I wrote my first program in 1988. I was 11. First website in 1996, first class degree in Computer Science in 2000, and I still haven't found anything I'd rather do.

25+ years since then, across the European Space Agency, Intel, Microsoft and investment banks like Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan. Published author, and I've spent a good chunk of my life on conference stages teaching developers the things I wish someone had told me sooner.

Then I spent a decade on climate. In 2020 I co-founded the Green Software Foundation, a non-profit consortium of 70+ organisations building the standards and tooling for software with zero harmful environmental impact, and ran it as Executive Director until 2026. Green software isn't a separate discipline, it's just software that doesn't waste energy. Efficient code, sensible architecture, knowing what your stack actually costs to run. Good engineering and green engineering keep turning out to be the same thing, and that shows up in how I teach.

Now I'm independent, building, writing and teaching full time.

What I believe

- Your job as a developer is to make other people more productive. That's what computing is.

- So if you're not obsessed with your own productivity, it doesn't bode well for the people relying on you.

- First principles beat cargo cult. Understand the why and the how takes care of itself.

- Tools move fast (they always did, AI just moved the goalposts again). Fundamentals move a lot slower. I teach both, and I'm always clear about which is which.

- Waste is a design flaw. Wasted CPU cycles, wasted watts, wasted hours of your life. Same problem.

How I teach

- 100% practical. If you can't use it on Monday morning, I've wasted your time.

- I value my time and I value yours. No padding, no filler.
