No one is really able to influence others unless he or she is able to manage themselves. This program utilizes the personal half of emotional intelligence to build the skills needed to correctly manage actions, words, demeanor, and attitude. The importance of a person’s example and how that impacts others is the primary focus.
This program also reviews how to obtain meaningful feedback about personal behavior and attitudes. Often people do not see some of the very behavior that is most destructive to the working environment. From the feedback, participants begin to improve resilience, optimism, creativity, flexibility, self-control, and self-regulation. The importance of consistency in behavior and attitude are also covered.

As we move throughout our day we unknowingly pick up negative emotions, aka “water bottles,” from other people and it drags us down. The reason we are unaware that we pick stuff up is because they are so very small. Things like what our spouse or kids are struggling with emotionally or the stress of other people in the workplace. Too often we take on other people’s problems because we want to rescue them or protect them from pain.
If you would like more energy and a happier more fulfilled life you must stop saving others from themselves. They created it, therefore they must find the solutions. Next time you are faced with the temptation to “fix” someone (aka take their “water bottles”), take a moment to pause, take a deep breath, state the facts, “I’m sorry this is happening to you.” Then ask them a simple question, “What are you going to do about this situation?” Re-direct the problem back to them so that they can seek to understand a solution.

I challenge you to be a better giver today. Every day this week find something out of the ordinary to give of yourself. Give of your time, your talents, your resources, your heart. And be sure to be a gracious receiver too. Show extra gratitude for things people do. Be specific “Hey Larry, I really appreciate the extra care you take getting these reports to me. Thank you for going the extra mile!”
