There was a fascinating life lesson I learned a few years ago while reading a magazine one day.

So I was reading this article, and it was talking about how Lobsters grow. Now, I can’t say that I was initially interested in it, but as the article pointed out, the lobster is a soft sea animal, that lives inside of a rigid shell – and just to get clear here, this ridged shell is something that does not expand. 

The question you might be asking yourself here, is, if this lobster lives inside of such a ridged shell, how could it possibly grow? Well, as the lobster grows, the shell it lives in becomes very confining, and the lobster comes to a point where it begins to feel under pressure, and, starts to feel uncomfortable.

So, the lobster goes to the bottom of the seabed, surrounds itself by rocks so it can disguise and protect itself from other predatory fish, it casts off its old shell, and over time, it starts to produce a new shell, that’s big enough for it to grow into.

As time goes on, this new shell will also begin to get uncomfortable, so again, as the lobster starts feeling under pressure, it goes back to the seabed where it carries out the whole procedure once more. Throughout the rest of its life, the lobster will repeat this process many times - as many times as it needs to, to grow to it’s fullest potential.

I just want to point out here, that the stimulus for the lobster to grow is that it ‘feels uncomfortable’. Now, if you think about it, if lobsters had human doctors, they would never grow.

They’d be told to take some time off work, do more exercise, eat healthier and perhaps practice some meditation or yoga exercises …. The doctor might even give the lobster some valium, and for a short space of time, the lobster feels fine, but it doesn’t take off its shell, and in effect, it never grows.

You see, the Lobster principle tells us that in times of stress, even though we don’t like these feelings, they are signals for periods of personal growth. And if we can learn to use adversity to our advantage, then we also get to grow through times of pressure and stress.

We all have differing stress management skills and strategies.

Some people lack these skills altogether, others are masters at handling any stressor in their life, these people are usually phenomenal at developing psychological resilience or overcoming personal adversity. 

Think of people as cups and their stressors as water. Some cups are mugs and can hold a ton of water before they overflow, and others are tea cups and can only hold a little water before they overflow.

In all things, there are costs and benefits.  So you have to the consider the cost of prevention and weight it against the expense of the cure. 

A malaria vaccine could be given to everyone in the US and prevent malaria altogether.   But the cost far exceeds the cost of treating and curing after the fact the population that ends up with malaria should that happen. 

Or consider the possibility of daily taking some prophylactic for malaria might cost $1000/mo.  That wouldn't be worth it.  A cure is much less than a $1000. 

Contrast that with something like HIV.   People willing to spend $1000+ per month to take medications which can prevent HIV infection.  The reason is the cost of a cure is price less because there is no cure.  So, the prevention is worth $1000/mo  (assuming you are at risk).

But in general, prevention is better than cure.  Because in general prevention is cheaper than a cure.   Thus the maxim: "A stitch in time saves nine."

When workloads and pressure mount up in our lives, important things can become easily overlooked. It sounds silly, but SOME stress in our life can lead to FURTHER stress down the road.

Lack of TIME is always a huge part of the stress equation, and often, we can do something about it.

We stress because of deadlines imposed by others and ourselves. Some of us are addicted to progress. If you’re a GTD (get things done) person who makes lists, sets goals, and self-imposed deadlines, you’re doing it to yourself.

Having deadlines put there by others is bad enough, but then we make matters worth by adding our own? Time pressure does to stress what pressure does to cooking. Accelerates and intensifies.

Think about the stress in your life. If there were fewer deadlines . . . If there was more time, wouldn’t your stress level go down.

The 'Stepping Out of Stress' Secret

If you were to translate this old proverb more literally, you might come up with: “So teach us to number our days, that we might make wiser decisions about how we spend our time.”

What does it mean to number our days? It’s not the ability to count how many days we have lived or to predict how many days we have left. Numbering our days means realizing the brevity of life. It means knowing that we only have so many days on this earth, and therefore, we want to “seize the day,” living each day to the fullest (and outside of stress).

However, to develop this life perspective, it can be useful to have a rough idea about how many days we might have remaining and left to live.

Counting Our Days & Appreciating Our Time

When a friend of mine announced that she was pregnant, she was excited, however also oddly quiet about it.

She worried intensely about all of the things that might go wrong and didn’t like talking about her pregnancy. She didn’t want to 'jinx things' as this was her first time being pregnant.

Today, the baby is 12 months old and is one of the happiest babies I’ve ever encountered. In hindsight, my friend's fears were all for nothing. But the truth is that her fearful imaginings made life unnecessarily harder and more stressful for her that what they ever needed to be.

