Do you sometimes have a hard time coming up with ideas or being creative? We all do from time to time. In this lecture we are going to play a game that will help you exercise your creativity and imagination. The game is to take some random shapes and lines and turn them into a drawing.
In order to complete this course you are going to need a few things. First you will need a basic understanding of drawing fundamentals. Drawing fundamentals include Shape, Line, Form, Simple Perspective, and Observational skills. You will also need some tools. Through out the course I will be using Drawing Pencils, Colored Pencils, Eraser, Paper, Pencil Sharpener, Toned Paper, and Reference.
make sure you are equipped with the right tools before you venture down this journey of drawing from your imagination. I have attached a list of all the tools you will need to complete this course.
Coming up with an Idea can be one of the hardest parts about drawing from your imagination. In this lecture we will break down the process of coming up with Ideas and how to flesh them out. Keep in mind that I'm sharing with you how I work through my Ideas and what works for me may have to be slightly changed to work for you.
Now that you have an Idea we can finally start developing our it into a drawing. The first step will be to research and find reference photos for your drawing. My top places to find research and reference are Google, Pinterest, books, and real life. Reference is especially important because you many not have built up a visual library in your head yet. You will have to find visual reference to base your drawing off of.
In this lecture I will show you two different examples of searching for reference. The first example will be reverse engineering the research I did for a drawing that already exists. The second example will be me researching for a character that I will be drawing through out the process of this course.
It can be hard to find your art style and can also take some time. I'm going to walk you through some steps that you can take to start developing an art style. By copying many different artist that you like you will eventually find your own drawing style.
In this lecture lets have a look at a few examples of other artists styles. We'll break them down and figure out what are the different components of that style. Then we will apply those style components to our own drawing.

Before you start drawing in all the details of your design you are going to want to do thumbnail sketches. These are small little drawing that you will do many of so that you can experiment with different ideas, pose, shapes etc. They are drawn small and with little detail so that you are not investing to much time into them.
Another way you can create thumbnails that will demonstrate your values in your drawing is by doing tones paper thumbnails. To create a toned paper thumbnail you will need to use a black and white prisma colored pencil on toned paper.
You can also use thumbnails to map out the composition in your drawing. This includes finding your focus, negative space, as well as balance in your drawing. In this lecture I'll show you examples of all of these.
Follow along with me while I draw my thumbnails for my final drawing. This will give you a good idea of how to draw your own thumbnails. You will notice and see that each thumbnails takes me less than a minute to draw and has very little detail.
I believe that one of the best ways to learn is to watch others so I decided to film myself drawing the rest of my concept sketches. Don't worry it won't take long because I spend of the process in a time-lapse.
Now that you understand what concept sketching is for we can go a head and start drawing your concept sketches. In this lecture I will demonstrate to you how I draw my concept sketches. I will break my concept sketches down into two parts. The first part will be drawing character concept sketches.
This is part two of drawing our concept sketches. In this lecture I will how I draw the concept sketches for my monkey character. Remember that it's important to look at reference when your drawing things you have never drawn before.
I think that watching someone else draw is one of the best ways to learn. So in this lecture I have created a time-laps video of me finishing the rest of my concept sketches. Don't to forget to draw multiple variations of your idea. Drawing multiple variations allows you to choose your best drawings and ideas.
When it comes to drawing pencils there are many different types. In this lecture I'm going to go over all the different types of graphite pencils and what the markings on them mean. Then I'm going to draw an example drawing that will demonstrate the use of a dark, mid, and light tone pencil.
Many students have asked me how to overcome creative block. I don't believe in creative block as much as I think your just not drawing enough. In this lecture I will teach you how to do something called brain dumping that will help exercise your creativity and come up with ideas.
Color can be a very important part of your drawings. Color can create mood as well as create a focal point in your drawing. Color can also make your drawings very ugly so it's important that you have a good understanding of it. In this lecture I will teach you how to choose colors that look good together.
In this lecture I will show you how to use your reference material to create amazing concept sketches. We will break down three separate components from three separate reference photos and ably them to a sketch.
I always like to add some extra value to my courses with bonus lectures. In this lecture I'm going to teach you 5 tips and techniques to help you with your drawings.
One of the best things you can do for your drawings is add some contrast. There are very many different forms of contrast and in this lecture we are going to go over all of them. I will also be showing you examples of each form of contrast.
One of the most important skills you can have when it comes to drawing from your imagination is the ability to draw loosely. It's important to be able to draw loosely so you can work your way up to your final lines. These final lines are called redefining the line.
Shape language is a very important part of drawing. In this lecture we will be talking about the three different shapes that make up all drawings. We will also look at how to block out basic shapes to create a base swell as shape contrast for your drawings.
In this lecture you will learn how to block your drawings out with shapes. Being able to draw with shapes is a very important part of drawing. Think of shapes as a foundation for your drawings. If you foundation is week you drawing won't look that good.
In this lecture you will learn about studies and why they are important. A study is a drawing of a real life object. Before you embark on a drawing it's a good idea to do a few studies of the components that will be in your drawing.
If you want to draw realistic drawings you need to understand how to draw form. In this lecture I will break down the process of drawing form. We will also talk about how to visualize form in your head.
Form is only achievable without the use of construction lines by incorporating lighting into your drawing. In this lecture we will have a look a t how to use lighting in our drawings. You will also learn the different types of shadows and highlights and how to apply them to your drawing.
Drawing on toned paper can be very useful since your paper is already a mid tone you only have to worry about shadows and highlights. In this lecture we will have a look at different ways we can draw on toned paper and create realistic form.
Foreshortening is a very important aspect of drawing that is very often overlooked. But if you learn to apply it to your drawings they will become much better. Foreshortening is when the closer an object is to a viewer the bigger it appears.
There is a difference between drawing from your imagination and drawing from your head. When you draw form your imagination you have an Idea that you want to get out on paper. When you draw form your head you are pulling form your visual library and drawing without reference.
When you see an amazing illustration you might wonder how they composed such a beautiful piece. In most cases the illustration went through a creative process. The creative process start in the idea faze and finishes at the final artwork.
There is a stigma with many people when it comes to tracing. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with tracing as long as you are not stealing someone else work. Tracing can be used to transfer your own drawings, tracing reference, and can even be used as a learning tool.
In this lecture I'm going to teach you how to use every day objects as inspiration for your drawings. Sometimes you might feel like your stuck or you might have a rough Idea but you can't actually visualize the shapes of your drawing. Using everyday objects to base your drawings off of is a great way to overcome this problem.
Now the we have created a handful of concept sketches we can beguine to combine these ideas. Using our best components from our concept sketches we will beguine to combine them into our final concept sketch. Remember that the more concept sketches you do the better your final concept sketch will turn out.
