My name is Mike Murphy. I am a one man band, a podcaster, online educator and I love helping people figure things out. My strength is taking complex things and making them really simple to understand. That is my goal in this class

I use Snapchat to share behind the scenes of me and my process and to teach tips and tricks about podcasting, photography, Photoshop and pretty much all the tools and gear I use. I use Snapchat not only to promote my brand and podcast, but I’m discovering that Snapchat is almost like my accountability coach. Learn the terminology of Snapchat.

  • Photos & Videos Are called Snaps
  • They last 1-10 seconds (without hacking)
  • For Videos, you have up to 10 seconds to record.
  • For Photo Snaps, there is a timer in bottom left corner.
  • You set timer for 1-10 seconds.
  • The photo will disappear in the time you set up to 10 seconds
  • Both video and photo snaps can be embellished with text and graphics that we will go over in Part II.
  • You share snaps as private messages or to a public story that all of your followers can see
  • Add friends and be discovered by others and engage
  • Create a snap by hitting shutter button at bottom of phone
  • For photo: hit once
  • For video: hold down the entire time
  • Private messages disappear as soon as the person you sent it to reads it.
  • Snaps in a story last for 24 hours
  • Snaps in a story only last for 24 hours. If I post a video at noon today, it will disappear at noon tomorrow. Get it?
  • This is hard for many people to understand. Just think about having a conversation with your friend. You do not record your conversations do you? Of course not, they disappear. Snapchat is trying to re-create this.
  • Snapchat is all about you being yourself. Have fun with it.

02:58

Snapchat is for iOS or Android smartphones.

  1. Download the App
  2. Create Account
  3. Create User Name
  4. You will also create a Display Name which is how people will see you (so if your preferred user name is not available, don’t worry, your Display Name can be whatever you want
  5. In Settings:
  6. Tip: Turn on travel mode to save data and battery so Snapchat is not constantly updating.

Snapcodes:

  • The yellow graphic with white ghost is your Snapcode.
  • That is one way people can add you as a friend and your Snapcode will be what you use to promote yourself or your brand.

Profile:

  • Adding a profile pic is optional and is not necessary for the Snapcode to work, but it helps people make a connection with you and I recommend it. It’s a little weird, but do your best and you can always retake as much as you need.
  • To take a profile pic, just tap on your Snapcode and look for the shutter button on bottom.
  • It will take 5 pictures so if you move just a little the gif will move too. I stay still, but feel free to be creative and do whatever feels right.

In non-selfie mode, to adjust exposure, press on screen. Wait for circles and slide up and down to increase or decrease exposure.

In selfie mode, holding down on screen will activate the Lenses, which we discuss in a little bit.

For Photo Snap: Tap Shutter Screen Once

For Video Snap: Hold down shutter button for up to ten seconds or until red circle is full

  1. Tip: Try using the volume down button for the shutter release. This doesn’t always work for me