Her expectation that something that could go wrong raised her stress levels considerably. She was fearful of the worst possible outcomes.

In life, our outlook will always be a product of our relationship with expectation. What will or won’t happen, no one knows. And how we deal with the stresses of uncertainty, whether we hope for the best or expect the worst, the idea that our expectations will directly affect an outcome is nothing more than a ridiculous pattern of thinking.

The Art of Expectation Management

It's important that we develop effective strategies for managing our time to balance the conflicting demands of time for study, leisure, earning money and working.

Time management skills are crucial in many aspects of life: from revising for examinations to operating in a steady career. Sometimes it may seem that there isn't enough time to do everything that we need to. This can lead to a build-up of stress.

Once we have identified ways in which we can improve the management of our time, we can begin to adjust our routines and patterns of behavior to reduce any time-related stress in our lives.

The Art of Prioritising Our Time

As Human beings, we possess a unique ability to engage in emotional time travel by mentally fast forwarding through time to envision how we'll feel in future situations.

Emotional time travel isn't without its pitfalls, though! At the most obvious level, people may make inaccurate predictions about how they will feel in a situation because the situation unfolds differently than they expect.

Even if the situation people experience goes on to match the situation they imagined, people face a different psychological situation when they experience an event than when they imagine it. When people fail to understand this in life, they can end up living life on a highly strung 'emotional rollercoaster'.

There's a common approach to stress that most people take.

However, just because most people take it, doesn't mean that it works!

The Average Approach Towards Stress

Often, we can spend too much time and waste too much energy in futile attempts to changing things that we cannot change.

Within itself, this can become one of the leading causes of stress in our lives. The rational evidence for determining what we can change and what we cannot is overwhelming, but our behavior often tries to defy this reason and logic.

Accepting The Things We Cannot Control

The idea of faith is so central to living a dynamic and stress-free life, that it's worth producing it's own video over. I often hear people referring to faith as a mental state or religious belief. However, these definitions aren't particularly accurate.

Webster's dictionary gives several different definitions of faith. The first is "unquestioning belief that does not require proof." Another definition is "a religion or system of religious beliefs."

Those are the ways that most people today think of and use the word "faith" - as something believed without proof or a religion. Webster's also has the definition, "complete trust, confidence, or reliance." This last definition is closer to the way "faith" is used in the Bible, but even that definition is incomplete.

While I don't want to bore you here with a debate about the interpretation of a five letter word, the implications of it in your daily life can be profound when accurately understood.

Stressology: The Fear V's Faith Principle

When we think of our core personal values, we often think about what is important to us in our lives (e.g., security, progress, wisdom, honesty, authenticity, fulfillment). 

Each of us holds numerous values with varying degrees of importance. A particular value may be paramount to one person, but then completely unimportant to another.

Much like company core values, your personal core values are there to guide behaviour and choice. Get them right and you'll be swift and focused in your decision-making, with clear direction.

Get them wrong or leave these values of ours ambiguous, and we'll constantly wonder how we continue to find ourselves going around in circles, and finding ourselves in the midst of so much stress.

Understanding Your Core Needs & Personal Values

Values exist, whether you recognise them or not. Life can be much easier when you acknowledge your values – and when you make plans and decisions that honour them.

By living out your Core Values, not only will you become more successful, you enjoy your success more. You also achieve your outcomes with less effort and less internal conflict.

The transition is a passage or movement from one stage of life or circumstance or place to another.

Life will require you to change. There are seasons of cultural change, seasons of life changes, seasons of health changes, seasons of career changes, etc.

The beginning of a new year is when most of us reflect on the times, seasons of life and experiences of the past year. Life is a series of transitions. We are always in a process of endings and new beginnings.

In fact, an ancient Hebrew King once wrote, "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot…"

A modern day example of this verse might be ending your life as a single adult and beginning new as a married adult, or becoming a caregiver for your aging parent. The reality is change can be difficult.

Seasons are part of life and each comes with its own set of lessons. Every ending is a learning opportunity. You can avoid "going around that same old mountain" by being humble and teachable. Reflect on what you have you learned about yourself? How have you grown?

Never forget that our experiences mold and shape our character in life. So, the question is; how can we successfully transition from one "time" or season to the next?

Stressology: The Fifth Season of Life

Doers make things happen. Talkers get the credit. And when this happens, this can cause us no end of stress throughout the various aspects of our life.

