After completing this chapter you will be able to emulate a very convincing Angus Young and will have an idea of how he simplifies his open chord shapes to create truly powerful, yet melodic and memorable riffs.
Here you will use A minor pentatonic scale and A dorian to solo over the ACDC Style track. Time to get those fingers moving right from the start of the course and attempt some double stop bends along the way!
A breakdown of the chords for the ACDC classic "Highway to Hell".
After completing this chapter you will have a firm grasp of several major and minor chords in open positions and up and down the guitar neck. An understanding of using triad shapes and scales to form very pleasing melodies will also be achieved.
In this section you will use more single note lines, scalar patterns and chord inversions (triads of major and minor chords) to create a twin guitar part.
A quick study of the Kings of Leon's "Sex on Fire", looking at both guitar parts. both the backing and the awesome howling lead part.
An awesome example of the style of Jimmy Page using E pentatonic blues scale to create a pushy and meaty blues riff similar to the songs "The Ocean" or "Black Dog". Also, some lovely big jangly chords and a ripping solo!
A blast of a solo that covers the whole fretboard, winding around minor pentatonic, major pentatonic and blues scales, time tested licks here and some nice bends, hammer ons and pull offs to master!
One of Jimmy Page's coolest riffs, though there are so many to choose from! Here we have a look at "The Ocean"....
Guitar 1 of this dual guitar study. A staple of the Thin Lizzy sound. Guitarists Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, John Sykes and many more created some beautiful soaring harmonies in the same way as i have here. We have a bluesy riff using minor and dorian scales, into a single note harmony, some crushing power chords and a super powerful blues lick as a finale!
Guitar 2 here plays the higher harmony and lower harmony respectfully creating a sound that can only be described as spine tingling, the sense of satisfaction when playing the harmony guitar is unparalleled! Some of this track is quite fast and intricate and may require lots of practise, a metronome is recommended.
A favourite of mine from the "Johnny the Fox" album, a stacato climbing minor riff followed by pure power chord fun!
The Beatles were incredible song writers and this was a tricky song to write, its works on a happy descending melody over major/suspended 4th chords based on two Beatles songs and then moves into a minor section with a chromatic run down.
Lovely melodies here but again pretty tricky, so take time and build up speed. Not so much scales here as following the chord patterns with inversions.
A study of the Beatles classic "Help". A full on chord strummer with some useful patterns and barre chords to learn!
Groovy 12 bar blues with the laid back grooves of Keith Richards, shimmering suspended chords and some cool bluesy riffs combining major/minor sounds. Some new chord techniques here that will prove invaluable!
Cool bluesy solo in the Stones style, some super unison bends here creating an almost country rock sound.
"Gimme Shelter", a brilliant Stones track, played in open tuning originally but reworked here to play in standard tuning.
Crushing bluesy power chord riffs here featuring the b5 note of the blues scale, or "el diabolous en musica" as its was once called! The tritone creates a feeling of unease and a need to resolve, hence it works well for the heavier rock songs! ...... Also some lovely slippery pentatonic riffs here and some howling unison bends.
An epic solo here in the style of the great Tony Iommi, natural minor scale is mixed up with the blues scale to recreate the style and build atmosphere into the lead guitar. One of my favourites here!
"Behind the Wall of Sleep", this track has everything Sabbath were great for, heavy blues, power chords, awesome riffs and of course the b5 note!
