Course Description

Course Update: Added more tips and tricks in May 2016.

The information in this course will enable you to make business networking easier and more comfortable... so you will connect with more people faster.

Business is all about connecting with people. The good news is we can all learn to network. Human beings are social creatures. Even if you are shy or introverted you have an innate, genetic ability to form relationships with other people. We are all networking all the time.

The trick is to understand how networking actually works... how we meet someone, get to know them, and decide if we want to create a relationship. The old rules of networking don't work in the 21st century. The old networking process where you create an elevator speech, hand out a bunch of business cards and try to connect with them after the event. Even if you do meet someone at a networking event when you reach out later they don't take your call or return your emails. That may have worked in the past, but it doesn't create connections any more.

There's more to networking than just an elevator speech.

Many people make the mistake of focusing too much on their networking introduction to carry the weight. An elevator speech isn't enough to truly connect with someone. If you only focus on your introduction you can miss out on the rest of the conversation. The conversation is where the connections happen. You need a way to engage people in conversations that doesn't limit you but is comfortable and natural.

Learn to drop the elevator speeches and engage people in real conversations.

Relationships are two-way interactions. That's why networking conversations and connections are so important to building profitable relationships when you go to professional events or conferences.  People respond to networking authentically... just being yourself can go a long way. But it's not enough by itself.

Here's what one student had to say about this course...

"I never wanted to network again... I had terrible experiences networking early in my career. It put me off to even going to work events. The stress just wasn't worth it. After working with Eric the doors opened. The techniques I learned have enabled me to meet clients as easily as chatting over a cup of coffee with a friend. The emphasis on story and being conversational were particularly useful to me. Pitch for Success made it easy to network."

KIMBERLY LAFAVE Certified Mediator & Paralegal

The Secret Lies in the 5-Stage Networking Process.

When you meet people you are following a process... whether you realize it or not. I've just identified what it is and I can teach you to use it to your advantage. I've spent 30 years in business as a sales person, entrepreneur, trainer and business coach. In that time I've learned that networking can make a huge difference in everything you do, if you do it well.

My network helped me get a job offer in 1 1/2 hours.

In 2009 I lost my job. I activated my network and in no time had multiple job offers. The people I was connected to spread the word for me and the job offers flooded in.

My network helped me start a successful business.

Instead of taking any of those jobs I used a connection my network brought me to start a successful IT training business. I worked for companies like Cisco, SAIC, Polycom and organizations like Freddie Mac, NATO and Virginia Polytechnic Institute... all because of how I meet people and built connections with them.

Now I teach you how to have the same success whether you're trying to start a business, grow a company, get a promotion or a new job.

When you know what process to follow you know exactly what to do when you're networking. When you can do the right thing at the right time you improve your chances of connecting with people who matter to your success. Those connections have a higher probability of turning into real, meaningful, profitable relationships for you, and for them.

Follow the process and you WILL meet more people... and get more follow up meetings. That will make networking work for you too.

That's what this course is all about... empowering you to create profitable business relationships. This program is designed to teach you the skills you need to excel at business networking in the 21st century. And to make it easier and more natural too.

You need to connect to build relationships... this course can help.

Whether you're brand new to business networking or you have been networking for years our courses and programs help you improve your skills, increase your confidence and boost your ability to build a network naturally and comfortably. Everything we do is based on building Relationships, being Authentic and effective Storytelling.

Networking is a Process... Know the Process and You'll Know What to Do Every Time

Many people don't realize that there are 5 Stages in Networking. Whenever you meet people you are moving through these stages. If you don't know how the process works then how are you supposed to know what to do at each stage?

The answer is to understand the process of business networking so you know exactly what to do and exactly when to do it... anywhere, any time. Without taking years or months to fumble around and figure it out by yourself.

"But I already know how to network..."

Maybe you've got the basics down, you just need some help refining your approach. It's possible you're just struggling with a particular area of the process. Focusing attention on improving just one thing could make all the difference between a nice chat and scheduling that important follow up appointment with a new client.

Meeting more people isn't the key... it's meeting more of the RIGHT people.

The question is, are you making the most of opportunities to meet the people you can connect with? Are you getting in front of the people who you can build profitable relationships with?

Why should you learn about professional networking? Great question! Here are a few of my thoughts.

