Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a psychological process that involves analyzing the strategies used by successful and achieving individuals and adapting them to achieve a particular objective. It links thoughts, language, and behaviors with specific outcomes.
This is a Foundational NLP level course. The following twelve hours of video-based instruction will be led by Kain Ramsay, your course instructor.
Originally formulated and described by John Grinder and Richard Bandler, NLP is a model for how we communicate and interact with others, ourselves, and the world. This video explains the NLP communication model and how we process information that comes in from outside us (activating life events) and what we do with it once it has entered us.

"Concrete" and "abstract" are terms used by Jean Piaget to describe human learning. The idea of ‘concrete thinking’ involves facts about tangible objects, while ‘abstract thinking’ involves a creative process. By assuming responsibility for our own lives, we step into abstraction. As we take responsibility for every aspect of our life, we gain abstract authority.
How far would you go to save a loved one? Have you ever seen stupidity that later resulted in creativity? What do you do differently than most people? Is everyone happy if you are happy? These questions can help you expand your neuro-pathways; they will allow you to determine whether there is room for new ideas or truths within your current frame of reference. This is the first part of a two-part video.

Becoming more abstract (flexible) in our thinking is not about deciding whether something is ‘right’ or wrong’; it’s about becoming open-minded and flexible enough in our thinking to consider and evaluate new ideas. In this video, Kain further unpacks the ideas of ‘abstract’ and ‘concrete’ by looking at what it means to have a flexible or inflexible mindset.
The present to desired state NLP model is a means to define another person’s best route to individual progression by determining the current state (where they are) followed by desired state (where they want to be). In this video lecture, we discuss the present to desired state model in a way that will enable you to relate it to your current life circumstances.
Human beings grow in self-awareness through a 7-stage evolutionary process. Maturity isn’t decided by experience, skill or even by age, but rather, by a person's readiness to accept full responsibility for their life. In this video lecture, we discuss self-awareness and individual growth as a journey that people go on, and it’s in better understanding themselves via insight that enables them to make improvements for the better. This video is part 1 of 2.

An abstract idea is one that does not involve objects, principles, or things that are physically present. Abstraction relates to symbolic thought, which uses the substitution of a symbol for an object or purpose. Abstract thinking is critical if we hope to express ourselves genuinely and fruitfully in life. In this video lecture, we discuss a series of questions you can ask yourself to warm up your ‘abstract’ mind.
We either define ourselves in a way that allows for personal growth or in a way that limits and restricts us. Many people unconsciously identify in a way that is prohibitive or restricting for them. In this video lecture, we discuss a range of the distinctive ways human beings can identify - and some useful routes that empower us to develop and improve ourselves.
The presuppositions of NLP are not rules or statutes, and we do not even claim they are true! We use them as guiding principles and as a basis to organize and guide our daily lives. Presuppositions are implicit assumptions about life, the world, or people in general that are grounded in linguistics. Here Kain explains the underlying assumptions of NLP.
The phrase "the map is not the territory" was coined by Alfred Korzybski to illustrate the difference between belief and reality. The way we see the world is based on guesswork at best, and not seeing this can lead to a wide range of problems and relationship tensions. Kain explains how just like a map has limitations and blind-spots, our perception of reality is only ever a limited reflection of what's real.
This video explores the different methods of applying NLP: for increasing self-awareness, improved emotional management, becoming more socially aware, and the ability to have a positive impact on other people's lives.
In many practical situations, NLP can be useful by establishing rapport with others at work, forming good connections personally, or improving sales by more deeply understanding customers' needs. Kain discusses the everyday uses of NLP in this video, and in the process outlines how people can advance: Self-Awareness; Self-Management; Social Awareness; Social Influence.
Wisdom is a state in which the rational mind and the emotional mind meet. The wise mind is the part of us that is able to know and experience truth. It is when someone is certain that something is true or accurate. This video describes the emotional, rational and wise parts of the human mind and shows how this idea can be used in all future self-reflection and growth.
A frame of reference is a complex collection of assumptions and attitudes that we use to filter perceptions. It includes our beliefs, prejudices, values and other biases that contribute to our decisions. We all possess a sense of naivety that is based on the frames of reference we use to view the world. In our upbringing we all develop a sense of what 'normal' is.
Memory anchors are formed at an early age, and we are not taught how to reflect on them. Anchors are just assumptions; they are limiting philosophies that keep people inefficient. As Kain explains in this video, the journey to growth and maturity involves allowing ourselves to grow out of limiting notions we formed about ourselves when we were young.
Our behavior is determined by how we interpret our experiences. The objective of this video is to provide you with a central model to help you better understand the impact that our interpretations have on the resulting results throughout our lives. Our interpretation of challenging situations, whether positive or negative, affects the results we garner.
The video includes a discussion of the three aspects (and main influencing factors) of our state: these include the internal, relational and developmental dimensions. Using self awareness as a guideline will allow us to connect with other people more effectively. Our general attitude and outlook on life determine our ability to relate to various people.
The 'Circle of Concern' represents the range of concerns people have about the world and their lives in general - including their health, families, finances, employment, etc. In this video, Kain discusses the primary differences between the circle of trust and the circle of disempowerment. See which of the two circles you can identify and relate to the most.
There are four types of goals: short-term, medium-term, long-term and lifetime. In general, when people refer to "having too many goals", they are usually referring to two: long-term goals and lifetime goals. Too many of these can seem overwhelming. Kain discusses the different goals we can pursue and how they deserve variable amounts of time to fulfill.
A vital part of taking responsibility for one's actions is being clear about what one thinks, does, and wants. Clarity allows you to design better actions that will get you to where you want to be. Clarity is the starting point for moving forward. In this video, Kain presents then questions we can ask to remove all ambiguity as we strive towards our 'desired state'.
Negative thoughts are not liked by the mind. By using 'positive language', we can influence ourselves (and others) to achieve desired outcomes rather than unfavourable outcomes. In this video, we explore a useful way to define goals by framing them in the positive. People who learn how to do this seldom find difficulty in mustering up the motivation to take action.
Our subjective well-being is often dependent on how we approach problems and how we solve them. Focusing on what we want is the only way to solve problems and manage tensions. The video explains ten creative solution-focused questions we can use when solving problems or working towards a goal we care about.
Some people spend more time complaining about their problems than taking steps to resolve them. People rarely change or grow until their desire to improve exceeds their desire to stay the same. Our ability to identify why ‘things’ break makes us capable of coming up with plans to fix them. Here, Kain outlines four attitudes we can take to face life's challenges.
The ability to self-reflect serves to keep you focused on home improvement, as well as to ensure that you are living a fulfilled life as you grow and develop. In this video, Kain offers self-reflection questions that you can consider as you reflect on the main ideas you've learned throughout this section.
Reflection helps us understand who we are, what we value, and why we think the way we do. This is a form of self-analysis that allows us to align our lives with how we want them to be. Virginia Satir is the model on which NLP was based by two of its principal founders, John Grinder and Richard Bandler. Kain shares some of her insights in this video.
In her writings, Virginia Satir emphasized the importance of authentic communication to increase awareness, healthy relationships, and positive mental health and wellbeing. Kain discusses the correlation between our assumptions and beliefs and how we communicate with others in this video. He outlines the four foundational assumptions Satir held.
In Gestalt therapy, the focus is on the individual's experiences in the present moment as well as the adjustments people make as they gain self-awareness. The German psychotherapist Fritz Perls is known for his work on Gestalt Therapy (the relationship between experience and behavior). Kain discusses Gestalt therapy's essential concepts in this video.
Competent communication is about understanding people, not winning an argument or forcing opinions on others. Healthy conversation is not only about saying the right thing at the right time, but also not mentioning the wrong thing at the wrong time! During this video, Kain presents the four fundamental stages of communication.
All human beings have a powerful yearning for improvement, personal growth, and creative expression that helps them achieve their fullest potential. Physicist Carl Rogers proposed that humans prosper when surrounded by a certain set of interactional conditions. Here, Kain explains how we can incorporate these conditions into our interactions.
Models and methods regarding how the brain processes and stores information from everyday experiences are known as representational systems (also known as sensory modalities). This video discusses how to create connections with others; we should use a frame that can facilitate a comfortable dialogue with the other person.
In this thought-provoking video, we discuss some of the reasons why people act, behave and make the decisions as they sometimes do. A number of important values are discussed, and how they influence people's choices in life. This is the first part of a two-part video.

