Try it yourself:

After you finish the lesson, or while you are watching it - I suggest you'll do the following tasks:

• Install the computer audio recording driver
• Record your screen with your favorite microphone and with your computer audio
• With the same test video make sure you open at least one window, type something (letters and keys like shift and cmd), speak or putting up some music.

We will use all these stuff in the next lessons so make sure you have this test video and save the project somewhere on your computer. (To save go to: file-> Save or Cmd+S)

You can also download an example project for how the tasks should look like.

Make sure your test video is short (1-2 minutes and more than 10 seconds) so you can export your project quickly (We'll export the project in the next lessons)

Note:

If you have multiple screens you can choose which screen to use for recording. You cannot record multiple screens simultaneously.

Okay, right now I’m recording with QuickTime Player because I can’t show you how to new record with ScreenFlow while I’m recording. So, let’s begin.

When you first open ScreenFlow you’ll see this window.

You can choose if you want to record a video and from which camera, you can choose if you want to record audio or not, and which microphone.

You can choose if you want to record from the built in microphone or from other microphone, right now I am using the RODE Podcaster.

And you can choose if you want to record the computer audio. When you first check this box you’ll be asked to install a new driver. After you install the driver you’ll be able to record the computer audio.

If you click on this question mark you can see a ScreenFlow Quickstart (guide). We don’t really need this right now so i’ll close it, and if you click this arrow, we can set a timer. We can set the timer for like 2 minutes and 10 seconds, and then when I click set timer and I start recording, the recording will be stopped right after the 2 minutes and 10 seconds will be end.

Right now I don’t need this timer so i’ll be resetting the timer and then I’ll start recording. I want to show you this icon. When you open ScreenFlow this icon will pop and then, from here you can start a new recording, or click here or by pressing Shift+Cmd+2. You can also click configure recording so if you close this window we can configure recording and it will show up again. We can also hide desktop icons so if you have any files on the desktop and you want to hide them, it’s a really good thing and you can hide it quickly using this option and you can quit ScreenFlow.

Now I’ll start recording, and now you see a countdown timer of 3 seconds. Afrer the countdown ends you can record everything you see here, so if I do this everything will be recorded. It’s a bit slow because I’m using ScreenFlow and QuickTime Player, but after I will quit QuickTime Player it will be alright.

So, while you recording you can see how much time past from the beginning of the screen cast, now it’s 40 seconds, now I can do this and see 49 seconds. I can stop the record or pause it, so if I will do pause, nothing that I do right now will be shown in the video because I paused the video, and then I can resume it again. So I will stop the record and now you’ll se this window. We will learn about all the editing tools in the next lessons

After you finish recording you will see this window. this is the ScreenFlow workspace. the workspace is separated for 3 parts - the canvas or the the preview, The timeline and the properties panel. let’s talk about the canvas window. Everything that is on the timeline will be shown in the preview, we can click Cmd and the equals sign to make the preview bigger, and Cmd minus to make the preview smaller.

This is the canvas button. By clicking on it we can change some of the canvas options. We can resize the canvas and than move it to the position that we want. We can change it later but this is how it will stay for the whole video, we can’t change it as a video action. It’s a bit hard to understand but you will understand better after the next lesson. The export will be just what we see on the canvas so if you will change the canvas to a size of 1280 by 720 the final video after exporting will be at a resolution of 1280 by 720. This was the hardest thing to learn on the software I guess.

This color is the color of the background.

If the “Snap to Front Window” box is checked this is what happens, there is a grid line showing up and it snapping. If the box is unchecked it will not be snapped.

We can also reset to how it was in the beginning, cancel the changes or apply them.

we can also click the view in the options bar to change all the view settings. we can make the workspace to be at full screen and we can enter to a fullscreen preview. lets click the escape key to close it, now you can see we can zoom in or out, zoom to the actual size or zoom to fit to the window.

we can show the background as a checkerboard and show captions if we have already.

now let’s move to the timeline - In the timeline we have all the videos and objects and in the timeline we will cut and edit the videos.

We can scroll our video by moving the scrubber, we can also press the play button or to move to the end of the project or to it’s beginning. as we move forward in our video we can see the clock is moving too, we can see the seconds, minutes and frames.

If we want to get closer we can move this scale slider and we can see the duration of the video here.

there is also a time ruler right here.

In the timeline we can see all the tracks, we can make a track smaller or bigger for more comfort work and move tracks one above the other. this means that if we have 2 objects the one that on the upper track will cover the lower one. here’s an example, you don’t need to understand what i’m doing right now just see how the objects are changing to foreword and backward

we can also see the aud io channels here, the top meter represents the left channel and the bottom meter represents the right channel.

now to the timeline options.

