Course Description

Welcome to "Turning your Passions into Paychecks"

I designed this course to help you articulate your career goals and best compete for internships or jobs that blend financial rewards with social impact and environmental stewardship. This course is designed to democratize access to top career advice. This means I want to make top career advice accessible to professionals who can't afford to hire a good career coach, and to students whose career center staff might not be well-versed in 21st Century impact internships and jobs available beyond on-campus recruiting programs.

This course is a blend of my career coaching experience at Brown University and at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, as well as of the content development with my co-founder, Dr. Mark Albion (Faculty Founder of Net Impact) through our B Corps, More Than Money Careers:

  • Week 1 and 2 of this course will help you GET CLEAR by articulating your own unique motivated skills, work/life priorities, as well as prioritizing which passions you want to turn into paychecks.
  • Week 3 and 4 will focus on helping you GET CONNECTED to the most relevant resources and contacts based on the unique goals and passions you have chosen to prioritize through the GET CLEAR portion of this course.
  • Week 5 and 6 will focus on helping you GET HIRED by gaining access to 21st Century job searching advice as well as insights from cognitive neuroscience to help you tailor your resume to fit each job description, and how to convert applications into interviews and interviews into offers.

Throughout this course, you will be required to complete deliverables and post them on the discussion board so you can receive feedback and ideas on how you can make the process of turning your passions into paychecks faster and easier.

Please use the discussion area to post any questions or suggestions you might have!

  • Be willing to let go of your pre-conceived notion that impact jobs mean lower salaries
  • Be ready to be paired up with a buddy that will keep you (and you will keep) accountable for the duration of the course

What am I going to get from this course?

  • Articulate your passions, and clarify how to align career moves, time investments, and donations with your current passions
  • Understand how your current skills, work/life preferences, and passions make you the best fit for specific jobs (and not for others).
  • Refine your networking pitch and job search strategy to identify and connect with high alignment mentors and sponsored
  • Use twitter, LinkedIn groups and other social media sites to identify internships and jobs before they become available

3 questions

Let's see how up to date you are about 21st Century Hiring Techniques.

In this lesson, we will combine instructional videos and practical exercises to help you get clear about your own mental biases and expand your mental map of career possibilities that merge meaning and money in fields such as CSR, international development, impact investment, and environmental sustainability.

Learn more about currently available career options in the private, nonprofit, and government sectors that will allow you to merge meaning and money in your career.

This lesson will help you articulate which career is a better fit for your current skills, work/life priorities, and passions/industry interests is difficult. Our triple fit framework is designed to help you clarify your priorities so you can articulate and reach your career goals faster.

Different degrees focus on different areas of the triple fit. Find out how your education helped you become fluent at certain levels of the triple fit so that you can understand which triple levels will likely be more comfortable or challenging for you to clarify.

This lecture will help you articulate your motivated skills so you can avoid "becoming good at something you don't like to do."

DELIVERABLE - Instructions:

  • Highlight two or three key thoughts you have about skills and their correspondence with career paths.
  • Describe two or three things you will be doing differently moving forward as a result of this new knowledge.

Sample Deliverable:

Maria’s Deliverable - Two things I have realized:

  • I have been spending a lot of time becoming good at many things, hoping that at some point it would all make sense. Finding job titles that have more of the things I know and actually like to do is really helpful.
  • All this is so new, I can't quite see which sector and job titles would be a better fit for me.

Two ways learning this will change my behavior:

  • I now realize that expanding my skill set might not be as effective as I previously believed. I will make a concerted effort to analyze different jobs based on how they overlap with what I like to do.
  • There are many job titles I hadn't heard of, I need ways to explore what skills they actually require in order to determine which path might be a better fit for my next move.

Please also use the discussion area to post any questions or suggestions you might have!

Work/Life priorities change as we move through life. At the start of your career, you might have been most important to you might have been to work for a prestigious organization (e.g. Google, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Teach for America, Department of Defense). It might also be that your career goals are centered around making as much money as possible to pay off your student loans. You might also be thinking about choosing a path that will allow you to have a more flexible work schedule if you have children or relatives that might need more attention. All these priorities are likely to lead to tradeoffs, and this lecture will help you understand how your priorities might make you a better fit for different culture and sectors.

This lecture will help you clarify your passions and help you decide how you will invest in your passions, as well as which of your passions you will center your next career move on.

Please use the discussion area to post any questions or suggestions you might have!

Test your new found knowledge about your passion-driven career!

Now that you have clarified your triple fit, it is time to turn these priorities into a pitch that will make you memorable, as well as help you connect with the mentors and sponsors that best align with your goals.

Section 2: GET CONNECTED - Find your Tribe and Tap into the Hidden Job Market

How to identify contacts, as well as researching salary and employment trends based on your triple fit results.

How to join the most relevant LinkedIn groups (those buried among the 1.6M LinkedIn groups), as well as email potential mentors via LinkedIn groups (no email address needed).

How to mine twitter @handles and #hashtags to uncover internships and jobs before they become available on job boards.

Section 3: GET HIRED - The Mechanics of Securing Meaningful Work

It is easy to get tripped up about salary questions during a job or internship search. Whether an employer asks for your salary history during the application process, asks you about your salary expectations during your interview or on the way out after your interview, you need to be prepared to confidently dodge these curved ball throughout the hiring process.

From previous videos, you already know that 80% of job opportunities are never advertised, and are instead filled through networking and social media channels such as twitter and LinkedIn groups.

This lesson will help you re-assess your qualifications based on each job or internship posting you uncover.

This lesson will also help you use technology to read the hiring manager's mind and write tailored resumes that increase your chances to convert applications into interviews.

Being invited for an interview is great news, as it means that the employer has decided from your resume and cover letter that you meet the criteria for the position.