A skill is an obtained ability to perform well. A strategy is a systematic plan, consciously adapted and monitored, to improve one’s performance. There is often confusion between the terms skill and strategy. In this video, we differentiate between these two terminologies.
Some people are naturally skilled at developing a vision and thinking strategically. The video outlines a process that can be used to discover a person's life strategy, the means by which they are achieving their goals. The instructor sets a challenge that invites you to use a given framework to analyze another person's strategy to accomplish an outcome you aspire to.
Both failures and victories are interrelated. Breakdowns often signify the beginning of a new stage of your life. Usually, breakdowns and breakthroughs go hand in hand. This video shows the difference between having a breakdown and receiving breakthroughs; two very different attitudes and mindsets that we can take towards the challenges we face in life.
As you continue to develop and mature, the ability to reflect can serve to help you keep your focus on self-improvement and also ensure that you experience fulfillment in life. This video covers a number of self-reflection questions you can think about in order to make sense of what you've learned in this section, and since the beginning of the training course.
This final video from Kain brings the course to a close, and he shares a few recommended readings for further study. After this, he then offers a few options for further research and study that are available to you for furthering your personal or professional development.

This enlightening training will delve into how the principles and practices of Neuro-Linguistic Programming can boost your personal productivity and fuel your personal growth. Through NLP techniques such as reframing, visualisation, and goal setting, we can learn to identify limiting beliefs that may be holding us back from achieving our full potential.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an approach to communication, personal growth, and psychotherapy that focuses on the connection between neurological processes (neuro-), language (linguistic), and behavioral patterns learned through experience (programming). It has been widely utilised in various fields such as business, education, sports, and therapy.
One of the fundamental principles of NLP is self-awareness. By becoming more aware of our own thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors, we can gain a better understanding of ourselves and how we interact with the world around us. This self-awareness allows us to identify areas for improvement and make positive changes in our lives. This is what you will learn in this course.
NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, explores the impact of language on our thoughts and actions. By recognizing language and behavior patterns, we can foster positive changes in ourselves and others with greater ease. This exploration aims to equip students with a nuanced understanding of 'change dynamics', tailored to help students apply all that they learn.
Some of the key concepts covered in this course include:
- A framework for understanding emotions and creating positive states of mind
- Strategies for setting clear, achievable goals and overcoming unhelpful beliefs
- The role of self-awareness and insight in enabling personal growth & development