We can choose wether we want the objects to snap or not,

we can choose if we want to hear the audio while we move the slider

We can hide or show the thumbnails, show tab bar and captions track, we will talk about it later.

• Add a video action, zoom to a specific spot and then add another video action and zoom out to 100%
• change the properties as much as you want and get to know them

In the Properties panel we can add effects and other things like callouts.

Let’s start with the first tab - the video properties.

To start using the video properties we need to select a video from our timeline, let’s select this one and now we can see all the options are available. We can scale up the video by moving the slider or stretch it this way, if we will press shift while stretching the video it will keep the same aspect ratio.

We can move it’s position by typing the position that we want or just move the item on the canvas. We can also rotate the item on x axis, y axis and z axis by moving the thumb wheels, write the exact number and then press enter or drag this handle around. Here we can change the opacity. If we will click this arrow, the cropping options will be shown, now we can crop the video as much as we want, even more than 200 by typing the number or press the control key and then shrink the video that way.

We can add reflection if we want and change it’s value, and we can add shadow. right now the background is black so we won’t see the shadow but we can change it to a white shadow or any other color so we can see it.

We can change the angle of the shadow, change it’s distance from the object itself, change the opacity and the blurriness.

we can also play with the color controls to get the best for your needs.

and the last option here is video filters - it’s just like Instagram filters but for video, let’s take this blur for now and see how it works. We can disable the filter, change the radius and delete the filter, there are many other filters you can use and try and every filter has a bit different settings.

Now, let’s say you want to zoom in but just for 2 seconds and then get back to the regular scale - for this case you need to use the video action. Let’s add a video action and see how it works, now you can see the video action here on the timeline, we can scale up the video or move it around. now when we move backwards we can see that it moved, to get back to the regular scale just add another video action. great! now we can move it around in the timeline and make it longer or shorter.

In this lesson you will learn about the audio properties and screen recording options.

Let’s select our audio track and get started, we can low the volume down and even mute it.

The ducking option will mute other audio tracks so you can hear the track that you want. what does it mean? let’s take an audio file and put it in the project, now the music is disturbing and I can’t hear myself very well, so I will enable the ducking option on the track that I want to hear more, and now all other sound tracks will be at volume level of 10 precent. I can even totally mute it by change it to 0 precent.

We can smooth volume levels so we won’t hear many peaks and quieter parts will be a bit louder, and we can make the audio channels to be mono instead of stereo.

We can add effects and make the effect to be stronger by increasing the amount or the opposite.

If you don’t have a very good microphone you might want to remove background noise. Don’t make the amount too large because it will sound horrible, just change the amount to fit correctly with your background noise.

We can also add audio filters and play with their settings.

again, just like with the video properties, we can add audio action so we can mute a track for a few seconds and then make it louder again.

Now let’s move to the Screen Recording properties - first let’s select a screen recording track and now we can change the properties.

We can choose if we want to hide the mouse pointer or show it, we can make it bigger and add effects for clicks, we can change the way our cursor will look like and even choose a photo of any cursor we want. We can change the opacity of the cursor and add sound on click, we can change the volume of this sound and choose what sound will it be.

If you want your viewers to see what are you doing with the keyboard you can do it! you can choose if you want to enable keystrokes and if you want to show only modifier keys like command and shift and don’t show regular keys like numbers and letters.

You can change the height and the position of the keystrokes box and even change it with more complex options like font, background color, fade and more..

Just like every properties panel, you can add screen recording action and if you want to reset to defaults and remove all the screen recording changes you have made, you can do it by pressing the gear button and then “Reset to defaults”

To change the callout properties you first need to add callout on a screen recording track.

A callout let’s you highlight a spot on the screen, If we will choose Mouse cursor it will highlight the mouse cursor of course, If we’ll choose the Foreground window it will highlight it, just like here, and with Freehand you can highlight whatever you want. you can draw the highlight area this way, you can increase the size of the pencil and even create a square area to highlight.

We can change the opacity of the highlighted area so at 100 precent it will be the only thing that is visible, we can also blur the area, this is great for typing personal information. And we can blur the background so it will give more focus for the area.

You can zoom up and add border, this is available only for the mouse cursor highlight and the foreground window, we can even add an outline, change it’s color and it’s thickness.

You can add shadow and make it bigger.

The feather here is not for the shadow, it’s in general. let’s increase the feather and now you can see it’s blend better. we can also make the highlighted area more rounded and in the end you can choose if you want fade in and fade out like this.

You can reset to defaults if you want and even make the current settings to be the default.

