I help stubborn farmers work better together
For the past decade, I've been turning around the most dire farm debt and farm succession cases across North America. I help stubborn farm families work better together. When you think about it, anything you can do to improve the QUALITY of family decision-making eliminates both the frustration of working with family and skyrockets farm profitability.
I'm a seventh generation farm boy and there was never a farm kid more hellbent to carry on family tradition. Unfortunately, farm succession didn't go successfully and my parents divorced as a result of our experience. I turned my bad situation into a good one for many and have been saving family farms ever since.
I've been working on this course since 2010 when I had to take a gun out of a suicidal farmers hands. The farmer was a smart guy who came unraveled when challenged by the frustration of working with his son. In succession planning, everyone focuses on "Who gets what" and nobody has ever focused on HOW the family works together during the first five years. Everyone talks about the third generation curse, but nobody has ever studied WHY only 15% of family farms pass on to the third generation. I have.
Similar to a pre-marriage preparation course, this course's purpose is to help the farm family realize that the first five years of a son/daughter coming home to farm is tougher than anticipated. It's not all sunshine and unicorns. This course talks about several topics you'd never hear openly discussed in public with practical advice that fits within the culture of how a family farm functions. It will dramatically improve your odds of avoiding many problems in the future with your own family business partnership.
I have written five books on this topic, spoke in 16 states and have a syndicated column in several farm papers worldwide.
