Key number 2 - Specify present situation.Part of successful goal setting and achievement is not only knowing where you want to get to but also knowing where are currently. This is really important in determining whether or not a goal is realistic or not. You will hear a lot of personal development folk yelling  ‘anything is possible’ that you can do anything if you put your mind to it etc. etc. And I tend to agree with that. However a lot of those guys miss the point a little.

Specify your outcome. The simple fact of the matter is, if you don’t know where you are going, you are unlikely to arrive there. You have heard it said in many different ways before I am sure, and it is so true, imagine a game of soccer with no goals, archery without a target. Imagine getting in a car and just driving, with no destination or map and see how you get on. The point is, that in order to move forward you must have a goal to achieve and you need to be able to specify that goal clearly and concisely. In this lecture we take a look at how we might do that.

Ok, so onto the 4th key, - Specify Evidence Procedure so what does that mean? Well the question that you will want to be asking yourself and indeed any client that you are working with. ‘How will I know that I am achieving my goal or have achieved my goal” what evidence will there be along the way, and when you have achieved your goal that will make it absolutely undeniable. Lets take a look.

For you to be successful in achieving it the outcome or goal must be congruent with your entire system. In NLP when we talk about congruency, we are referring to the physiology that accompanies our externalized dreams or goals. So lets discover what that means.

In NLP we ask ‘Is your goal self-initiated or self-maintained'. This is so very important when you are seeing goals and I confess that I have made a number of mistakes around this key over the years and have kicked myself each time for doing it. The point is that you must take full and complete ownership of your goal. And that means that for a goal to be truly achievable and viable, it must be initiated by you, so it must be YOUR goal and not someone else’s.

Only this time, we are approaching the outcome or goal in the context of meaning. The next key in the list of keys to an achievable outcome is to identify the resources that are needed. There are many different types of resources, for example time, money, material things like equipment, software, machinery etc. and there are less tangible items as well such as a positive attitude, confidence, creativity etc. So to give your goal the best chance of success this key is crucial if you want to really get things going in the right direction.

Ecology is the study of consequences. It links also to the cause and effect equation and responsibility.Whether you like it or not, everything you do, affects something else, physically mentally spiritually, energetically. And The study of ecology gets you to consider the consequences of the pursuit of your goal and its ultimate achievement.

Something  that is going to make sure that you cruise towards success in achieving your goal is if your entire system is working in harmony. If there is congruence if your physiology matches your words and behaviors etc.

As an NLP Practitioner it is this process that you will be using when working with others.

When we are learning any new skill or topic there are a number of stages that we go through before we can say that we are fully competent. You have probably heard the phrase practice makes perfect and that is of course true. Ask yourself is your goal really specific?  For example, If I was going to take on your goal, if I was to go and achieve it for you, would I know precisely what it is you want with the way you are describing it to yourself. Would you be able to outsource your goal to me, leave it, forget about it and wait for me to deliver it up exactly as you want it? Well maybe although my experience tells me probably not. So let’s see why in this lecture.

In this lecture, we are going to look at how to take a top-level goal and turn it into something really specific and in doing so we will further increase our chances of completing the goal successfully. However it can server as a useful tool for boosting motivation and you might find it interesting to see how the whole thing unfolds. And in fact I have a slightly different take on the measurement of your goals that is much more cause oriented so let’s take a look.

This lecture follows on from the previous session on control variables sub goals. As we have already determined. To reach a goal there are a lot of things that need to come together before that system delivers up the result. The completed goal. And often times… we are told that we need to break a big goal down into smaller component parts. However, as you are about to find out, many of these sub goals, might not be sub goals at all and could be individual goals that run concurrently with others.

And so far, we have spoken about a number of things that you can do to keep a track of your goal and to measure how effective your efforts are. And what I want to share with you now Is a bit of a stretch for most people, and I truly believe it is how you manifest your goals in the quickest way possible. In this session, we are going to look at a common ‘issue’ that people say they have when working with goals and that is that simply get afraid when it comes to taking action and again, that doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with someone because they feel that way, it simply means that they are a human being. However, fear of any kind is going to hold you back and prevent you from realizing your potential. So what can you do about it. Let’s take a look.

