Mentoring the Middle started over a McDonald’s breakfast a few years back. As experienced Middle Leaders we were tired of seeing all the resources and CPD out there for senior leaders and classroom teachers with nothing for us. Overworked and often overlooked the role of the Middle Leader is arguably the most important in ac school, as we say ‘the cog that makes the school work’. Middle Leaders act as a conduit for information, a translator of actions and a decisive element in the success of new initiatives. Middle Leaders face the daily demands of making the links between the often abstract vision of Senior Leaders and the concrete realism of the workload facing the classroom teachers. Despite this they face the most challenges, are put in the most difficult situations and support often lags behind the levels given to Senior Leaders and classroom teachers.
We spent time reflecting on our experiences, talking with colleagues and friends and starting to note down our advice to share with them. This took off in ways we couldn’t imagine and Mentoring the Middle was born. We started Mentoring the Middle to close this gap, and to provide more support, advice and guidance to Middle Leaders. We are here to listen and to answer the problems you can’t ask anyone in your organisation. We are here to help you keep up-to-date on what’s happening in the world of education; and we are here to share experiences and elements of our own tried-and-tested middle leadership practice to help you to develop yours.