There are always people in the background of a project or enterprise. They worked hard, read a lot, and experimented so things could get done. They let achievements speak for themselves, and sometimes, that works for them. More often than not, though, they don’t get enough credit for the work they did. They don’t draw attention to it; they just do it.

Talkers do the opposite. They're so good at pulling people together, inspiring them and just getting themselves noticed. People who pay attention to talkers think “why would he lie?” or “he believes in himself,” so they believe what the talker says even though there's maybe no evidence of it.

The result is that doers work harder to get their stuff noticed, whereas talkers just talk more. Both sides work (kind of). But what we need people in between.

If we don't understand the difference between talkers and doers, we can find ourselves getting extremely stressed out as a result of our own lack of understanding (and mismanaged expectations).

Stressology: The Talker's V's The Doo'ers

There’s an instructive scene in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when Master Yoda is instructing the young Luke Skywalker how to use the Force for his first time.

He prompts Luke to retrieve a disabled spaceship out of a swamp using only his mind. Luke, of course, assumes this is impossible. Yes, Luke's moved around a few small objects with his mind until now, but a spacecraft - he see's this as an unachievable task.

Yoda patiently explains to Luke that the only difference between the small things and a spaceship is just in his mind. Luke hesitantly agrees to “give it a try.” Yoda famously tells Luke, “No. Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.“

The truth is that when we suggest we are 'trying to do something,' this is nothing more than a mere excuse as to why we haven't bothered, a) fulfilling our commitments, or b) achieving the particular outcome that we hoped for.

Do you understand the difference? You either do something, or you don’t do it. Trying is the same as not doing anything at all. It just makes it easier for us to let ourselves off the hook when we don't get the results that we want.

So, in your life, Where are you trying to improve?

  • Are you trying to get fit or are you getting fit?
  • Are you trying to better your marriage or are bettering your marriage?
  • Are you trying to build a business or are you building a business?

I agree that this may sound like a small distinction, but I can guarantee that it has huge ramifications. Maybe it’s time to quit 'trying' and just do more. Remove the word “try” from your vocabulary. It's a worthless word that accomplishes nothing.

Yoda suggested to Luke Skywalker, the difference may only be in your mind, but it has a dramatic impact on the results of whatever you set out to do. It will also hugely affect your stress levels!

Stressology: The Burden of Trying

A great way to discover what you want in life (and also what’s causing you stress) is by asking yourself a series of profound self-reflection questions.

To find your passion in life, you've got to be willing to become intimately familiar with yourself. You must know what drives you, what inspires you, what excites you, what engages you, what scares you, what you do naturally well, what you pretend to like but don’t, and what lies you're saying to yourself!

As you become more familiar with yourself, you’ll be able to determine what’s most important in the limited time you have in a day, a year, and even throughout your lifetime. On doing this, you can maximize your time doing more of what you love and less of what you don’t love.

Most of us are so busy reacting to events in our current lives that we don’t allow the time to examine what’s not working well and why. We certainly don’t take the time to ask ourselves those deeper, probing questions that unearth our authenticity and buried longings.

Time is NOT money. This is just a metaphor, which unfortunately filters the way many of us view the world. And it might be blinding you to the actions you should be taking in life.

Throughout Western culture, we often associate work with time. It’s customary for employees to be paid by the hour, and professionals to work with 'billable hours', for hotel room rates to be charged based on time occupied, etc.

We tend to think of time this way, whether we’re conscious of it or not. But here’s the truth, time isn’t money. Unlike money, if you spend your time pursuing something that isn’t aligned with your primary life goals, you can’t get this time back. If I give you some of my time, you can’t give me that same time back.

If we believe time is a commodity that we can save, spend or invest, we miss one critical realization: In choosing to do one thing, you’re also choosing NOT to do countless other things.

Unfortunately, time is the one thing that you can never get back.

Stressology: Buying Back Our Time

“Where focus goes, energy flows. And if you don’t take the time to focus on what matters, then you’re living a life of someone else’s design.” - Tony Robbins

Most people blame other people or their circumstances for what they are in life. I don’t believe in circumstances.

In Os Hillman’s book Change Agent, he states: “If we are to impact any nation or change the world, then we will have to affect the seven spheres of influence throughout current society.

These seven spheres of influence are business (the token economy), the government, the media, arts and entertainment, the education system, the family, and religion.

Everyone at some stage in life will find themselves in one of these seven common areas, and what we choose to do in this area (or who we decide to be), will determine the degree of influence (and legacy), that we will ultimately make in the world.

I appreciate that these might seem like some super idea's, however, in this lecture I aim to demonstrate how positive influence can be achievable for everyone.