The very best person to be accountable to is yourself. To be at cause for everything that happens in your life. AND there is no harm especially in the early days of putting yourself out there and making yourself accountable to other people. In essence this is why coaching works so well… or at least one of the reasons it does. A coach will hold you accountable for the things you state you are going to do and will provide encouragement along the way as well. Of course they can’t actually do the work for you though and so at the end of the day it’s down to you. Now if you are like a fair amount of people out there. That sentence… it’s all down to you… can be a bit scary. And again that’s normal, remember if you are like most folk out there, you probably haven't been looking at things through this lens or at least haven't for a while. In this lecture, we are going to look into the concept that a SMART goal needs to be timed. That is that there needs to be a definite time for completion or achievement of that goal. And I promise you there will be no more sporting analogies. So lest get into it.

In this lecture, we are going to go look into a little more detail the time frame that you set for your goal and why it is so important. Now to recap on this, it you don’t know where you are going you are to go to get there and that includes the by when date. So what I would like to show you is the importance of how you define the due date for your goal. And the distinction between a fixed date and a by then date.

In this section, I am going to be showing you the Presuppositions of NLP. Now you may remember when we were discussing what NLP is I referred to it as an attitude of curiosity. And that is true, and I think it’s fair to say that as an NLP practitioner attitude is an important part of being successful in your work. If you remember we went through the ‘What is NLP really’ lecture earlier in the course well that opinion of what NLP is really comes from these Presuppositions. There are much deeper more philosophical explanations of what NLP is all about really. These are beliefs for the most part that if you take on board will assets you in your life and assist you in becoming a great NLP Practitioner.

I like to say that one of the things we all have in common is our uniqueness. And it’s true, we may share a lot of similarities with the people that we meet, we may well get bunched into groups of people and get labeled as British, European, White black, Asian. And a whole load of other labels as well. But the fact of the matter is.  You are a one off, and there is no one the same as you anywhere on the planet. So lets look a little deeper into this whole idea of respecting the other persons model of the world.

Next up, number 2 Behavior and change are to be evaluated in terms of context and ecology. As NLP Practitioners, we need to be careful when we are working with our clients that they don’t inadvertently cause themselves additional issues. So lets take a look at how we do that.

The next presupposition states that Resistance in a client is a lack of rapport, In NLP we say, there are no resistant clients, only inflexible communicators. So What do we mean by that.? Well, to be a really effective communicator involves, assuming responsibility for the communication. And by that, I mean 100% responsibility for the communication, how it is received, how well it flows, and  whether or not it reaches the goal of that communication.

In this lecture  I am going to offer my own addendum to this presupposition which is how I have been able to accept this presupposition and work with it. As I confess it is the one aspect of NLP that I have wrestled with over the years. So as I say some people may find this a little tough to get their head around and the thing is this, behavior is what people do, not who people are, and very often we will hear people being labelled with a behavior, equating the behavior with the person as if the two things are the same. And of course they are not

5 - Everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have available to them. And again this presupposition needs to be considered fairly carefully to understand it. As on the face of it it can seem to contradict another presupposition which states that everyone has the resources they need to be a success and achieve their goal. So you might be thinking to yourself, well if everyone has all the resources they need, and they are doing their best with this resource they have - well how can that possibly make sense…

When we are working with someone using NLP the only thing that we have as an indicator or barometer to what is going on in a client’s thinking, the internal representations they have is the outwardly noticeable behavior that they are producing in that moment. And as an observer, we can’t without communicating or specific questioning understand the client’s filters, values and beliefs, so all we have at this point is their behaviors as a reference. Which is why of course it is so important to have sensory acuity, why it is so important to get into Rapport with the client and essential to have a real connection to the client that we are working with, we want to be able to try on the client’s model of the world, to shift our perspective so that we view the world through the client’s lens and try on their values and belief systems so that we can fully guide them where they want to go.

You will hear this a lot in the work of NLP and that is that the Map is not the territory. It’s an awesome statement which if you think about it for a while will start to have some real meaning to you and it’s something that we can apply to the world of NLP coaching really easily. Now The map is not the territory, is a phrase coined by Alfred Korzybski, in his book science and sanity.  So what do we mean when we say that the map is not the territory.

Next on this list of NLP presupposition states that you are in charge of your mind and therefore your results. Now This makes good logical sense if you stop and think about it for a moment. When you consider this it is fairly clear that No-one can control the way you think, no one can form the internal representations you have for you and therefore the behavior and results you produce are created by you, they are yours and yours alone.

