  • You may add a brief bio about your business (optional)

I look forward to getting to know each of you better. Again, welcome to the course!

Section 2: How to Navigate the App
06:10

This lecture contains a tutorial for navigating the IOS app with ease.

Download the App and Get Started

First, download the app from you the App Store if you are using IOS. Next, login with your Twitter credentials, or create new account info if you do not have a Twitter account. If you are using Periscope for business, I highly recommend adding a Twitter account. If you can, have both your Twitter and Periscope handles the same.

Customize Your Profile

Through the PROFILE screen you can change your photo, name, and add a brief bio or description. Consider adding hashtags and your website URL to this area as well.

Configure Your Settings

Under your PROFILE you will find a settings menu. This is where you can select your preferred language, auto-save your broadcasts to your camera roll on your mobile device, and turn on notifications to be alerted when someone new follows you.

Differences Between IOS and Android App

They are very similar, however the layout of the icons tend to be a bit different on each.IOS seems to be leading the way in terms of app updates, although I suspect that each app will be adding updates regularly, so be sure to check for updates often.

Another difference is you swipe right to share a broadcast with your followers on IOS, and swipe up to share on Android.

Using the Search Feature

The search feature in Periscope operates the same as Twitter. You can search by relevant keywords with the use of hashtags, and for people and businesses by name.

Section 3: Creating a Broadcast
02:56

Everything you need to know to get started with Periscope so you can be broadcasting like a pro in no time!

How Long Should a Scope Be?

Scopes vary in length depending on the topic and the broadcaster. A good rule of thumb for a business broadcast delivering quality content is approx. 9-12 minutes.

How Often Should I Broadcast?

Once or twice per day is usually a good start. Too many scopes per day could result in your viewers turning off notifications from you. In the beginning, it’s OK to start with once or twice per week until you gain confidence and get more comfortable. Keep in mind, the more you scope, the faster your following will grow.

How Long Will My Scopes be Available?

Currently only 24 hours. It’s a good idea to configure your settings to auto-save your broadcasts to your camera roll so you can repurpose them on your website/blog or YouTube.

04:02

The title should be clever and well thought out. It should leave the viewer wanting to learn more and ready to watch. Consider adding emoji’s to the title to draw attention, and use hashtags with relevant keywords so your scopes can be easily found in search results.

01:58

If scoping for business, it’s important that you broadcast from an area that is clear of clutter and professional looking. Avoid messy work-spaces, and if possible, incorporate your brand into the backdrop of your videos. Switch up your location from time to time to keep things fresh and interesting.

02:46

How to set an interesting thumbnail photo to attract more viewers to your live Periscope broadcast.Wherever the forward facing camera is pointing when you select the red "record broadcast" button will set the thumbnail photo for your broadcast.

01:35

Common Broadcasting Mistakes to Avoid as a Newbie:

  • Don’t use simple titles of one or two words. Consider longer titles with the use of emoji’s to draw attention and relevant keywords with hashtags to rank in search results.
  • Be conscious of where your camera is pointing when you press the red ‘Start Broadcast’ button. This will set the thumbnail photo for your scope. It should be relevant and clear to see. Hold steady to avoid blurred objects.
  • Avoid “dead air” time. Start speaking right away, even if nobody is on your live scope. Think about the replay!
  • Auto-save your broadcasts to your camera roll. Currently, viewers can only watch your broadcasts for 24 hours, so if you want to repurpose your broadcasts for YouTube or your blog, configure your settings to auto-save your scopes.
  • Take caution with the ‘Share Location’ feature. Many strangers will be watching your scopes and you don’t want everyone to know exactly where you live or work.

Section 4: Broadcasting Tips and Tricks
02:09

It’s fine to write a script to rehearse what you are going to cover in your scope, but avoid reading your script live on your broadcast. Instead, make a few notes with bullet points to keep near you while you are scoping to keep you on track. It’s also a good idea to rehearse your introduction a few times before you begin your broadcast.

