The 6 Human Needs


Certainty: feeling secure that we can experience more pleasure than pain, safety, predictability

Uncertainty/Variety: change, excitement, the unknown

Significance: feeling special, unique, that our lives have meaning

Love/Connection:  feeling loved, feeling connected with ourselves and others

Growth: progress, expanding our capacity, capability, and understanding

Contribution: giving what we have to others, to contribute beyond ourselves

The 6 Humans Needs by Tony Robbins are emotional states that every human being meets.  Every person meets the first four.  We meet them even if we have to lie to ourselves, even if we have to have split personalities, we will find a way to meet them.

In addition, people ignore their values, ethics, and sometimes common sense to meet at least the first 4 Human Needs.

Meeting the final two needs of Growth and Contribution make us feel fulfilled.

Some financial rich people feel depressed.  They might have the first 4 needs met, but they’re not growing or contributing beyond themselves anymore.

Too many doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health practitioners focus on treating the symptoms rather than the cause.  That's one reason some people give up and believe they're stuck forever.

You must change the cause which is producing the symptoms.

Finding The Underlying Causes & Root, Not The Symptoms

Nobody has depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, etc.  Nobody is depressed, anxious, broken, etc.

But people could FEEL depressed, anxious, broken, and so forth, but it's only a symptom of a certain mentality, not a thing in itself.

We always here people say "my depression" keeps me from truly enjoying life.  These people have been hypnotized to believe that it is a thing in itself, and especially that it is outside of themselves.  

The truth is that we have a lot of control over our lives.  Keep your clients from going down the road of using disempowering labels which they have little to no control over.

Changing our beliefs is all about changing the meanings we give to the events in our lives.

For instance, some people say that when someone smiles at us, that MEANS they are nice.  Other people say that when someone smiles at us, that MEANS they are trying to trick us.

When we think that the meaning is very true, it becomes a belief and we live according to that.

What Are Beliefs? – Definition

Think of it like this.  Beliefs are basically our map of the world.  Changing our beliefs changes our map, so we navigate the world differently.

We can change negative beliefs and limiting beliefs by changing and/or expanding our map.

How are Beliefs Created?

Beliefs are created two main ways:

1.  Repetition

Example: “Every time I did well in sports, my parents would tell me how great I was”, therefore I believe that doing well in sports makes me a great person.

2.  Emotionally Charged Experience

Example: “One time when I got my first A is school, with a grin from ear to ear, and tears in their eyes, my parents told me how great I was”, therefore I believe that getting an A in school makes me a great person.

What Is A Belief? Find The Belief

Amy Cuddy from Harvard University published a story of power poses.  When we stand in certain ways, we send different neurotransmitters and hormones to our body.  

People who stand like Superman or Superwoman or only 2 minutes release testosterone.  Being in this stance also increases the odds of you taking action when needed.
