Section 2: Helpful Tips For The Course
01:54

Get the most from this photography class. Take just a moment to learn about Udemy, how to control the pace of training, get technical support, ask me questions (I love answering questions so please don't be shy), and get the most from this course. Let's get started.

01:09

Learn a five step photography method that works and that the entire course is based on. It works every time; is simple; and easy to remember, repeat, and enjoy. I know because I use it in my photography and it is flexible, effective, and simple. If you find great light, get great poses, and have fun doing it what would happen to your images? It transformed the way I express myself behind the lens, and if you master it, it could make you a more versatile photographer no matter what your photography discipline is.

02:20

Get a camera at a steep discount from Canon. Do this, and you may save 10 x what you paid for this course. It takes patience and a watchful eye, but if you signup at the right spot and wait for holiday deals, you can land a great camera at a fantastic price.

Section 3: Creative Outdoor Family Portraits
08:00

Learn the tips, keys, and secrets to pro family portraits as you go behind the scenes of an outdoor family photo session in Hawaii. Part 1 where we talk about gear, setup, lights, and build a picture one light at a time. Ring light, then beauty dish, then we get to work.

03:19

The second lesson from our outdoor Hawaii photoshoot where I show you how I talk to, work with, and run a family photoshoot. Lots of ideas you can use on your next shoot.

01:22

To be able to pose you need these foundational skills. This intro will explain and get you started with these powerful projects that will give you the skills you need to pose knockout images.

05:52

Sounds strange, but every good portrait photographer is a landscape photographer first and a portrait photographer (if you work outside). In this lesson I'll show you how to pick a great background. You'll be able to pick great backgrounds after you have finished this project. This could be the most important skill in getting hot outdoor portraits.

Article

In response to this project a student posted a WONDERFUL image in the discussion section (check it out in the discussions section for a wonderful example of how to do all these projects well in one picture). One thing I realized I failed to mention in this lesson (that is a fine point, but still worth discussing) is to keep the horizon transition (usually ground to sky line) away from the head, it's best if that line doesn't pass through the head. It just keeps the attention more on the head and less on that horizon. Usually 2/3 up the image is a good spot for the horizon as a general rule as long as that isn't where your subjects head is. I normally will have subjects head a bit above the horizon when possible.

04:31

Have you ever seen a picture with awful, fake smiles? Learn how to banish lame smiles from your pictures. In this project I'll show you how and get you started.

03:07

Without angles your pictures will be boring. Let me show you how to quickly look for and build great angles from the ground up. Your pictures will start to come alive after this project. Let me get you started.

02:47

Posing knockout images starts at the feet. Sound strange? Let me show you as you get started moving the happy feet of your subjects and creating breathtaking poses.

02:18

The twist... twister... it's not just a game anymore, it's also a key component to a good pose. Let me show you what I mean as you get started adding a more dynamic feel to your portraits by adding twists.

02:49

Have you ever wondered why photographers are always saying, "chin down"? It's to block a bit of the neck, the bottom of the chin, and change the angle of the nose. See what I'm talking about as you get started with this project that will start you moving head positions - a key in any good pose.

01:34

Most photographers move their camera to their subjects, good photographers move their subjects to their cameras. Watch as I explain and demonstrate how to avoid reversing directions while you do this. Get started moving your subjects wherever you want them - you'll start to eliminate things like poles, fences, and parked cars in your pictures when you do this. Watch as I explain.

01:39

Avoid squinting, harsh shadows, and shiny faces by picking better light. Learn how here as you watch me pick good light and give you a simple project to reinforce this lesson.

03:57
No, I'm not losing my mind... I'm talking to another Jon (Udemy Student) as I address real Udemy feedback. Watch this short, funny video to see what's going on behind the scenes of my life as an instructor.