Now let’s move to the next tab - the Annotation Properties

with the annotations clip we can create shapes. let’s create an arrow for example, we need to draw it on the screen and we can edit it later with those 2 dots and also just move it around on the canvas. we can change the color, change the opacity and the thickness of the shape.

We can add shadow and make it bigger or smaller and also add outline and choose the color of the outline.

We can even edit the shape of the arrow by changing the endpoints.

That’s it for this lesson and in the next lesson we will finish learning about the Properties panel by learning about the last 2 tabs - the Text tab and the Media Library tab.

Try it yourself:

• Add a text box
• Change the font to Arial
• Change the size to 144
• Make the text bold
• change the background of the text box to a photo you have on your computer

• Add some music and use the ducking option on the clip that you are speaking
• Add a new microphone and camera (if you have) recording and choose "Close ScreenFlow before recording"

Note:

To change the name of the file in our project just click twice on the name.

In the Text properties panel we can add text, first, let’s add text box and now we can edit the text to whatever we want. We can change the font of the text, change the size —— and the alignment just like with any text software like word or pages. We can also make the text bold or italic.

We can choose the color of the text and even fill it with a picture. You can also choose a gradient color and than play with the upper and the lower colors.

We can add outline to the text, change the color of the outline and the thickness. You can see that the text is inside a black box, we can change the color of this box, make it more rounded, change it to an image background and then choose if you want to stretch it, scale to fill or one of the options, you can also make the margin bigger or smaller and even delete the background.

Now for the last tab - The media library.

From here you can add music, other kinds of media and even record new media. These are the files you currently have in your project. If you have many files you can search here but pay attention this is case sensitive. you can make the thumbnails bigger or arrange them in a list view or as tiles.

You can show or hide the duration of the clips and arrange them by name, date, duration and type. You can also group them by type so it makes it way easier to see everything.

If you want to delete a file just click backspace on the keyboard or right click and than “delete media”. You can select the clips in the timeline that are using this file, you can add the media to the point the scrubber is right now and preview it.

If you want to add a file just click “Add Media” and if you want to add a new screen recording to the project or any kind of recording just enter here to “Add Recording” and you can choose what do you want to record and even close ScreenFlow before the recording.

That’s it. in the next lesson we will learn about how to really edit stuff in our timeline.

Try it yourself:

• Take the project I added down below and delete all the "hmm"s.
• Chnage the clip named "Change this" to anything you want.
• when I say "This is how your test video should look like" - make it to be at a speed of 300%.
• Paste properties from your screen recording clip to another clip.
• Detach audio from any clip you want.
• Freeze the frame of a screen recording clip.
• Add a callout to the freezed frame.

Note:

If you have multiple languages on your keyboard make sure english is on so you can split the clip with the letter T.

You can also use the "L" key in your keyboard to play the video, "K" to pause and "J" to rewind the video. If you'll press the L or the K keys twice it will play the video faster.

When you “Freeze Frame” a screen recording clip, you can still change screen recording properties and add callouts.

Today we will start to edit our video, by that I mean we will learn how to split clips, make them shorter, slow motion and so on.

After you finish the recording you will see the workspace with the recording files in the timeline. We can also add files from the Media Library tab if we want, as we learned in the previous lesson.

So we recorded our video and now we want to cut the parts that I got confused. so we will move to that part, and then we will click that red thing on the scrubber or the letter T on the keyboard and it will split all the tracks. If we want to split only one track - we need to choose it and then hit the letter T or right click and “Split Clip”.

so this is the part that I want to delete. Now let’ s select both of the tracks by clicking one and then click the other while we press command or drag the cursor and then hit the backspace key. We can also right click and then “Cut” but this is a bit different because it’s deleting it but also copying it.

Now let’s move the tracks to where they supposed to be.

We can also cut the video from the end or the beginning this way.

If we will right click on the clip it will show us some options, let’s take the “Clip Inspector”. In the Clip Inspector we can change the duration of the video by making it faster or slower, same with the speed slider and lock the clip so it cannot be moved or changed until we unlock it.

Let’s close it and continue. About nesting clips we won’t talk right now. You can change the name of the clip on the timeline by clicking here or double click on the name, and of course you can copy and cut the video.

Paste Properties is a really cool option. let’s take this audio clip and change the volume, Now if we will copy it and choose another audio clip, we can choose “Paste Properties” and than “Audio” and it will copy the audio properties. The same goes for video properties and all the others.

If you have a clip that has audio and video you can detach the audio so it will become to 2 different clips.

