The journey of thousand miles begins with a single step. You might have heard or told this phrase multiple time. To complete this journey on time and in right direction, you need self-motivation. But more that, you need a navigation mechanism to ensure that you are in right direction and on time. If you are embarking on a startup journey, then these navigation tools become more important. Do you know that in US alone, Eight out of Ten new products launched fail? What can you do if you are an entrepreneur to ensure your product is the 20% bracket of successful products? If you are starting young, chances are that you have right technical skills but not the right experience. How can you make sure that the approach you are following is correct?
In fall 2009 when I started attending local startup events in New Delhi and around. The only purpose of attending these events was to get motivation from other entrepreneurs and startup founders before I start my product startup. I never thought that these weekend events were connecting the dots to give me a purpose for my life.
During that time, in parallel, I was working full time in New Products and Innovation function with a telecom operator leading a complete product portfolio. My job involved generating new ideas and converting these ideas into useful products. After developing these products, a critical part of the job was to socialize the product with regional teams and ensure product is launched successfully at various locations. I was travelling for almost 70% of the time to field test the product at various locations before launch. In Dec 2010, while waiting to board the aircraft at New Delhi International Airport, I came across an interesting book ‘BUY-OLOGY’ by Martin Lindstrom. The book was so intriguing and I almost completed it during 2 hour flight. Martin is an expert in neuromarketing and helps brands in positioning to ensure appropriate recall and increase sales. As per him, on average, approx. 156,000 new products and 21,000 new brands debut in stores globally, the equivalent of one new product release every three minutes. In consumer products alone, 52% of all new brands and 72% of all new products fail. In United States alone, Eight out of Ten new products fail. I was so surprised at this figure and started searching for reasons why those two products taste success, what is different in those products, what factors favors success of a product.
Fortunately, interactions with startup founders and entrepreneurs gave me opportunities to understand how both successful & struggling entrepreneurs get ideas and how they sharpen these ideas into sellable and successful products.
In last 5 years, I had more than 500 such interactions and found a pattern/trend in how successful people get ideas, evaluate these ideas before investing their resources on a particular idea.