01:30

Start speaking as soon as your broadcast begins, whether you have live viewers watching or not. Think about the replay! Many viewers will watch the replay at a later time, so it’s important to start speaking right away when you begin the broadcast.

00:50

Viewers love to be acknowledged on Periscope, so engagement is key. Once you begin your broadcast and recite your intro, take a couple minutes to interact with your viewers while they are joining your scope. Consider asking who is new to your broadcasts, where everyone is from, and take a moment to answer any questions or comments that come in.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when dealing with Trolls:

  • Don’t feed into their game. They are trying to get a rise out of you, so feeding into their negativity and getting roused up is only going to feed the fire.
  • If you can, try to ignore their comments during the broadcast, and go back and block them during the replay. However, if you feel as though you should block them from the current broadcast because they are using vulgar language and are taking away from your scope, you can easily block them by clicking on their comment and then selecting ‘block user.’
  • Don’t let them kill your confidence. Brush it off and keep going. It may catch you off guard the first time this happens, and that’s why I recommend having a few notes next to you to get you back on track.
01:31

How to when to ask for hearts on your broadcast. In Periscope world, hearts are equivalent to “likes” and will rank you higher as a Scoper. There are several ways in which broadcasters can get more hearts.

Asking for shares

Just like asking for hearts, it’s important that you ask for shares in the right manner. Let viewers know what you are going to be scoping about, build excitement around it, then ask them to share your broadcast with their followers if they think the information will be of value to their audience.

Converting viewers to followers

After you’ve delivered valuable content, let your viewers know that if they enjoyed your scope, they can easily follow you by clicking on the number of viewers in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and then selecting the “follow” option.

00:30

About halfway through your broadcast, take a moment to repeat who you are and what you are sharing on the broadcast. This will keep any new viewers informed and excited for what’s to come.

Article

It takes a lot of confidence to record a live broadcast. There’s no edit option so there seems to be more pressure around getting it right the first time.

Consider starting simple with a few shorter scopes to build your confidence, and over time you will gain confidence and grow more and more comfortable with each broadcast.

Section 5: Clever Ways to Use Periscope for Business
2 pages

A worksheet to help you find your ideal avatar, or client, so you can seek out the proper viewers for your broadcasts.

01:42

In any business, it’s a good idea to have an elevator pitch. What is an elevator pitch? A brief statement that defines who you are, what you have to offer, who you can help and why. It should be easy to recite and flow eloquently and confidently off your tongue, so practice until it does. Once you’ve crafted an elevator pitch that you are confident with, this can easily become the introduction for your scopes.

03:19

There are many ways for you to use Periscope in your own business, such as: Live Q&A Sessions, Tip of the Day/Week, Product Launches, Breaking News and Announcements, Behind-the-Scenes Look, Loyalty Promotions, Products & Giveaways, and Private Scopes/Team Meetings.

00:46
Consider creating a custom hashtag that you use each time you broadcast. Add it into your bio on both Twitter and Periscope, and encourage your followers to use your custom hashtag when leaving comments on Twitter.
01:16

If you're scoping for business, always end with a strong call-to-action. The goal here is to convert your viewers and followers to customers, so end with a call-to- action that will lead viewers to your website, sales page, blog, mailing list, etc., where they can easily find your products and services.

00:59

You'll want to configure your settings to auto-save your broadcasts to the camera roll of your mobile device. This way you can use them later by sharing on social media, adding to your blog, sending out in a newsletter, or on your YouTube channel.

Section 6: Conclusion
7 pages

Frequently asked questions about Periscope and how to use the mobile app in your business.

01:06

Who should you follow on Periscope? Simple. Anyone who you admire in your field, such as: business mentors, clients, and even your competitors. Who do you follow on Twitter? They will show up as suggested follows in the Periscope app on your Leaderboard screen. That's usually a good place to start.
