To Read Music, you need to understand Music Staff.

The MUSIC STAFF is a set of 5 horizontal lines on which musical notes are written to indicate pitch and time.

In Western musical notation, the staff, or stave is a set of 5 Horizontal lines & 4 spaces.

Each line and each space represent a different musical pitch

The higher the note is on the staff, the higher the pitch is being played.

To Read Music, you need to understand Treble Clef.

Treble Clef is also sometimes called G Clef because the loop curls around the G line

To read music, you need to understand the Bass Clef.

Bass Clef is also sometimes called F Clef because the F line is in between the 2 dots.

To Read Music, you need to know the 7 Music Names

• Music speaks through the names of the notes. The names of the notes represent pitches.
• A same note has the same pitch but it can be in higher octave or lower octave.

I have good news for you. You don't need to learn a lot of names.

There are only 7 names to the music notes. Isn't this great? It is even easier than the English language.

You don't even need to know 26 alphabets.

You only need to know 7 names which correspond to the 7 notes.

The 7 notes are named after the first seven letters of the alphabet.

A - B - C - D - E - F - G

After G, it repeats and goes back to A - B - C …..etc

There is no H, I J….etc.

If you know your alphabets, then you already know ONE important thing about Music note-names. They follow the letters of the alphabets.

You need to learn ONLY 7 Alphabets: A B C D E F G

This is all you need to learn - just master these 7 letters of the Alphabet.

That's how easy it is.

Get this into your head so that you can overcome all FEAR of reading music notes.

To Read Music, recognize the names of the lines & spaces in Treble Clef:

Each line and each space has a musical name or music note assigned to them.

They tell us which note to play in our instrument and how long to play it.

This course is about "Reading Music Notes", so we will not study the duration value of notes which are related to timing.

Treble Clef Notes:

The 5 Lines have these names:

Line 1 - E

Line 2 - G

Line 3 - B

Line 4 - D

Line 5 - F

The 5 spaces have these names:

Space 1 - F

Space 2 - A

Space 3 - C

Space 4 - E

To Read Music, you need to recognize the names of the lines & spaces in Bass Clef:

The Bass Clef also has 5 lines and 5 spaces.

This is good news as you can see there is a distinct pattern in music. You need to recognize patterns. In that way, you will find it very easy to READ Notes.

The 5 Lines in Bass Clef have these names:

Line 1 - G

Line 2 - B

Line 3 - D

Line 4 - F

Line 5 - A

The 5 spaces in Bass Clef have these names:

Space 1 - G

Space 2 - E

Space 3 - C

Space 4 - A

If we combine the Treble Clef & Bass Clef together, we have the entire Grand Staff.

How many lines are there on the Grand starff?

There are 11 lines.

If we read music like this, it is very clumsy

Notice how the middle line - C - separates the Treble Clef & Bass Clef

The C line in the Grand Staff is actually the Middle C.

This is the center point of orientation for both Treble Clef & Bass Clef.

I am sure you have heard a lot about people saying that you need to find the Middle C. That is where Middle C.

The Middle C line there separates the Treble Clef and the Bass Clef, and this is what you often see in sheet music.

Read Music Fast: Know your Alphabets

Look at the alphabet notes: C D E F G A B

• When notes ascend, alphabets go forward.
• As notes go 'higher', the letter names follow the pattern of the alphabet.

Once you reach the letter G, the pattern returns to Letter A and continues on in this pattern.

When notes descend, alphabets move BACKWARDS.

So as notes go lower down, the letter names follow the pattern of the alphabet BACKWARDS.

Once you read the letter A, the pattern returns to letter G and continues on.

1. Read the notes as ascending order starting at the very left:

2. If we reverse this and read the notes starting on the right in descending order starting at the G note in Treble Clef.

They correspond to E G B D F

For the SPACES: To help you retain the letters in your memory, you can use this word cue: FACE

It spells the word FACE.

So that is easy to remember.

In this course, I purposely show you the traditional method of how students are taught when they read music.

The traditional method works but it is SLOW going because every time you try to identify the note, you need to read out the complete sentence.
