Roland Legiardi-Laura

Roland is a documentary filmmaker, poet and educator. He developed PowerPoetry based on his work in New York City public schools and he serves
as the organization's chief executive. His poetry has been widely published and anthologized and he is the long-time director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, where the slam poetry phenomenon originated. He has also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the New York Foundation for the Arts. Roland's most recent documentary "To Be Heard" tells the story of three high school poets from the Bronx who use their poetry to change their lives and impact the world. His motto is, "If you don't learn to write your own life story, someone else will write it for you."
