It is important to acknowledge two sets of givens related to assistant principal training and development. The first is that the challenge of learning how to be an effective assistant principal is not always within the assistant principal’s control. Many educators work in small districts where there may not be many administrative opportunities. If they are fortunate enough to become an assistant principal, it is unlikely that there is a formal train- ing program in place. The assistant principal is often left to fend for herself, which is why there is a great need for a strong mentor principal. But what about the situation where a new assistant principal is committed to a training process, but doesn’t have a principal who is invested in the assistant principal’s success or professional development?