Now let’s say you want to freeze what you see in the canvas right now for 5 seconds, you can do it by choosing “Add Freeze Frame” and than it becomes to a regular photo and you can extend it to the length that you want, you can lock the clip or unlock it, the same as we did in the Clip Inspector and we can group a few clips together, that way if I will make a clip shorter, all the clips in the group will be shorter too.

We can add starting transition and ending transition, or remove it, we will learn about transitions in more depth in the next lesson.

The last option here is “Track Selection”. this option let’s you select all the clips in the track or all the clips after the clip that is chosen, including him.

• Add a "copy machine" transition between 2 clips.

As we saw in the previous lesson we can add transitions.

You can add a transition in the end of the clip like this.

We can extend the transition to be longer. You can see the transition on the canvas and you can also hear that the audio is fading out. We can also add starting transition or add transition between 2 clips.

If we want to change the transition we can double click on the transition icon and the transition inspector will show up. In the sidebar we can choose if we want to show all of the transitions, only the favorite transitions or the transitions that are built-in on the OS X. There is also an option to hide this sidebar

In the center of the transition inspector we can see the transitions. We can choose which transition we want to use and make it favorite. Under it we can change the duration of the transition.

You can see that as we changed the transition the options here on the right changed too. Every transition has it’s own properties and we can change them. Some of the transitions doesn’t have properties to change like the “cross dissolve” transition.

We can also preview the transition, change the properties and preview it again. To stop the preview we need to close the transition inspector and press the space key.

We can also get to the transition inspector by clicking that gear icon, or right click with the mouse and then choose “Show transition inspector”, there is also an option to change the transition quickly and even remove the transition.

That’s it for this lesson and don’t forget to do the tasks in the description, they will help you get used to the software very fast.

This is the menu bar, on the left side we can see all the options of the ScreenFlow software.

If we will click on the name “ScreenFlow” we can go and change the preferences.

If we will uncheck the first box, the ScreenFlow icon which called the ScreenFlow helper will disappear. The second box lets us change how much time will the countdown clock will last and even turn it off.

We can choose if we want to launch the ScreenFlow helper when you login to your computer or not and if you want ScreenFlow to check for updates at launch.

When you record with ScreenFlow we can stop the record by using the Shift+Cmd+2 hotkey and pause the record by using the Shift+Cmd+1 hotkey.

you can change it or delete it, I can't find a reason to delete the hotkeys but you can.

In the next tab we can change all the options of the timeline. As default we see the time ruler this way. when “Use SMTPE timecode” is on the time ruler will look this way.

When you hover the mouse on a clip in the timeline the “action menu” gear icon will show up. We can turn it off by checking this box.

If you want to see the audio waveforms as stereo waveforms you can do it by checking this box.

When you add a transition the default transition is “Bars Swipe”, you can change the default transition to whatever you want.

As we saw in the workspace lesson, we can change the height of the tracks with these arrows, we can also make the tracks to be small or large as default when you open ScreenFlow.

Now see, when you add a text clip the duration of the clip will be 5 seconds until we change it, we can change the default duration of it or of any kind of clip, callout, transitions and so on..

In the advanced tab we can change the way the zoom will be - sharp or smooth, we can change the compression of the exported file to adaptive or lossless but if you don’t use the lossless export you probably don’t need to change it, you can uninstall the computer audio driver and for last we can change the capture scratch disk - if in a middle of a recording something happens and the recording stops than the file will be automatically saved in the chosen scratch disk.

There is also another tab - the licences tab, here you can upgrade your license for newer versions, change the serial number or deactivate the serial number so you can use it on other computers

Next in the menu bar is the file menu, here you can start a new recording, just like from the ScreenFlow helper and you can add an empty document, this is great if you want to edit with the software things that you didn’t record, or if you want to record only audio without the screen.

You can open a project you have on your computer, open one of your recent projects and add additional recording, just like you can do from the media library tab in the properties panel.

You can close the window, it’s the same as closing this way.

If you have nested clips - which we will talk about in the next lessons, you can close the nested clip tab.

You can save the project, duplicate the project and save it again somewhere else, rename the project or move the project to somewhere else. We can actually rename the project by clicking that little arrow.

You should be able to revert your changes to the last time you saved your project but it doesn’t work - probably because of a bug, I would be glad to hear if someone can do it and doesn’t has this bug.

The next option is “Save Frame”, if we will save the frame it will save what you see on the canvas right now as a png image.

The last 2 options are “Publish to” and Export, we will talk about both of them in the next lesson.

