Description

Ethical behavior goes beyond simply knowing the difference between right and wrong; it is doing what is right. The purpose of promoting ethical investigation practices is to establish and promote clearly defined standards of conduct for investigators.  These standards assist in protecting the investigator and the public.

Target Student:

  • Law Enforcement
  • Medicolegal Investigators
  • Private / Legal Investigators

There are five areas, or standards, of ethical behavior that every investigator must adhere to.

Ethical behavior means adhering to the following 5 standards:

  1. Confidentiality
  2. Honesty
  3. Ethical investigation practices
  4. Avoiding conflicts of interest
  5. Supporting equal rights

Attributes of a Successful Investigator

  • Self Confidence-
    • Optimism and assertiveness play a part in investigations. This can include assertiveness of an individual who depends on his or her knowledge of how to handle a difficult situation.
  • Integrity-
    • Falsified facts and incomplete information can spell disaster for an investigator. It is essential that the investigators double check all facts and do not misrepresent themselves to others.
    • A reputation for honesty and integrity can keep you out of trouble.

At the end of this 1 hour training course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define ethical behavior
  2. List and describe the five standards of ethical conduct.
  3. List and describe the two attributes of a successful investigator