Stressology: The World System and Social Institutions

So often we look outside of ourselves for answers. On one level this makes sense. If we don’t have an answer, surely someone else must. However, is that really true? Or, do we already have much of the knowledge we need in order to make the decision that is best for us?

I want to reiterate that I am not telling you to stop reading books, going to classes and seminars, buying personal development products, and talking with other people. All of that is critically important, and helps to add to the base of knowledge and experience from which you can pull.

What I am saying is that you have more answers within yourself than you know. First you need to ask the question, then seek the answer, and absolutely be receptive to it.

Look without, but never forget to look within too. You might be surprised at how much you find in there.

Is there anyone occupying a space in your head that they haven't paid any rent for?

If your peace of mind and your achievements in life are dependent upon someone else's actions, that person is in complete control of you, and you have freely given them your power.

The same principle applies to our expectations of money, materialistic possessions and promotions at work, status, rank or our achievements and failures. How many environmental circumstances and situations play a recurring role in determining your emotional wellbeing?

Because we've been conditioned from birth to believe in the myth of an outside-in world, we assume the path back to well-being and joy and peace of mind must be through getting a better job or a better partner or working on becoming a better person.

The irony is that the harder we work on changing ourselves to change the way we feel, the more distant we become from our real self, and the more important it seems to work on all those things on the outside of ourselves. As a result, the more lost and insecure we become.

So, regardless of what 'problem' we think we have, our only real issue is feeling cut off from the truth about 'who we are'. And the moment we reconnect to that fundamental truth, our problems stop being so problematic and we become able to move forward in life to a whole new level.

The formula is simple: your thoughts lead to your feelings, your feelings lead to your actions, and your actions produce your outcomes in life - whether good or bad!

Emotional mastery is the key to living a life that you are 100% in control of.

The capacity to have absolute direct power over what you feel in every single moment (despite what's happening around you) is one of the most important skill sets you can have.

Whatever you feel, you're not feeling it because you have to feel it. You're feeling it because you've chosen to focus on something that you don't want (or don't value). In order to master your emotions and consciously choose the emotions you want to live in, you need to understand the order of your emotions, how they work and also how to read them!

Emotion is created by motion.Where your focus goes, your energy will flow. And where energy flows, whatever you're focusing on grows. In other words, your life is controlled by what you focus on. That's why you need to focus on where you want to go, not on what you fear. When you next find yourself in a state of uncertainty, resist your fear.

Shift your focus toward where you want to go and your actions will take you in that direction. By becoming competent at understanding and mastering your emotions, you can choose to spend more time in positive and resourceful emotional conditions.

From these conditions, you'll become better at making more empowered decisions that will help you reach your greatest potential and in turn to BREAKTHROUGH either stress, or any other unwanted circumstances in your life.

We must first be able to recognise our unhelpful thoughts before we challenge them. Being aware of our primary patterns of unhelpful thinking can help can help us to POLICE our thoughts more efficiently.

Judgment comes in many forms: it can be made directly to a person, to a third party, or even just in the privacy of our thoughts.

It may be about a person, about their actions, about things, or about oneself. In all cases, we need to be aware of what the effects of judgment can be.

Whether positive or negative, judgments of people set up an unequal relationship, which diminishes the person being judged, whether that person is ourselves or another.

This hinders the personal growth of all concerned, as well as creating separation (not to mention bitterness) between people. Judgment is superficial, ignorant, reductive, and is usually the outcome of an emotional reaction to someone else's behaviour. It misses the essence of who a person is an external manifestation of what they either say or do.

Judgment prevents understanding. Ultimately, each judgment says more about the judge than it does about its supposed subject. It goes without saying that being on the receiving end of someone else's judgement, can be extremely uncomfortable and stressful.

The Stress of Unnecessary Judgement

Many of us know that meaningful connections are the foundation of a happy life, but that doesn't necessarily make it any easier to create and sustain fulfilling, mutually beneficial relationships.

It's hard to find people we click with and turn surface level interactions, online or offline, into something deeper.

It's hard to be forgiving, accepting, and understanding when we're dealing with imperfect people, just like us, who may also struggle with these things.

It's challenging to find time to be there for other people when we're running about from place to place, trying to get things done, and possibly stressed out, struggling to make ends meet.

It's also difficult to be fully present when we find ourselves overwhelmed by a swarm of thoughts, fears, and worries about the past and the future. No matter who you are, what you've done in the past, or what time you have available in the present, you can do something, right now, to create more satisfying relationships.