People have all the resources they need to be a success and to achieve. The simple fact of the matter is that there are no limits, with the exception of the limits that are self-imposed, to what you can achieve, and you have inside of you all of the power, resources and energy -  everything you need to be success in whatever you choose to do in your personal life, your work or business and your relationships health and fitness and so on. Within each and every single person, young or old, male or female, is an abundance of energy, an unlimited potential, a boundless creativity that when it is awoken will enable anyone to achieve absolutely anything at all.

In this lecture, I want to talk to you about how all procedures should increase wholeness.
When a client is operating with internal conflicts or self-imposed limiting beliefs, by default they are not operating at their best or operating in alignment with their true innate purpose in life. They are not striding forward to the life of their dreams, not living the life they deserve and not attracting the abundance of wealth, success and happiness that is there just waiting for them.

There is no Failure only feedback. As human beings we are incredible, unlimited learning machines, we start from a very early age like a sponge waiting to absorb as much knowledge as can be thrown our way, and over a few years, and with very little help from anyone else we learn to walk and talk, reason, argue.... In fact we learn a lot and very quickly. and one of the things I love to do it to remind people of a couple of the most incredible things they have already achieved. And of course if you are taking this program, then you have also, already achieved so much, so many amazing things, things you might not even attempt today, and maybe you didn't even realize just how amazing you were and are till now.

These presuppositions are coming together to create an incredibly powerful set of beliefs that if you take on board will help anyone to be the best they can be and will help an NLP practitioner to pull out the best in their clients? This to me is where NLP has its power, when you combine these presuppositions with the cause and effect equation then you have the foundations of Success with NLP

The Law of Requisite Variety - This law states that the person or system with the most flexibility will control the system. Now when we talk about control, we are not talking about forcing people to do things they don’t want or manipulation in any way. What we are referring to is the person who is most flexible in their communication will control the level of effectiveness of that communication.

 In NLP we are not interested in telling people how to run their lives, and I think it’s important to remember that as That would in itself be dis empowering. I have come across a lot and I do mean a lot of NLP practitioners, coaches, mentors who believe that they can ‘fix’ people. In fact there is a very famous stage hypnotherapist who believes he can ‘make you’ one thing or another. Well I don’t believe that is the case at all.

In this section we look at the  powerhouse that you have at your disposal to shape your life, see yourself achieving greatness and begin to live with an abundance of personal power.  Now Whether you know it or not you are in possession of an amazing piece of kit. Your unconscious mind, and it is responsible for way more than you probably realize.

The unconscious mind is where we are looking at the moment and if you recall the unconscious mind operates in accordance with a set of prime directives to the first of the prime directives of the unconscious mind. That being that the unconscious mind stores all of your memories. And as we are about to find out, you store a lot more memories, vividly accurately and with immense detail than you might realize.

The incredible unconscious mind diligently stores every single memory across our whole system and I trust that you now have a feel for how it is possible to quite literally and even physically change your past and your perception of it so that it creates new feelings and emotions. And on that subject, we are going to in this lecture look at the second prime directive of the unconscious mind and that is that the Unconscious mind is the domain of the emotions.

In the previous lecture we saw how the unconscious mind is the domain of the emotions, which builds on the memory storage of the unconscious mind so let’s look at how the unconscious mind organizes memories now and then we will get to an important lecture on memory repression and a strange phenomenon that occurs when people start to achieve amazing things.

This next lecture, and the ones following are very important if you are going to be working with clients because it will help you to understand a very common situation with clients, and that is the situation when a client says to you ‘I just don’t know what’s wrong with me I just feel so. X y or z’. When you experience this then there is a very strong chance that the unconscious mind has chosen to repress memories.

As we build up this picture of the unconscious mind and the incredible power that it and you have within you, it’s well worth taking a moment to consciously acknowledge all of the things that the unconscious mind does. Because by its very nature the unconscious mind is out of our everyday awareness and as such it is easy to take it for granted and not use it to the best of its ability. In this lecture we dig a little deeper into some of the other physical things your unconscious mind controls for you.

In the previous lecture we discussed the incredible way in which the unconscious mind runs the body and looked at some of those unconscious processes that we take for granted, such as breathing and pumping blood around our system and of course, within the body as I mentioned before there is a whole load of physical stuff, all the component parts of the body that make up the whole system of a human being. And you can think of the unconscious mind very much as the maintenance manager of your physical body.

In the last few lectures we have looked at the physical aspects of our system that are controlled by the unconscious mind and I am sure you will agree it is quite amazing just what goes on without our conscious knowledge. Well the unconscious mind also manages the way in which we create the internal representations that we have been referring to. And in this lecture, we are going to discuss how the unconscious mind is a highly moral being.

