2 pages

A brief description of who I am so you can get to know your teacher!

Section 2: Voice Physiology - How The Voice Works
00:25

A brief description of what you will learn in this section on voice physiology.

03:05

A description and explanation of:

* the larynx;

* pharynx;

* trachea:

* epiglottis;

* throat;

* mouth;

* tongue and head.

This lecture also includes diagrams showing where everything is located. Once you understand how it all works together, you will have an excellent background for the purpose of breathing and vocal exercises.

02:54

A description of how the vocal folds produce sound, including photos of real live vocal folds! You will learn how they come together for phonation (singing/speaking etc), and what they are doing at rest. You will also learn where they are placed in the throat. This lecture will help you understand why good vocal technique is important, and behind a sore or inflamed throat (and how to avoid it if you can!)

02:24

Breathing is much more complex than we realise. We do it every day without thinking - but what is really happening when we breathe, and is there a certain way to breath for singing? This lecture will demystify what is taking place in the body when you breathe. A description of how the intercostal muscles, the diaphragm, lungs and ribcage work together to produce breath effective for singing and speaking. Includes diagrams.

Article

Try this simple exercise to see what happens to your breathing when you change your posture. You will be able to see what hinders your breathing and what brings more freedom from breath.

01:12

A summary of what we have learned of voice physiology and breathing anatomy during this section. This will include an overview of the anatomy of throat and head, vocal folds, intercostal muscles, diaphragm, lungs and rib cage.

5 questions

Let's test how well you know your voice anatomy with this simple quiz!

Section 3: The 3 Pillars of the Voice - POSTURE
00:41

There are three pillars that keep your voice strong, confident and healthy. The three pillars of the voice are:

1. Breathing;

2. Posture;

3. Resonance.

In this short lecture will cover what we will learn in the next few lectures based around these pillars.

04:00

Learn about the importance and benefits of good posture by trying this simple test. You will be able to identify any problems and how they are affecting your voice. Make sure you have some space to make some noise as I want you to try singing some notes with tension and without - so you can see and feel the difference.

05:10

Learn the basic principles of the Alexander Technique to help you understand where some functional problems may lie. The Alexander Technique is an excellent technique that will help you rectify these problems to improve both singing and posture. Learn also about the health benefits of this technique - many can be improved and even cured just by correcting your posture!

00:57

In this lecture you will see the difference between good and bad posture. Includes pictures and explanations:

Incorrect posture picture 1: Slumped back tilts pelvis backward;

Incorrect posture picture 2:arched back tilts pelvis forward;

Incorrect posture picture 3: correct - body is buoyant and balanced.

You will be able to compare your posture with these pictures and see how if you need to make any improvements.

04:24

Incorporating the principles of the Alexander Technique, you will be able to realign your body using this simple exercise. Depending on whether your backside or shoulder blades hit the wall first, you will be able to identify what is preventing you from having a buoyant and balanced body and rectify it accordingly.

1 page

A downloadable PDF of "The Wall" posture exercise. At the end of this lecture you will have realigned your posture. You will have become aware of any functional problems preventing you from standing correctly for ease of singing.

00:43

A summary of everything you will have learned once completing this section.

5 questions

Test your knowledge about posture with this quiz!

Section 4: The 3 Pillars of the Voice - BREATHING
00:28

An introduction of what you will learn in this section around breathing, breath support, and some simple exercises to get you breathing correctly!

03:37

There are three ways to breathe:

1. Clavicular;

2. Intercostal;

3. Abdominal.

We will discuss each one, and how they affect your voice. At the end of this lecture you will know which one is correct for good singing technique.

03:14

At the end of this lecture you will be able to perform the book on floor exercise, which will help strengthen the intercostal and abdominal muscles. This is a great reminder of what parts of your body need to be moving and working to create good breath support. Simple yet effective!

01:40

This is premium breath exercise that will make you more aware of what muscles are required for good breath support. As you complete this exercise you will be strengthening the abdominal and intercostal muscles which in turn will help you have more control over your breath and vocal tone.

01:43

A great exercise for helping you extend how long you can control your breath. This exercise allows you to measure how well you are doing and encourages you to extend the length of time you can take before taking a breath. Allows strengthening of muscles as you become more in control of your body.

00:46

Another great exercise for isolating the muscles required for breath support, by 'panting' like a woman in labour! You will become more aware of what muscles are needed for breath control while strengthening them.

1 page

A downloadable sheet with all the breathing exercises. At the end of this lecture you will be able to complete a 5-10 minute breathing warm up!

00:35

An outline of what you will have learned once completing the breathing lectures.

5 questions

Try your "breathing for singing" knowledge with this quick breathing quiz!

Section 5: The 3 Pillars of the Voice - RESONANCE
00:20

An outline of what you will learn in this section on resonance and vibration.

07:18

At the end of this lecture students will understand the difference between resonance and vibration, where it is created in the body, and where the vibrating chambers are located.

04:24

These exercises - The Witch, Teasing Boy and the cat -the "meow" can really help you feel resonance and vibration. A great warm up exercise for correct placement.

03:01

The "Hmmm" is a great exercise for feeling the 'buzz' of the voice in the lips and nose. By performing this exercise you allow the voice to resonate in the face and therefore warm up the resonating chambers ready for singing.

02:14

This is an excellent exercise for warming up the resonating chambers used for singing. It's also a great exercise for helping 'smooth' out register breaks. You will feel you have done a gentle yet effective resonance warm up with "The Glide".

01:00

A summary of what you will have learned once completing the resonance lectures. These are:

* What are resonance and vibration

* Several exercises to warm up the resonating the chambers: The Witch, The Teasing Boy, The Meow and The "Hmmm" sound, and The Glide.

5 questions

Test your knowledge on Pillar 3 - Resonance.

Section 6: VOCAL WARM UP's -YOU ARE READY TO GO!
01:19

An introduction of what you will learn in this section.

01:58

In this lecture I share some simple tips to make the most of your warm up time. Do these things and you will have a good warm up everytime you practice!

03:33

These two exercises are simple yet so effective for warming up the voice and the resonating chambers. By performing them you allow for correct voice placement.

02:40

The "Mmm" sound is great for bringing the voice forward into the lips and face. Now that you have got those resonating chambers working from the previous lectures, this exercise and the ones following will help you to warm up your voice on vowels and other consonants.

02:10

A fun exercise with a focus on the 'ooo' sound - again there is an emphasis on feeling the vibration of the voice in the resonating chambers of the face and mouth.

01:38

Now that you have warmed up your resonating chambers, you can try singing on other vowels to continue warming up the voice. The "Aah" sound is one of the hardest to produce - but you should be able to perform this without pressure or force if you are doing all these exercises in succession. This is because we have placed major focus on exercises that keep the feeling of the voice in the face, nose and mouth.

00:52

In this lecture I will cover some 'extra' tips for warming up efficiently. It's not just about singing notes and standing correctly. Don't forget to be well hydrated and practice in front of a mirror! I'll explain why here!

5 questions

Test your knowledge on important tips to ensure you understand why and how you should do vocal warm ups!

Section 7: YOUR COMPLETE VOCAL WARM UP MP3 KIT PLUS SHEET MUSIC
1 page

A description of everything included in this section and how to use it.

01:18

Many people have emailed asking how to download the mp3's with the new interface change on udemy...hopefully this will help! I am using a Mac, which I believe may be a little different than PC users. If you have a different way of downloading this please let me know. Hope this is helpful!

10:04

This is the first half of your complete vocal warm up. These exercises focus on resonance and breathing.
