Description

I’m sure you’ve experienced the frustration of editing an image, but not being able to make it match your imagination. You can see the finished photo clearly in your mind’s eye, but your editing skills just let you down. I too had this problem before I learned how to the use the Nik Collection editing tools and Viveza in particular.

A few years back, the Nik Collection of editing tools cost hundreds of dollars and was the default choice for many professional photographers. Why? Because these tools allow you to produce exceptional image results in minutes. Then Google bought Nik Software and in March 2016 the tools were released for free. Now any photographer can download the complete collection and use them without paying anything.

But despite these great tools being freely available, many people still don’t use them. A few may experiment with test images, but ultimately, they don’t master the tools. They don’t have access to the necessary experience explaining how to achieve the best results.

This course provides you with that experience. It’s designed to take the beginner and intermediate user through to the advanced level. You will quickly master all the elements of the interface allowing you to work efficiently with photographs. We will cover all the adjustment tools as well as how to use the powerful Control Point technology, to target adjustments on precise areas of your photography. Everything you need to know to transform your photography will be fully explained and demonstrated. The course concludes with four full worked examples for which the starting image files are provided. You can also download the finished images to compare these with your own work.

If you want to quickly achieve professional results with your photography, this course will help take you there.

Who is the target audience?
  • This course is intended for photographers who want to quickly achieve professional standard image enhancement using the Nik Viveza package.
  • The course has been developed specifically with the beginner and intermediate level users in mind.
  • People that have found photo editing tools difficult to understand will find this course particularly helpful.

Introducing Viveza
5 Lectures 14:18

Although Viveza appears relatively easy to use, its simplicity hides a lot of power. This section of the course will introduce you to some of the reasons why you should use Viveza as well as just what's possible.

A further objective of this section is to ensure you have downloaded and correctly installed the Viveza software. Viveza is usually run from a host program such as Lightroom or Photoshop. How you do this differs between programs as do configuration options. The lectures in this part of the course will ensure you understand the configuration options as well as how to select what’s optimal for your needs.

Be sure to watch all the lectures, even if you think they don’t apply to you at present.

Although it’s possible to run Viveza as a standalone application, it works best when integrated with a host application. One such host application is Lightroom.

In this lecture, we look at how you select an image in Lightroom and then edit this in Viveza. It’s important to understand what happens “behind the scenes” when you do this. We also take a detailed look at the image options presented by Lightroom when working with Viveza and which will offer you the highest quality.

Launching Viveza from Lightroom
06:03

Although it’s possible to run Viveza as a standalone application, it works best when integrated with a host application. Both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Elements can act as host applications for Viveza.

In this lecture, we look at the different methods of launching Viveza from within these two applications. We also look at how Viveza works with Layers (found in Photoshop and Elements) and how this can be configured.

A First Example
5 Lectures 09:55

Introduction to Section 2 of the course in which the student will complete their first image editing example. A starting image file is provided for download as is a completed image. The student is encouraged to compare their own editing results with those from the lecture.

Preview 01:05

In this section of the course we are going to process our first example image. This is to help familiarise you with the Viveza interface and the types of adjustment you can make. By doing so, you will be better prepared for later lectures where having a little knowledge will speed your learning.

The starting image used in the example is provided below. Be sure to download the image and follow the editing on your own computer. Two high resolution versions of the image are provided. The first is in TIFF format and the other is a JPEG file. Both images are the same but if you have a slow or metered connection, please use the JPEG file which is much smaller.

In the final lesson of this section of the course, you can download a finished version of the image. This is the image you see created in the lessons. Be sure to follow the editing on your own computer then compare your finished image with the one at the end.

Preview 02:01

In this lecture, we start by applying global adjustments to the image. These affect the entire image rather than selected areas. We will use the global adjustments to address some of the problems we identified in the previous lecture. The lecture will also introduce you to some of the interface features of Viveza.

Having concluded the first example take a moment to evaluate your results. Download the finished sample file provided below and consider.

