Welcome to my Course on Dynamic Range Compression in Music Production. In this course you will learn what a compressor is, why and when to use it, how it works, as well as get live examples of practical applications of compression in music production.
The concept of the Digital Audio Scale compared to Normal dB Sound Pressure Level. You will learn about peak level, also called digital full scale.
The concept of Audio Clipping and Full Scale Digital Level. You will learn what happens to audio in the digital domain if you try to push it above the "ceiling" that digital full scale has.
The concept of Dynamic Range in Music. You will learn the importance of using dynamic range to add "life", variation and impact in music. But also how you can decrease the dynamic range by compressing the audio and by doing so increase the average loudness level.
The concept of Average loudness level, and how to increase it by using dynamic range compression.
The fundamentals and theory behind dynamic range compression. You will learn about: Threshold level, Ratio, Attack Time, Release Time, as well as Gain Reduction.
Live Example of Compression on a Single Channel. Watch and listen as I add compression to a Bass Guitar Track, and use the Attack and Release Settings on the Compressor to accentuate the "pluck" of the strings.
Live Example of Compression on a Group Channel. Watch and listen as I add compression to a Drum Kit Group Channel to make the drums sound more punchy and full.
Live Example of Compression on a The Full Mix. Watch and listen as I add compression to the Master Bus (Stereo Out) to make the full mix louder. Also see how you can use a Loudness Meter to measure the Average Loudness Level of your entire track.
A short quiz to test your knowledge after taking this course.
Mike shares his own personal bonus tips on Compression.
