a very taboo topic in the online community so a lot of the time it's very hard to know what you should charge. In this lecture I'll expose several people's pricing and give you a guide of how to set your own.
Working with brands is one of the most fun, and profitable, parts of Youtube. There's a lot of amazing brands looking for Youtubers to work with these days, but you'll need to present a professional, reliable and creative front. Here's how!
Congratulations! You've completed the course. Be sure to leave a link to your channel in the Discussion Forum so we can all support each other. Happy Creating!