In this lecture, I want to show you an important concept when working with the unconscious mind and that is that the unconscious mind needs clear instructions to follow, and by that, I mean very clear instructions to follow. Because the unconscious mind operates very differently to the conscious mind, the unconscious mind doesn’t like to deal with logic or reason and very much prefers to do as it is told. So for that reason we need to be very careful what we say to the unconscious mind.

If you hadn't realized the previous lecture was a very important one. To operate at our peak we must always be very aware of the things that we are saying to the unconscious mind, the unintentional instructions that we may provide it with. So you know on those days when things are not quite what you had hoped, be careful what you say to yourself because whatever you say, your unconscious mind will take as an instruction and do everything it can to bring about that instruction as a reality. Serious stuff. Ok so let’s now look at how the unconscious mind actually controls and maintains perceptions.

Now at first encounter this might sound a little bit out there however the unconscious mind has the ability to tap into the energy within us and direct it in a way that will ultimately benefit us.

In the previous lecture we looked at the mysterious topic of energy, and did you do the sub modality work on your core body temperature. I find that is a good convincer for people as they get that wave of heat across their body Now a lot of people when they hear the word habit, often associate that with bad habits, and things that they want to change. But habits are a vital part of getting what you want in life. So let’s take a look at how the unconscious mind maintains and generates new habits.

Number 14 of the prime directives of the unconscious mind Your unconscious mind needs repetition until a habit is installed Now when you think about it This makes good sense, and of course the more you do something the more likely it is to become a habit and that includes engaging with your unconscious mind, living at cause, having personal power etc.

There is a saying that you may have heard before and that is. ‘neurons that fire together wire together’ and, neuro plasticity as it is known states that the more you think something or do something the more hardwired the behavior or thought pattern becomes, creating new neural pathways in the neurology and allowing old ones to become redundant.

Another reason for being very careful about how you choose to communicate with your unconscious mind is that you give your unconscious mind instructions all the time, and your unconscious mind will look for as many ways to back up the instructions you give it, seeking out evidence that is otherwise wouldn’t have even considered. However it doesn't stop there as we are about to find out.

So far, I have been talking very much about integrity and wholeness. And by that, I mean everything working in harmony together to produce an outcome that it positive and empowering. And here is the thing the unconscious mind is extremely powerful, and you will be able to craft the life of your dreams when you fully harness the power within you, AND you can still do more to ensure that your unconscious mind operates at its peak and part of that is understanding that the unconscious mind works best as a Whole integrated unit.

In this lecture, we will be looking at symbols and why they are important to the unconscious mind OK so in NLP you will very often here practitioners saying ‘do you have a picture ‘and this is a fundamental aspect of how we form our internal representations. Now if you are new to NLP and certainly if you plan on working with others, when you do so I pretty much guarantee that at some point you will meet someone who says that they can’t create a picture. So what are you going to do if and when that happens.

This next prime directive states that the unconscious mind takes everything personally. Now this prime directive on the unconscious mind is if you like the basis of the concept we spoke about earlier in the course, that of perception is projection. And if you recall perception is projection states in its simplest terms that whatever we see externally is a reflection of ourselves at some level. So let’s take a look at what that means.

In this lecture, we are going to be looking at the last of the Prime directives of the unconscious mind and that is that the unconscious mind does not process negatives and first of all well done for sticking through all twenty of the prime directives of the unconscious mind. These are really important if you want to truly assist people in being the best versions of themselves, so I applaud you for taking all of these in. And in our final lecture I want to show you something that a LOT and I do mean o lot of people get confused about including NLP practitioner and NLP trainers, however I am going to show you this in a way that will be easy for you to remember

Welcome to this section on Rapport and in this section, we are going take a look at what Rapport is, we will look at how to get into rapport with someone you are communicating with and we will look at how to gauge whether or not you are still in rapport and how to maintain that rapport with whoever it is you come into contact with be it at work or in your personal life. We will also look at some really neat tricks with rapport such as crossover mirroring and I will share with you a way of building rapport on the telephone which works every time, so if you use the phone a lot for your work, then you are going to get a lot out of that part as well.

In the previous lecture I gave some of the great reasons to learn about building rapport, and you know, rapport is such a wonderful tool that if you learn it will serve you so well in all areas of your life. It has certainly got me out of a few situations in the past and I know for a fact that it has helped me to win a lot of work over the years. So let’s carry on now and look at Rapport as the basis of all meaningful communication.