Try it yourself:

• Change the dimensions to 100%.
• Export your project with the "Web-high" preset.
• Export the project another time with a different name using the "Motion blur" option and see the differences.
• Export with the "lossless - audio only" preset

Before you can publish your video you need to export it, the export process will take your project file and compress it to a file in a format that doesn’t need the software to work.

After you’ll export your project you can upload it to Youtube, Vimeo etc. and watch it on your computer with your media player.

So, you have 2 options - you can publish to the video sites right ahead and change a bit the settings but I don’t like to do it because I like to see the final video before I upload it and also have it on my computer, so let’s go to Export or press command+E and now you can see all those settings.

The first thing you see is the name of the exported file, after that you can choose where do you want to save that file.

Here on preset you can use a built in preset with the best settings for its needs. For youtube and all other videos that goes to the internet use the “Web - High” preset, “Web - Low” is the same but with low quality. With lossless you will get the best results, it will not compress the video at all so you won’t lose any quality, you should change in the preferences to lossless instead of adaptive if you use lossless export but that’s not totally necessary. Even though this is the best quality I don’t use this option often because:

The quality of the “Web - High” and the “Lossless” aren’t that different, the lossless is just a bit better.

2. The lossless format can’t play on my mac, I have to convert it

3. and the main reason: The size of the exported file will be way bigger, so much bigger that the difference of the quality doesn’t worth it - I’ve exported a project with “Web - High” preset and the size was 16.7 MB and the size of the “Lossless” was 246 MB and that’s with a video of 1 and a half minutes and after I converted the file with quicktime player the size of it changed to almost 2 GB!

If you want to export a video and make the background to be transparent

you can do it by exporting with the “lossless ProRes with Alpha” preset. You won’t see the difference with the QuickTime Player but if I will take it to After Effects, the regular export will hide the photo but the alpha exported file will not, and also you can see the transparency checkerboard background which we can’t see with the regular file.

To export the project to an “AIFF” audio file with no video choose the Audio Only preset.

And now you can export to the best settings for iPad, iPhone, Apple TV and iPod.

Let’s go back to the “Web - High” preset. We can customize it and change the frame rate, export only audio, only video and change all the other settings, I never change it because I don’t need to, it’s the best for me this way, after you changed the preset you can make these settings as default. and every time you will choose export it will show the default preset.

In “manage” you can add custom presets, just copy a preset and edit it, you can delete it later. You can change the name or disable it so it won’t show up in the preset options until you enable it.

As default, it will scale it down to 50%. I never use it, always 100%

You can also scale to custom size but don’t make the size bigger than what you have - it won’t make the quality to be better at all.

and you can use Motion blur, this will make all the objects to blur when you move them so it will blend well, just like when you capture a running horse.

About those 2 options we will learn in the advanced section of this course, and the next lesson will be in this section.

Try it yourself:

• Add an empty marker.
• Edit the marker and add a note.
• Add another marker and move it.
• Export the project using the "Add chapter track from markers" option.
• Mark in and out points and export the project again.
• Take 2 or more clips (add annotation clip if you don't have enough clips) and nest them.
• Add an ending transition to the nested clip.
• Go into the nested clip and make one of your clips bigger by 150%

If you want to add a marker or a reminder in a certain moment of the project right-click on the time ruler and choose “Add marker”. you can click Ok or add a note. You can see that the markers with the note are in orange color. You can change or add the note by double-click on the marker.

With right-click you can also go to a specific marker or delete it.

You can even export the project and choose “Add chapter track from markers” and now you can skip to the point the marker is with your media player.

In the window menu you can see all of the markers, add or delete, change their name, the time and go to the marker in the timeline.

Here, in the mark menu we can mark in and out points and change them, that way we can export only the marked area. We can delete all the markers, go to the next or previous marker, go to the end or start of the project and move to the next frame, we can also do it with the keyboard arrows.

Next thing for this lesson is Nested Clips.

Let’s say you have tons of clips in your timeline and it turns to be very annoying to find and edit the parts that you want, that’s when you’ll want to use nested clips.

After you nest your clips you can move them around as one clip and make transitions to all the clips in the nested clip. You can see that icon that represent that this is a nested clip. You can edit your nested clip by double-click on it and now it opens a new tab and in this tab you can make changes like it’s a different project and then get back to your big project, here on the view menu we can show or hide the nested clips tab bar.

You can also unnest the clips if you want.

Before I’m starting the lesson I want to say that there are a few bugs with the captions feature and you might see them through the lesson.

To start working with captions we need to go to “View” and choose “Show caption track”. Now we can click a point in the caption track and add the text.

When I finish talking I want the caption to end so I will make the caption longer or shorter by typing the exact timing or press command and the down and up arrows, this will work only when you are using the text box and not the timing box.

