Welcome to your Five Module Teen Childbirth Class!

This teen childbirth class is designed to bring you peace on this long journey of nine months. During these module we will cover everything you need, or want to know about pregnancy and delivery. Each module is broken down bit by bit, to clarify the foreign medical words, overall development during each trimester, the onset of labor and delivery. By the end of the delivery, the thoughts of what do we do now will come, so we will discuss how you can transition from being helped in the hospital and then riding solo.

Body Mechanics: (Daily Workouts and Movements)


As your baby grows, you may feel more aches and pains in the third trimester. Making slow, careful movements prevents injury and feels better for you. By doing these body mechanics you will be more than prepared, but also energized. You will be making the process of snapping back into shape, after your baby is born a whole lot easier. With the help of Breastfeeding and gentle exercise. We will discuss the topic about Breastfeeding in Module 5.

The Body Mechanics are:

Proper Seat Belt Use:

·         Wear your seat belt-it can save your life and baby’s

·         Position the lap belt below your belly

·         Position the shoulder belt between your breasts

Proper Lifting:

·         Put one foot slightly in front of the other

·         Bend at the knees instead of the waist

·         Keep your back straight to avoid neck strain

·         Do not pick up heavy objects

Proper Standing Posture:

·         Keep your shoulders, back, and hips tucked under

·         Keep your feet about shoulder-width apart and your toes pointed slightly outward

Getting Out of Bed:

·         Roll to your side in one movement without twisting

·         Use your hands to walk yourself up to a sitting position

·         Slowly move your feet to the floor

Getting Up from Low Furniture:

·         Scoot your hips to the edge of the seat

·         Put one foot slightly in front of the other

·         Use your hands to push off and your thigh muscles to support your body as you stand up

·         Keep your back straight and your chin up

Strengthening & Stretching Exercises: Active Mamma Activity Session

These exercises will help you feel stronger and more flexible. They will also help prepare your body for labor. Time to get moving!

·       Wall Squat

Stand with your back against the wall and your feet about 18inches from the wall

Slowly slide your upper body down the wall until you are in a sitting position or slightly higher.

Hold the position for 3 seconds, pressing your back into the wall

Slowly slide back up to standing

Repeat 3-10 times, depending on your comfort level

·       Back Twist Stretch in a Chair

Sit in a straight -backed chair

Hook your right arm over the back of the chair

Reach your left arm across your belly and grasp the seat of the chair

Look over your right shoulder

Hold for 10-15 seconds

Repeat on the opposite side

·       Butterfly Pose Hip Stretch

Sit on the floor with the soles of your feet touching in front of you, and hold on to the tops of your feet

Keeping your back straight, lean forward until you feel a hip stretch

Hold for 10-15 seconds

·       Pelvic Tilt Abdominal Exercise

Lie on your back on the floor with your knees bent (get off your back right away if you start to feel dizzy of short of breath)

Tighten your stomach and butt muscles

Tilt your pelvis upward and flatten your back onto the floor as you exhale

Hold for 5 seconds

Relax the muscles as you inhale, and repeat 3-5 times

·       Kegel Exercises

Strengthen your pelvic -floor muscles for labor. When your bladder is empty, contract the same muscles used to stop the flow of urine for 2-5 seconds. Release and repeat. Do 10 in a row, several times a day. You will be working your pelvic floor to the maximum during labor, so allow the preparation process of these stretching exercises be your guide all the way to the finish line.

In the next section, we will be talking about various labor positions that you can use  during labor.


Labor Positions:


Using a variety of positions to feel more comfortable, will help your labor progress.

Using different positions can:

·         Cause contractions that could speed up labor.

·         Reduce the pain of contractions

·         Help you baby get into a good position

·         Helps you to actively participate in your labor

·         Provide a change of pace

·         Relieve tired, cramped muscles

You can use these positions for the First Stage of Labor:

1.Lunging

2.Hands-and-knees

3.Side-lying

4.Forward leaning

5.Squatting

6.Slow dance

Using Movement: Combining positions with movement can be effective and soothing during labor.

Try these helpful movements:

·         Slow dance with your partner instead of standing still

·         Walk around

·         Do lunges on a step or stable chair

·         In the hands-and-knees position, sway back and forth or rock your pelvis.

·         Use a fitness ball (birth ball) sit and rotate in small circles, or lean over it and sway from side to side.

These positions can be used for the Second Stage of Labor:

1. Side-lying

2.Squatting

3.Forward-leaning

4.Sitting on a birth stool, toilet, or bed. (the gravity helps in the process of delivering the baby).

 


Back Labor:


During labor you might experience back pain in labor, called back labor. To ease the pain, try positions such as squatting, getting on your hands and knees, or lunging.

Back-Labor Techniques:

·         Counter pressure (press on lower back)

·         Applying heat or cold

·         Double-hip squeeze

Long Labor: Not all labors follow a typical pattern. Some women may have a very long early or active phase. On the other, for others it may take longer than expected to push the baby out.

Tips for long labor:

·         Labor for as long as possible at home

·         Rest if you can

·         Change Positions

·         Change the lighting, temperature, and music in the labor room

·         Go into the hall or waiting area for a change of scenery

·         Drink Water

·         Have a backup support person lined up, because your original support people may need a break.

·         Try new comfort techniques, including techniques for back labor.



Providing Support:


Being the partner or support person at a birth is a rewarding experience. It’s also challenging. Your job is to focus on the mother’s needs and be supportive and caring. Because you are aware of her labor preferences, you can also serve as a link between her and the medical staff.