A massive 93% of our communication is conducted unconsciously. And that the actual words we use make up only 7% of that communication. And that may have come as a bit of a surprise to you which is fine. And I hope that you have started to notice these things in other people as you go about you day to day.  I also eluded to the process of matching and mirroring which is the NLP process that we will use to instantly establish rapport with anyone at all quickly, easily and effortlessly so that you can, become more popular, have your messages really well considered and become known as a great communicator. SO that is what we are going to be looking at in this next lecture.

Coming up we are going to go through a list of things that you can actually match or mirror to establish rapport and I have a nice mnemonic to help you remember all of that as well so let’s look into a bit more detail at the actual things that you can match and mirror.

In this lecture, I am going to show you how you can use this newly established rapport to influence the person you are communicating with, become more persuasive, and ensure that your message gets across to them in the best possible way. So let’s take a look at Pacing and leading and towards the end of the lecture I am going to share with you a little trick for testing whether the person you are communicating with is in the optimum state for being influenced or persuaded by your communication.

In the previous lecture we looked at how you can lead a client to influence, persuade and communicate more effectively with them so you now know how to build rapport and I hope you have been trying out your new skills to match and mirror someone so that they unconscious get the feeling that we share a common ground with them. So how do we know we have successfully built rapport, what are the indicators of rapport and how can we spot them

Next up lets now walk through a fairly typical scenario and see how all this could come together to result in you getting int a good rapport with someone. And in this case, we are going to take the example of walking into a business meeting and establishing rapport with someone.

Next I want to show you something really cool that will enable you to match a person’s physiology for the purpose of building rapport really easily and covertly and then I have a challenge for you which is a lot of fun as well ok. so let’s look now at crossover mirroring.

Next up we are going to look at how to build rapport on the phone. Now this lecture is a bonus lecture in many ways and it has been created for those people who say, “yeah this is all well and good but most of my meetings and contact with clients is done on the phone, so what am I supposed to do? - I mean I can’t match physiology on the phone, right?” which is something that has come up more than once on my training, and it’s a fair question and one that comes up a fair bit so let’s deal with that now, because the good news is that you can absolute build rapport on the phone, and you can do it very quickly and very easily by following just a few simple processes.

Let’s take a look at the typical indicators that signal a change in internal representation or a change in thinking, and these are the slight physiological signals that we can easily pick up on if we are using peripheral vision. Remember though that this is a list of the most common changes that you can spot, however it isn't everything ok. Although if you commit these to memory you will be well on your way to getting good at sensory acuity and the good news is that I have a linguistic tool for you to remember that will help you along. So let’s look at BLESS as an overview and then we will drill down into each one and get more detail in some short and snappy lectures.

Hey welcome back and welcome to this more detailed look at breathing from a sensory acuity perceptive. Now I mentioned before breathing is a really great indicator that there has been a change in the client’s internal representation. If you are in rapport and you have matched the clients breathing, then you will easily spot a shift in their internal representation and then you will be able to act accordingly. And there are a few things that you can look out for in the clients breathing that will stand out and help you to identify a change in thinking, and in fact some of these are covered in Rapport as well. So let’s take a look at them now.

In the previous lecture we looked at the B of the BLESS model which as you know stands for breathing and I suggest you go and try spotting shifts in peoples breathing as you are talking to them, its actually pretty easy OK so now we are going to move on to the next letter in the BLESS model and that is the letter L which stands for  Lower lip size.

In the previous lecture we looked at the L of the Bless model which if you recall stood for lower lip size. And you can easily spot physiological changes in the lips that can be associated to a particular state. And again I suggest you have a play with this and chat to some friends or family and just become aware of the changes in the lower lip size as you do so and see if you can associate a state to these. OK so on to this part the next letter in the BLESS model and that is the E for EYES.

If you recall we started with B for breathing and we looked at the types of shift you can look out for in a person’s breathing, then we looked at the lower lip size and the tightness of the lips which again can be linked to an internal state. Then we looked at the eyes and how the pupils may dilate and other changes that may signify a change in the internal representation and now let’s look at the next letter in the BLESS model and that is the S of skin color.

The BLESS model is something that will serve you well so be sure to keep it in mind, you now have some great tools already for understanding other people so let’s move on to the final letter in our BLESS model the S of skin tonus. And then I will show you a little exercise that will prove to you that you can quite literally read someone’s mind when you get good at all this stuff we have been covering.