You can click the play icon to play from the beginning of the caption and click these arrows to go to the next or previous caption. You can also use the tab key or shift+tab to go to the previous caption. Let’s close this window and now you see that the captions that have text are green. We can’t preview it until we will go to “View” and then “Show Captions”. Now we want to add another caption here, so let’s make this empty caption a bit shorter and then add text to the next caption and the same goes here - you can change the timing or the text whenever you want.

So, let’s say we finished with the captions and you want to add another captions track for another language, click on the gear icon and change it to the language that you want, now you can do the same thing, If you want to get back to the english captions just change the current language to english.

When you finish with all of your captions you can export it to SRT file, which is a captions file and then you can upload the video to youtube and add captions so they can choose if they want to see the captions or view it in their language - english or hebrew in our case, then you’ll choose the language you want to export and click Save.

You can also export the project with the captions by choosing “Add captions track”.

In the media player you can choose the language that you want to see but pay attention that this doesn’t “burn” the captions to the video. You’ll need another software to do it.

Try it yourself:

• Take the green screen footage and the image I uploaded (or any footage or image you want) and key out the green (or blue) the best as you can
• Do the same but this time key out the brown color

If you have a green or blue screen you can change the background by deleting the original background and then add the photo that you want.

I added the green screen footage and the background image in the description so you can try it yourself.

So let’s begin, first we need to take our clips to the media library and then put it in the project. Now let’s go to the video properties and choose the “chroma key” filter from the video filters.

Great! Now you can see that all the green background disappeared, but there’s still a bit left near the object and we’re going to fix it.

First of all let’s understand what happened here. We activated the chroma key filter and now all the green color disappeared, if we have blue screen we will need to change the color, we can even key out the brown color for example.

The first slider lets us adjust the whiteness tolerance, so move it to the point that you can’t see anymore green background.

The tolerance slider lets us change how strong we want the filter to be. You should move the slider to the right as much as you can without damaging the object itself.

And with the last slider we can specify the angle around the chosen color. Again, just move it as far as you can to the right without damaging the object.

So we have no background left, now we can export it with the “Lossless - ProRes with Alpha” preset to export it and keep the background transparent but we can also change the background to another photo or even a video, just take the clip and place it in a track under the green screen footage track.

Ok, so this lesson will be a bit complicated.

First of all you need to start the recording and record your camera, the screen, the audio, and the computer audio.

Then call your friend on Skype, he won’t be able to see you because your camera is recording with ScreenFlow and the camera will freeze if you do, so make a regular call with no video and make sure that your friend does using the camera. The same goes for the microphone.

You can go to the Skype preferences and in the “Audio/Video” section you can change the microphone and the camera you use for Skype.

So let’s call my friend, “Ok so bye bye”

So after I bummed up my friend we can go and edit the really small interview.

First of all let’s take my video clip and move it so it won’t disturb right now, after that we need to crop the screen recording clip so we can see your friend’s video only.

Just click control and move these dots to crop the video.

Then take your video and your friend’s video and move them to fit in your canvas.

Now you can add text or a banner you previously made under the video clips.

At the end you can change the background color or add a background photo in the lowest track.

Now let’s move to Keynote. Recording with Keynote is super simple, first of all start the recording, then open your keynote file, make it full screen and whenever you want to skip to the next slide just press the space key.

That’s it for this lesson, and in the next lesson we will learn about all the options in the menu bar.

We already talked about the File and the Mark menus in the menu bar but we still have lots of menus we didn’t talk about. So let’s start from the beginning.

From the Main menu we can see information about ScreenFlow, Check for updates, buy add-ons from the store, hide ScreenFlow, hide all other applications and quit ScreenFlow, Services is a really complex option and actually isn’t related to ScreenFlow, so let’s skip to the “Edit” menu.

From the edit menu you can pretty much do everything you can do from the timeline but a bit more.. You can undo the changes and you can also see what was the last thing you did. You can also see all the keyboard shortcuts of any action in the right. In the next lesson you’ll be able to see all of the keyboard shortcuts.

We talked about all these so let’s skip to “Paste and Match Style”. If you have a text box, let’s take this one and it has styling like red color and other font and you want to copy the text to that box but keep the existing style from the second box, use the “Paste and Match Style” option. If you want to paste it and use the red color style just paste it.

With Ripple Delete you can mark in and out points and then delete them and the clips after the marked area will get closer automatically.

Trim front to scrubber will make the clip to start where the scrubber is right now and Trim end to scrubber will do the opposite.

