Section 1: Television

It sounds obvious but when you front the media you must come across as confident and professional. Part of that is what you say, how you say it and what you look like.

It is key that if the situation  relates to a death or major injuries, then you must come across as sympathetic and caring. Knowing what tone to use with your voice is also very important.

The little red light may appear innocuous but it can prove your downfall if you do not understand what it means.


One of the most important things to remember when you are fronting the media is to be accurate. You must get your facts right. Detail is key. And that means that if you do make a mistake, simply correct yourself.


If a reporter is chasing someone down a street and asking them questions, this can look bad enough, But if the person says "No comment" it simply adds more fuel to the fire.

Section 2: Television (Part two)

When you are being interviewed on camera for a television news story, it is important that you do not talk in long convoluted sentences.


In this video you will learn the technique known as "Bridging" This will help you change direction when you are being interviewed by the media.


Some times a person will offer controversial information to the  reporter. If you are happy for the reporter to know about the  information, then that's fine, but if not then do not offer it up.


Put simply, make sure that people understand what you are saying.


Often a person that is being interviewed on camera will bring notes with them.This is a great idea.

Section 3: Print

In this video you will learn about demographics. In other words, understanding the audience you are speaking to and to THAT audience.


It is key that you understand when the interview with a print reporter has started.


Again preparation is key for a print interview.


Make sure you are not rushed for your print interview. There is nothing worse than being flustered.

Section 4: Radio

You will quickly fine out that being sarcastic in any for of the media will work against you.


It is always best to go into a radio studio for a media interview.


It is far better to take notes with you during a radio interview so that you can use them if you are not sure of some specific facts.


If you speak with a smile in your voice it will come across to the audience. Conversely if you are serious and unhappy, the audience will pick up on this as well.


It is so important that you get your message across when given an opportunity to speak on radio.

And so you need to speak clearly and make sure you do not garble your message.


If you are invited into a studio for a radio interview, you may find yourself speaking with callers, who have rung in.


Being personable when you are in a radio studio is very important.

And so using the reporters name is one way of building confidence.


lease please never say anything a studio that you would not want reported. Sometimes the host accidentally leave  the microphone on.

Section 5: It's all about experience

If there is one thing that is a no no it's bagging the opposition. It generally backfires badly.


Building relationships with reporters is so important. You should put time and effort into this task.


A pet hate of reporters is heir talent failing to get to the point. Waffling on with no substance is simply note good enough.


Another no no when it comes to interviews. Getting angry will reflect badly on you.


Keeping an eye on what others do well and poorly will help you in your quest to be an outstanding media performer.


When you speak off the record it means you are telling the reporter stuff that could be controversial. Only do it when you trust the reporter.


Every reporter wants to get the exclusive. When they do they look good in their bosses eyes.

Section 6: How do you look?

It goes without saying .. you must always look your best when appearing in front of the media.


When ever you are being interviewed on camera it is best to stand in the one place .. but move your head around and use your arms and hands to make a point.


There are some clothes that look better on camera than others. Anything that stands out will prove a distraction from what you are saying.


If you are being interviewed on camera, there are certain areas to look. One thing is for sure, never look down the barrel of the camera.
