Music Educator at The Domestic Musician
My love for music started at the age of 6, when I started taking piano lessons. I then went on to also learn the clarinet, and played both instruments on scholarship in several ensembles in college, and continue fostering my love of music today.
At my college graduation ceremony, I earned the Top Music Education Major award for my graduation class. After earning my Bachelors in Music Education from Oral Roberts University, I started my first teaching position in the middle of the school year at a low income elementary school.
Having few resources and teaching materials, I was asked to restart the music program which had been non existent for 7 years.
Over the next several years, I created my own curriculum map and developed lesson plans that met my students where they were at. During my second year of teaching, I won the Teacher of the Year and Teacher of Today awards.
Along with teaching full time, I also taught several private piano students, was the Tulsa Children’s Chorus accompanist, the Boston Avenue Children’s chorus, and juggled being a wife, mom, teacher, and pianist.
After meeting several music teachers who faced similar situations or have switched to teaching elementary music from a secondary or regular classroom position, I started The Domestic Musician blog, The Elementary Music Teacher Blueprint course, the Learn Piano At Home Course, the HARMONY membership site, as well as The Elementary Music Teacher and Learn Music Together podcasts.
I believe piano lessons shouldn’t feel stressful, and your child should be able to learn on their own time and at their own pace.
