Scott takes you by the and walks you through each component of the #BlackFriday Udemy Course Launch Challenge. This forces you to conform with extremely stringent standards.
The challenge incorporated five core challenges. Two of the tasks were required.
The “Structured Intro” task forces you to develop an introduction to your course that is as inspiring as possible. This was not Scott’s strong suite at the time.
It is now.
After that he had to create “Structured Activities.” This was fulfilled via multiple choice quizzes. But more complicated tasks can be used as well as contests within your course.
Then three bonus tasks got us into the drawing. These were “Course Goals” that were limited to just three. You will notice how this cleans up your summaries.
The next was a “Prepared Delivery” that required the publication of a video with no filler words. This in itself is a class on proper diction when speaking into a microphone.
The third and final challenge was the creation of a video displaying an agreeable “Tone of Voice.”
Dr. Brown explains the importance of using the full number of words in each of the component forms of the course. This is as follows.
It is vital that these are all well written with proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling and are keyword rich. The simplest form of search engine optimization (SEO) comes from maximizing the amount of text that you associate with each Udemy course component.
The spiders that the search engines send out to collect data on pages cannot read videos. These internet robots rely on written text to infer video and audio content.
This is somewhat like the Borg mind on the old Star Trek series. Collective conscious has limitations when it comes to SEO.
You have to help the search engines by feeding them keyword rich information regarding your course.
Use this MS Word document as a guide to your own process for creating Udemy courses. This is the exact tool we personally use to create courses on Udemy.
If you will fill it out completely you will notice that your course will be approved faster and with more compliments from Udemy administration.
The introduction video is important because it sets the tone for your course. This is the first communication your student receives in the new student-instructor relationship.
Do not confuse this video with the introduction video.
The introduction video of for teaching. The promo video is for selling.
Don’t place a promo video in the spot for the intro video.
I try to make sure that I tell the student what benefit they will be enjoying after studying the course. This may be understanding the stock market better or in the case of this course the #BlackFriday2015 and #BlackFriday2016 Course Launch Challenge process.
Then I explain to them the different ways to contact me depending on whether or not they want privacy. Most importantly I let them know that I respond to them in any way the reach out to me in no more than 24 hours on regular work-days or up to 72 hours on long holidays or special events such.

I created the course on Act 20 and 22 as a helpful guide to the public that garners exposure for our students. The intent is to help bring jobs to the island and get jobs for our students.
I submitted the course and everything was approved except they requested that the word course in the title be changed to guide.
I made the necessary change and resubmitted the course. At that point I have to wait for the Udemy team to finalize.
The response came back from Earl. The Udemy design team is so backed up with new courses that they do not have the image created for the course.
This is important because the image is the overlay for the promotional video.
Earl asked if I wanted to put in a placeholder. I resubmitted the course but did not answer Earl.
The next day the image was not changed. So I sent a message through the text video section.
I learned that the test video section is our direct messaging to the Udemy team when we are taking a course through approval.
Earl put in a placeholder that was very appropriate but very ugly. I left it in place and sent links out to my current students to get the word out.
A few trickled in.
We may do a paid press release. Or we may build out the SEO on the course with the students next semester.
This is the first time either of us have launched a free course. What I have learned is that the public is not as interested in a free course as they are in a paid course that is given away for free.
Unfortunately, this course is a public service guide. The alternative marketing route is not available.
The course now has over 100 students and rising. But it is not holding on the search engines.
We will have to more work this semester as a student team.
In conversation with Daniel Hall I mentioned the graphic. He swapped it out.

I chaired the session entitled “Credit And Default Risk: Origins And Resolution.” Then I was the discussant for research entitled "NPL Resolution: Bank-Level Evidence From A Low Income Country" by finance professor Lucy Chernykh of Clemson University and Abu S Amin of Sacred Heart University and Mahmood Osman Imam of the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh.
That same year I presented the same study to the Annual Meeting of the Financial Management Association in Chicago, Illinois. I did so in session 183 – Topics in Mergers and Acquisitions chaired by James Conover of the University of North Texas with Teresa Conover as discussant. I chaired session 075 – Financial Crisis: Bank Debt Issuance and Fund Allocation. Then I was the discussant for TARP Funds Distribution: Evidence from Bank Internal Capital Markets by Elisabeta Pana of Illinois Wesleyan University and Tarun Mukherjee of the University of New Orleans.
