As a Special Educator for 26 years, 24 at the Robin Ward School For Exceptional Children (PS177Q, NYC), I created "Video Portfolios for Non-Testable Students" a radically different approach to assessment and "Work Center Education" a modular, adaptable educational scaffold designed to teach 21st century employment skills to spectrum students through the operation of a for-profit business. Both were technology-based programs for autism.
I have the dubious honor of being the first teacher to submit video as evidence of progress in the New York State Alternate Assessment. I produced three videos for the NY State Department of Education documenting pilot programs for autism and subsequently developed the Beta autism website for the NYC Department of Education
My interest in the adoption of technology for autism education is based on personal experience employing technology to successfully engage hundreds of language-impaired students in activities promoting metacognition, language and communication and volition.
