  • BIM Technical definitions.

BIM is the generation process and management data during the building life cycle utilizing a dynamic real time modeling software of 3-dimentions buildings.

BIM is the product, an information model that covers all the building geometry, the spatial relationships, the geographic information, and the components quantities and properties.

Graphisoft (Hungary) was the pioneer enterprise which implemented in 1987 the virtual building, with its software ArchiCAD. However, in 2002 when Autodesk bought the Revit Technology Corporation, it began to utilize the BIM concept. Nowadays there are several BIM technology providers for different scopes: Preliminary or Feasibility design, Model BIM Development, BIM Analysis, BIM Documentation and Fabrication, BIM Building Management, BIM Estimates and Quantifications, 4D and 5D BIM Planning, BIM Collaboration Tools.

Autodesk Revit is a modeling tool with two project scopes, Project and Family Creation.

The Family scope allows the parametric element generation.

The parametric element is constructed by rules called parameters within Revit terminology. These will allow the creation of personalized element witch can respond to the project necessities.

The project scope will let us assemble various families to constitute an integral project.

There are 3 File types in Revit in a native format:

RVT – Project Files.

RFA – Family Files.

RTE – Template Files.

A Template File can be a Family or Project File, and it will keep all the characteristics of that file to create a new family or project file.

Autodesk Revit is a modeling program that works like a database. It is formed by Families. Each time we create a Family, an information table family will be generated.

We have Families which geometries will be totally created by the model creation tools, in other words, there will be also other Families from other created categories for view, annotations, symbols, tables, etc.

View Families will allow visualizing elements that fulfill the configuration characteristics.

Annotation Families will allow us to see the information related to other family.

Symbol Families will allow us to add graphic information to families or components according to its existence.

Table Families will allow us to consult the total information present in the database according to category, parameter, filters and group.

Each time an object is created, it affects the database and the complete file resulting in the visualization of the element in all the views where the element contains a reference.

In comparison to other programs, Revit will keep in the file all the integrated families as per the last information version.

The browser tabs help us to move within the information file and we can find them in the view user Interface, they are as follows:

Project Browser – It is similar to the Windows Browser and will allow us to access all the Families in the Project with the following order:

Views / Legends/Schedules/Sheets/Groups/Revit Links.

System Browser – It allows us to configure and manage the project installations systems, and to review its technical characteristics.

Properties – It allows us to consult the last selected element information, either this is a view, a family, an annotation, etc.

Status Bar – It allow us to know the actual execution command.

Legends – It allows us to generate a drawing symbolism to repeat them in various planes.

Schedules – It allows us to generate different quantifications.

View Characteristics Description

The properties are as follow:

Scale – The View Scale

Display – Normal / Medium Ton / No Display

It allows to adjust the visualization view.

Detail – Coarse ( Basic), Medium (Midpoint) yFine (Alto/high)

Determine the detail level, the elements will respond to the detail level.

Parts – Display Parts, Display Original, Display Both

It allows to divide by layers, walls, floors and soffits.

Overrides – It allows modifying the element visibility characteristics by category, filter, type and work sets.

Underlay – It allows to visualize any view in semitransparent tones in the entire project.

Underlay Orientation – It allows to adjust the view orientation in semitransparent tones.

Orientation – It allows to adjust the project view orientation to the local or to the shared one.

Wall Join Display – It allows the join visualization among the walls.

Discipline – It determine if it´s working in Architecture, Structure, any installation or in Coordination, this will affect the visualization of the rest of elements over the Overrides specifications.

View Template – It applies to the view a pre-established configuration from another template and in the chosen fields.

View Name – The way you named the specific view.

Title on Sheet – It allows to know the plane in which is utilized this view.

Crop View – It cuts off the plant image according its characteristics.

View Range – It assign depth, minimum and maximum distance, and the maximum to show.

Depth Clipping – It eliminates the element representations which are visible to the distance or by projection.

Phase Filter. It allows to process the phase which is being used to construct the objects.

Phase – It defines the phase of the work view.

The 3d views creation it is done by creating the 3D View Tab in the View Tab or from home main file, which can be found in the left upper corner, of a 3d View by default it will be call {3D-View}. As first measure, I recommend to change the name, since all the time this view is generated it will substitute the previous version.

The 3d view by default it will show us all the current elements in Revit (excepting annotations), all the properties seen previously are applicable plus the following Section Box, which will allow us to generate a box that cuts in an specific section to visualize only one section of the project.

Nowadays, the 2016 version already counts with a 3d auto-sectioning tool located when selecting and object in the Modify bar, this option generates an additional view, oriented to the selected elements.
