Baseball, Basketball, Hockey and Soccer may be America's pastimes, but FOOTBALL has become America's sport. If you've ever wondered about the basics of how to play (or at least follow) American Football, you're not alone.
"The battlefield is a scene of constant chaos. The winner will be the one who controls that chaos, both his own and his opponents"
Knowing about the football field is critical to knowing the game. When you know what things like yard lines, hash lines and end lines represent, you’ll have an easier time following the game.
"Time is the longest distance between two places"
American football is played by high school, college, and professional teams, and each team wins or loses by THE CLOCK. Each has its own set of rules and although there are some slight variations, the GAME FORMAT stays basically the same.
"If winning isn't everything, then why do they keep score?"
Football strategy involves time, downs and territory, but the goal of the game is to score more points than the other team. When a team has possession of the football, it has several ways that it can score points.
"It seems to be a law of nature, inflexible and inexorable, that those who will not risk, cannot win"
-John Paul Jones
What’s a first down? How is it different from a 2nd down? How many downs can you have? How does a team get more downs? Understanding the downs and distance is key to understanding football.
“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity”
American Football can seem like a group of guys constantly crashing into each other until you understand some of the basics and start to see the strategy involved.
"Let the punishment fit the crime"
In American Football, a player who is determined by game officials to have committed an illegal action incurs a penalty on behalf of his team, and the down is replayed. These penalties are assessed in yardage. The rules try to ensure that the penalty is appropriate to the offense committed; a minor offense is usually punished by a five yard penalty, whereas some more aggressive actions can result in much more.
"What we do in life, echoes in eternity"
Who's a more prolific passer, Eli Manning or Peyton Manning? Who rushed the middle better, LaDainian Thompson or Emmitt Smith? These modern-day gladiators are the nuts and bolts of the team's-machine!
"The game of life is a lot like football. You have to tackle your problems, block your fears, and score your points when you get the opportunity"
The game will end, but the battle for ultimate victory never stops. It's time for you to enjoy the season, get excited for the play-offs and cheer during the Championship Game!
Remember to check-in with the daily updates in this course to stay on top of THE GAME!