  • How does this image compare to the image you produced?
  • Are there noticeable differences or are the images quite similar?
  • If so, why do you think this happened?

Understanding the Viveza interface and its many features is the key to being able to work efficiently. Knowing how to use the interface properly will free you up to concentrate on determining and applying the adjustments necessary to perfect your image.

You should think of the Viveza interface as being divided into separate regions. This lecture will introduce you to the regions. The remaining lectures in this section will cover each of the regions in greater detail.

The Viveza Adjustments

The Viveza Adjustments Introduction
00:40

The Viveza application is designed to help you take control of Tone and Colour in your image. Tones relate to how light or dark the image is. These controls allow you to control the contrast in the image, either increasing or reducing it. They also allow you to lighten or darken areas. The colour controls provide you with a means to adjust the saturation as well as change the colours in the image.

In this section of the course we will examine both sets of these controls together with the Levels and Curves control. By the end of the section you will understand how to take full control of both the tones and colours in your image.

Viveza Adjustment Controls Introduction
02:17

Viveza provides several Tonal adjustment sliders. These are:

  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Structure
  • Shadow

In this Lecture, we look at the effect of each of these on your image and provide guidance as to how you might apply them.

The Tonal Controls

Viveza provides several colour adjustment sliders. These are:

  • Saturation
  • Warmth
  • Red
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Hue

In this Lecture, we look at the effect of each of these on your image and provide guidance as to how you might apply them.

The Colour Controls
04:21

If you are familiar with the Photoshop curves tool, then you will recognise Viveza’s Levels and Curves control. This is one of the most powerful controls available to you allowing you to manipulate both the tones and colours in your image. It isn’t the easiest control to use but your effort in mastering it can be well rewarded.

In this lecture, we will look in depth at this control and how you might use it to correct problems within your image.

Applying Selective Adjustments
6 Lectures 20:26

So far I the course we have been looking at global adjustments. These are the changes you make to a photograph that affect the entire image. They are very good for correcting problems but their use is more limited for enhancing images.

The most powerful transformations are achieved when we edit an image selectively. This means we select and adjust small areas rather than the entire image. The key to achieving professional results is making a good selection. A good selection will help you blend your adjustments into a photograph in a believable way for the viewer.

If you have spent any time working with tools such as Photoshop, you will know that making selections can be complicated and time consuming. Viveza changes all this as you will see. Using the Viveza Control Point technology you are easily able to make and change complex selections in seconds.

This section of the course will introduce you to everything you need to know about working with Control Points and making selective adjustments.

Selective Adjustments Introduction
00:56

Control points are the way you can make selections in Viveza. They allow you to position and size your selection with ease. But to get the greatest benefit from using these, you need to know a little about how they work.

In this lecture, we examine what is happening when we add or move a control point.

Working With Control Points
05:43

Understanding Masks
05:20

An advanced feature of Control Points is that they can be grouped together. This allows you to synchronise the adjustments across multiple control points. This allows you to achieve complex selections and apply the same adjustments across the entire selection.

In this lecture, we will examine how to work with control point groups to make complex adjustments to your images.

Working With Control Point Groups
04:09

One feature of Photoshop and Elements that isn’t shared by Lightroom is that of layers. Layers allow you to apply different adjustments onto separate layers in an image. The resulting image reflects the changes made to each of the layers.

A further aspect of layers is that they offer something called a layer mask. Layer masks allow you to hide or reveal areas of a layer so that you are applying a selective adjustment. Whilst Viveza offers selective adjustments through its control points, you might find these don’t have the precision you need. This is where layers can help you and Viveza, through the Google Selective Tool provides an easy way to work with them.

In this lecture, we examine the Tools section of the Google Selective Tool to work with Photoshop layers.

Working with layers in Photoshop / Elements
03:46

In this section, we have examined some of the most powerful features of Viveza as well as how you can better work with its host applications. In the next section of the course we will consolidate everything you have learned and apply it to three separate worked examples.