You can use dictation when you are typing text, pay attention that this isn’t always work well and some words might be different then what you said. Let’s try it with the captions —— you can also use it for text boxes.

And special characters so you can add them to your text.

Now let’s move to insert - We can add text or annotations box, you can open a file from your computer but the really cool part is “Speech Clip” - you can type whatever you want and it will say it! —— You can also change the person who will say it.

Of course you should never use it for tutorials, it’s a really annoying voice and it pronounce some words really bad.

In the font menu we can change all the options of the text, you can pretty much do everything from the text properties panel.

Nothing new from the “Actions” menu but we didn’t talk yet about curve type - this lets you choose how do you want the action to be, slowly in the beginning but sharp at the end, slowly at the end and the beginning and so on..All the soft movements are called ease.

We talked about the view menu in the workspace lesson and from the window menu the only thing that we didn’t talk about is “Select next tab” but seriously, why would you do that? Why don’t you just click on the next tab?

And for last, from the Help menu you can search for articles about ScreenFlow and some more resources.

Not a long time ago telestream released the new version of ScreenFlow - ScreenFlow 5.0.

First of all, this is a paid upgrade

so if you already have ScreenFlow it will cost you 34$ to upgrade.

If you didn’t purchase ScreenFlow yet it will cost 99$ for you.

I recommend you to upgrade to Mac OS X Yosemite to get all the functions.

So what’s new in this version?

1. New design that fits to the new operating system.

2. iOS recording - that is just wonderful, I already used it and it works really great, no lags and very high quality. There are still a few things you might want to consider:

a. You HAVE to use Yosemite and iOS 8.

b. You have to use lightning connection so I think iPhone 4S and below are not supported.

c. You can’t record where the fingers tapped on, There is a temporary solution for this and I will teach it but it’s a lot of work, I hope they will add this function soon.

3. For the iO S recording you can also now export with the App preview preset so you can publish a preview of your app to the AppStore.

4. Recording monitor - You can now see the time, the volume of the microphone and also add a marker WHILE you record.

5. Option to customize frame rate - We will talk about it in the next lessons.

6. Wipe pack is now included (worth 20$).

7. Import SRT captions - You can now import caption you made before, something that I really waited for.

8. Faster export

9. Batch export - You can export lots of projects at once with the same settings - A really good time saver!

So when you first open ScreenFlow you get this window, you can go to the New Recording panel and just as before - record your desktop, video, audio, computer audio but from this version you can now record your screen from your iDevice. Make sure you have iOS 8, Yosemite on your mac and your iDevice is connected using the lightning cable to record.

Also in the next page you can now set the framerate, so what is framerate?

As you might know, video is created using a lot of pictures. Usually video is taken with 30fps - Frames Per Second. Each frame is a picture, when there are more frames per second you can see the video smoother and better in slow motion.

You can set it to automatic or one of these choices, I recommend to set it on Automatic or 30fps for best results.

You can also create a new empty document from here and choose iOS presets.

In the next tab you can see your recent documents and open them quickly.

So let’s start and record our desktop, iDevice screen which is iPod 5 in my case and also audio.

Ok, now that we have a test video we can edit it, in the next lesson we will learn about the new edit features in ScreenFlow 5.

Try it yourself:

• Create a new empty document (iPhone 5 portrait preset) and drag the iOS recording to this project.
• Cut the video and add a color label to one of the parts
• Zoom in to the top left corner and then add a snapback action.

Welcome again, in this lesson I will teach about the new editing features in ScreenFlow 5 and some bonus tips..

So here’s a quick tip:

If you want to copy a recording file to another project, all you need to do is to open both projects and drag the files to the other project.

Now let’s drag the files to our timeline and you can see the markers, we can name them…. and move them.

If I’ll create a new marker you can see that these are 2 different types of markers.

That is really good because you might not put your recording at the same place, it’s great that it’s changing according to where the file is.

There is a bug in this function right now, if you’ll make the video shorter from the left side, the markers will move, which ruins the timing of the markers..

By right clicking on your clip you can add a color label to the clip, just to keep things more organised.

Also in the media panel you can see that there is a new gear icon instead of the old one, you can do the same things as before plus 2 more options.

You can select a media file in the media library and click “Select clips in timeline” and it will highlight the selected clips.

You can also delete unused media, so if I’ll remove media from the timeline and choose the “Remove all unused media” option, the unused media will be deleted from the Media Library, be carful because this can’t be undone.

Also in the file menu you can now change the document settings, this allow you to change the canvas size using popular sizes.

You can also go to the edit menu and import captions.

If you’ll change a property of a clip, for example let’s zoom in our screen recording, you can quickly add another video action that reverts to the old position by going to the “Actions” menu and add a snapback action of what you changed, it can be audio, video or screen recording action.