Section 1: Networking Basics
12:49

In this lesson we'll get oriented and I'll describe what why a strong network is so important.

Then you'll do an exercise to get those brain cells warmed up for the good work ahead.

15:57

In this lesson you will learn the steps of the networking process.

You can't improve what you don't understand, so being clear what is happening as you meet people and try to develop connections, then relationships is critical to successful networking.

Pay close attention as there will be a review next to make sure you're fully understanding the process.

8 questions

These questions will help you review the lesson on the networking process. That way you'll know you understand it and can learn to tell the right story at the right time when you network.

Section 2: Making the Introduction
17:08

In this lesson you will learn what a logline is and how it's used in Hollywood.

This will set the stage for you to create your own logline introductions in the next lecture. This will be the basis of your Moment of Introduction.

07:49

This exercise will guide you through creating your own logline introductions.

Download the brainstorming and exercise worksheets and follow the instructions in the demonstration video.

You'll be introducing yourself like a pro in no time!

16:21

In this lesson you will learn how industry jargon can kill your introduction and how to translate that jargon into language that will help anyone understand what you do.

After you watch the lesson download the Jargon to English exercise sheet and worksheet and complete the exercise before moving on to the next lesson.

14:13

This lesson will cover some super simple, but effective techniques for managing anxiety and nervousness when you network. It's difficult for some of us to face a room with 50 to 100 people we don't know. These techniques will help you deal with that stress so you can feel confident introducing yourself.

Once you've finished watching the lesson download the worksheet to use as a reference and practice the steps and techniques yourself.

Section 3: Conversation Skills
18:08

This lesson will teach you what a trailer is and how to use it to continue the conversation with someone once you've introduced yourself. After watching this lesson move to the exercise where you will be guided through creating your own all purpose and example trailers.

04:49

In this exercise you will create your example and all purpose trailers. Download the worksheets then watch the demonstration video before you begin. You'll be able to create one or both types of trailers whenever you need them.

18:35

In this lesson you will learn about how to know what other people are thinking when you talk to them, and how to make sure you are sending them the right signals too. How you present yourself is every bit as important as what you say when you network.

When you're done with the lesson you can download the Delivery Tips sheet to keep as a reference too.

10:05

In this practical lesson you will be presented with several techniques for practicing your introductions and trailers. If you don't practice then you will not know how effective your pitch will be when you say it out loud!

Section 4: Course Summary and Survey
04:59

It's a wrap! Now we will review what you've learned and finish up the course with some reminders.

Don't forget to take the course summary in the next lesson! Your feedback is important.

Eric Byrd, Networking Expert, Sales and Pitching Coach, Entrepreneur

Business is about people and relationships. The quality of your connections can make a huge difference in your business success. My mission is to help you to network naturally, present powerfully and sell successfully, regardless of your industry.

Connections are the key. If you're not connecting with people, you're just collecting business cards. My goal is to design and deliver relevant, effective and entertaining programs that teach practical networking, presentation and selling skills for those committed to taking action. Improvement requires action, knowing what action requires knowledge and skill... that's where I can help.

If you can't access and use the information in a course, it's useless to you. Pitch for Success is all about teaching practical skills that anyone can use immediately to improve their ability to network, present and sell to really engage authentically with people. Whether that's at a networking event, presenting to a group of co-workers, or engaging in a selling conversation with a potential client, the ability to get people's attention and draw them into a meaningful conversation is critical. I want to help you make it natural and comfortable.

I bring all my experience to bear when I teach. I meld my IT technical and training background, 20 years of sales experience ($40 million in closed business), some brain science, a dose of psychology, a lifetime of living as a small business entrepreneur and 15 years of screenwriting into useful and fun courses to help you learn the skills you need to succeed. My career has taken me from  the world of television, through two decades in technology sales, then to teaching IT engineering classes for Cisco, launching my own online training company, and most recently acting as a business advisor for the Small Business Administration in Virginia (SBDC). It all comes together to help me craft high quality learning for you that makes it easier and more fun to build the skills and confidence you need to meet and exceed your goals..

I strive to bring a fresh perspective to how people communicate and succeed in business and life, so you can learn the tools to naturally, comfortably and authentically stand out in a world crowded with noise and information.
