In this lesson, we will first what SCORM is all about. I will explain with the help of an analogy that is used very frequently to explain SCORM. Then we will see the advantages of using SCORM. It has been more than 15 years since SCORM has been introduced - and while I will not talk about the previous evolution - I will show how it is evolving for the future.

SCORM is a set of technical standards for e-learning software products. SCORM tells programmers how to write their code so that it can “play well” with other e-learning software. It is the de facto industry standard for e-learning interoperability.

Specifically, SCORM governs how online learning content and Learning Management Systems (LMSs) communicate with each other. Please note that SCORM does NOT speak to instructional design or any other pedagogical concern, it is purely a technical standard.

SCORM - what is this? Why you should use?

The objective of this lesson is to to load and enable a SCORM file in Moodle and to see how it functions in the course taking page.

Attached with this lesson - you will find a sample SCORM file that can be used for your experimenation. This file is sourced from and you can use it for your educational and testing. In an upcoming lesson - I will show you several sites where you can get free licensed SCORM content - either to experiment - or even to use in your own course as learning content.

How to use SCORM content in Moodle

Moodle is designed to encourage collaborative activities in your course. There are several good reasons for you to add collaborative learning into your course.

a. Firstly, pure online learning can be lonely to the learners because they will miss the interactions that is present in face-to-face classes. Collaborative activities will encourage them to connect with other learners.
b. Secondly, collaborating with other learners will increase engagement of your course which often translates to better learning.
c. Thirdly, as a teacher, you can use collaborative techniques to create student-generated-content. This will become valuable meta-data for your course - for example FAQs and real life projects from students.
Moodle Collaborative Learning Techniques

OER stands for Open Educational Resources. OER are any resources available at little or no cost that can be used for teaching, learning, or research.  The  term  can  include  textbooks,  course  readings,  and other learning content; simulations, games, and other learning applications; syllabus, quizzes, and assessment tools; and virtually any other  material  that  can  be  used  for  educational  purposes.
OER - and why you should use it with Moodle

This is a collection of best OER resources across various sources. A wide variety of content and tools to implement OER in just about any course topic can be found.

  1. You will find OER with a broad spectrum of quality - good, bad and everything in between.
  2. OER content often will serve as a good starting point for you to build upon.
  3. Another good and quick usage is to use OER content as auxiliary learning material - while using your top quality content as the main course material

Adaptive Learning Techniques in Moodle

Most learning content is linear - this very course that you are going through is linear! You start at lecture #1 - and then progress through lecture #n - and the course is done.  This is true with most products out there today - Udemy, Coursera, several MOOCs and so on. But the problem is that - this is NOT the best solution that is possible!

Welcome to Adaptive Learning with Moodle!

What is Adaptive Learning? Why should you do this?

PTA stands for "Pre-Training Assessment". It is a very common best practice in training circles - and we will see why it makes great sense to adopt in our Moodle course. Essentially, before you launch a course, you will assess different aspects of your learners. And based on this assessment, you can then implement adaptive learning techniques. Without doing this - you will be left with making a lot of assumptions about your learners.
PTA - how and why you should do this in Moodle

Now let us learn about the single most powerful tool Moodle offers for Adaptive Learning. And that is the LESSON activity. In this lecture, I will show how the Lesson activity looks when fully functional - and in the next lesson I will show how to create a lesson and all the tips, tricks and pitfalls associated with Lesson Activity.

The lesson activity is extremely powerful because it enables a teacher to deliver content and practice activities in fully adaptive path.
Moodle's most powerful tool for Adaptive Learning

Even though Lesson activity is so powerful - it is probably the MOST UNDER USED activity in Moodle. There are a few reasons for this - mostly because the lesson creation interface is difficult to understand. In this lesson I will show you how to easily beat the problem and many more tips!

When creating Lesson, you have to keep 4 aspects in mind - the learning content, the learning path for the student, the assessment and the linkings that go with it.

Creating a Lesson Module in Moodle

The Lesson module is very powerful and complex. It can only be mastered with practice. Do this assignment carefully replicating the video lectures from this section and previous.

We are well on our way into Moodle's "Adaptive Learning" abilities. In the next 3 lessons, I will discuss some more excellent features that will provide you fine grained control on adaptive behavior.

The first feature is called as "Activity Completion". I will first show this in action. I have logged in my live server as a test student - inside the project management course.
Moodle Activity Completion Tracking

I show you 4 different examples of how Moodle will dynamically change the criteria for "automatic activity completion" in this lecture.

You will learn how to restrict access to activities and resources with a very useful feature of Moodle called as "Restrict Access". This was also called as "Conditional Activities" in earlier versions.

This feature allows you to set conditions which have to be mandatorily met - and only after which a learner on your course will be able to access a particular activity or learning resource. This is a very useful part of adaptive learning because you will be able to build elaborate logic as I will show in this lesson.

Moodle Restrict Access aka Conditional Activities
Gamification of Moodle
5 Lectures 25:21

As the teacher and course designer on an online platform - your single largest challenge will be student engagement and getting them to achieve specific goals though you course.

You want your learners to get the very best results and value from your course. Just having fantastic content is usually not enough. You will want the students to ACTUALLY finish lessons. You will want them to actually study hard. You will want learners to ACTUALLY engage with your course - and when they ENGAGE, then they remember lessons better, understand better, and apply better.

What is "Gamifying" Moodle?

Experience points, scoreboards and awards are the most common elements of games.  The easiest way to start implementing gamification in your online classroom is to use a combination of "practice quiz and scoreboard".

Gameboards were a concept that started very early in arcade games - they serve to motivate gamers to compete more and more - and so greatly increase motivation and engagement.

Moodle Scoreboards - Activity Results

Are you familiar with this screen - it is from an extremely engaging popular game. This screen is used to show the gamer's progress through the game. How far they have finished - where they are now - and what they have to do to complete the game and WIN!

Moodle Course Progress Bar

One of the most popular gamification techniques is issuing Badges to users. Badges are among the most visible elements of gamification, the use of game-thinking and game mechanics to engage your audiences.