And the last thing for this lesson is rolling edits, so now if you drag the rolling edits icon it will make 1 video shorter and the other longer.

This makes it way faster to work.

In the next lesson we will learn about touch callouts and some tips for iOS recording.

Try it yourself:

• At the moment the footage is zooming in, add a "zoom in" touch callout from the templates, you can change the length of the zoom or the touch callout to look better.
• Do the same with the "Zoom out" template.
• Change the fill color of the "Zoom in" to blue.
• Add a red outline to the "Zoom out" touch callout.
• Change the spacing to 10px.

So in this lesson we will talk about the “Touch Callouts” panel.

This panel is focusing on touch gestures for the iDevice recording, at the beginning of this section I said that ScreenFlow don’t record your gestures but you can add them.

So you can add a gesture from a template and edit it or create a whole new gesture.

Let’s start from the templates.

We need to go to the “Actions” menu, “Templates” and then choose the template that you want, let’s take “Swipe left”.

Now we can make it shorter or longer by decreasing or increasing the length of the callout in our timeline.

When we click on the callout to make changes you can see 2 circles, one for the starting state and one for the ending state. You can recognise which one is what by the plus sign vs. the dot in the middle of the circle.

You can hide the start and end states or show the live-time state.

You can also make changes like: increasing the count of those touch callouts, you can change the fill color, you can change the outline, to add an outline..

Let’s delete it for now.. You can create a new action from nothing so now you can see this and we can now change the fill color as I said, add an outline, make the size smaller or bigger, if I’ll add 1 to the count so now we can add some spacing, we can also make it rotate and change the opacity.

Ok, so now what you see: the whole callout is just standing there, so what you need is to click on it again and “Callout has end state” so now if I’ll show the live state you can see that it’s moving really really slow so I’ll make it shorter and now you can see that it’s moving.

You can make the gesture wait before it moves and change the time, you can change the curve and also you can change the size, spacing and also rotation and opacity so now you can see it was bigger and the spacing got smaller and also the size.

Ok, so I got a problem the I couldn’t see anything, that was because I chose the Wait option so I’ll disable it and now you can see that it moves from here to here - from the start state to the end state, you can play with it and change it but as I said it’s a lot of work to do that for everything you do on your iDevice so I hope ScreenFlow will add this function that it will automatically record your gestures because now it’s actually very frustrating but you can do it and you can add them, change them, whatever you want.

Another tip I want to show you - if you want to export it to the Appstore so it’s great, but if you want to upload it to youtube then you have those black bars, so what I like to do is to copy this clip so let’s just make it the same, and now you want to make it bigger that way and that way, so now it’s really really big and in the Video panel -> Video filters, let’s add one and let’s add blur so let’s say gaussian blur.. Increase the radius and now you can see that the background is also changing according to what you do on the iPhone so it’s really nice and looks better.

You can change it, you can make it even bigger, you can make it more blurred so it’s really nice background.

Another thing that I forgot to say is that if you right-click on your touch callout you can create template action and then name it, so let’s say “Weird” I don’t know, it’s just a name.. You can store the duration so it will always stay in this duration and then you can change it, or you can unmark it and then the timing won’t matter here.

“Weird”.. “Create”.. And now if we’ll go to “Actions” ,“Templates” you can see “Add Weird” or “Manage templates” and we can delete it..

So now I can choose the video and then “Actions”, “Templates”, “Add Weird” and now you can see it’s the same length.

I’ll move a bit and create a new touch callout so “Action” and it doesn’t really matter, just you can see this length, and now I’ll choose it, right-click, “Create template action”, “New”, and I won’t store the duration so I’ll click here, add an action, “Templates”, “Add New”, you can see that the length isn’t the same.

So that’s it and I’ll see you in the next lesson.

So now if you go to “File”, “Publish to” and choose any of the choices here you can see that you can save a copy on your computer.

Also you can see you have another platform, you can publish the video directly to Wistia.

If you go to “Export” or press Cmd+E, you’ll see pretty much the same window as before, but here in “Preset” you can choose “iOS App Preview”.

Also you can choose a preset and export it in 60 Frames Per Second so it looks smoother.

I usually use “Web-High” but on 60fps so “Customize” and change the framerate to 60fps. Then I make these settings as default so I don’t need to change framerate every time.

Ok, now to the really new function is ScreenFlow 5, the Batch Export.

You can choose which documents you want to export, choose the output folder, all the settings and click begin.

Boom, you got all your documents exported way faster than if you have done this to each document separately.
